One year after a nuclear blast destroyed New York, Nostradamus Greene and his daughter Naomi are still surviving, thanks to his former Spec Ops training and the fact he was always prepared for something to happen. Unfortunately, the blast wasn’t the only terrible thing to happen. There’s a disease making the rounds; it begins with a rash that spreads quickly, kills in a matter of days, and is highly contagious.
One bad decision leads to his home being broken into and Naomi might now have the disease. He decides to head to Indiana in search of his brother. Before they even leave New York they hear the rumor of a cure. Nos decides to follow this trail to save Naomi’s life. This decision shows us what Nostradamus is willing to go through and do in order to save his child.
Nos meets quite a cast of characters on his journey ever westward. He partners up with Leila and her three dogs. They also run into a fanatical religious group calling themselves the Revelation. The main rule on the road is to trust no one. When the end of the world is close, most people will do anything to survive. It’s a lesson Nos, Leila, and Naomi are forced to learn over and over the closer they get to a cure.
Theo Gangi has written a good apocalypse tale. Nostradamus is a strong character willing to do anything to save his daughter. Being Special Forces makes his encounters very interesting, and I was rooting for him every step of the way. The decline of civilization is believable and can be horrific at times. A New Day in America gives us a glimpse at what we could face if something like this ever happened.
