There is a horde of creatures called The Throng that roam from planet to planet through a gateway, subjugating the inhabitants for food and sport. They take all they can from the planet and then move on to the next. Right now they are on Earth. Humanity had been overconfident, thinking they were a superior race, but the monsters took over. Showdown at Midnight is a collection of stories set in an Old West that is chock-full of the strange, supernatural, and at times horrific. Werewolves, ghost train robbers, wendigos, bloodthirsty vampire bats, you name it. The mix is creative and fulfilling. I liked some stories more than others, but there was not a bad one in the bunch.

Grouchy and his fellow survivors thought that burning the cursed apple tree would free Snow of her curse and release the zombie “horrors” ravaging the countryside. Of course it did not work, and now the sky itself is poisoned and pouring the curse down on everything. The water is contaminated and the skeletons are rising from their graves.

That Wicked Apple begins right where book one leaves off and throws the reader right into the thick of the story. Snow is ravaging the countryside with her horde of zombie “horrors.” The dwarf, Grouchy, and his human companions are struggling to understand what is going on and finding a way to stop it. After picking up some new survivors, Grouchy finds out one of his group is actually Queen Adara, who disguised herself as an old crone and gave his beloved Snow that cursed apple.

Everyone has heard the tale of Snow White being kissed awake by the Prince and getting her happily-ever-after, but that was the version told to children so they would not have nightmares. The real story is she is kissed by the Prince and she wakes, but she does not wake up Snow any longer. She is now a Zombie Princess with a terrible hunger burning her insides and she needs to eat. She no longer sees her friends who have missed her or her true love.

Secluded and surrounded by an icy wilderness with the wind screaming outside his door, he begins to hear and see things that may or may not be there.
