Screen Bites: Things (and People) Fall Apart: Being Human, Lost Girl, Merlin, The Vampire Diaries, and Grimm

Greetings, Watchers. Lots has happened on our shows during the column’s hiatus, and this time we will be sorting through the events of just a few of our favorites. Reminder: in your comments/responses, please do not say anything about shows not under discussion in this particular column, or about episodes more recent than the ones discussed.

Being Human, Monday 9:00 EST, SyFy

Over the last several episodes, we saw Josh navigating life as a human with a werewolf girlfriend, Sally coming to terms with having to stay away from everyone she knew before, and Aidan attempting to find blood uncontaminated with the virus that has been killing off the local vampire population.

In the most recent episode the tide begins to turn for each of the three main characters. Josh was scratched by Liam while rescuing Aidan, so will become a werewolf again. Aidan managed to beat the virus that Liam injected him with, and the trio figured out that the small bit of werewolf blood he had ingested provided the cure. Sally realizes that the eating of fresh flesh is the only way to stave off her continued deterioration, but she resolves to not give in to the urge.

The scene that gets the yuckiest award from me: where Sally sticks the toothbrush through her cheek. Do you agree? I actually like this different take on zombies, which it seems Sally and her two friends really are.

What do you think about Aidan having given Blake the information about the cure?

How are you enjoying the show this season? What are some of your favorite scenes?

Lost Girl, Monday 10:00 EST, SyFy

Good news first — Lost Girl will return for Season Four.

As Bo approaches her Dawning, when she will either evolve or devolve, lots of events have been affecting her various relationships. Kenzie gets rescued from the fae that was impersonating her, Lauren and Bo officially become a couple (though it seems trouble is brewing), and Bo discovers that Dyson got his love back.

Though I really enjoyed this week’s episode, with its in-depth look at some of the fringe fae culture/society, the show was not quite the same without Kenzie and Dyson. Did you miss them as much as I did?

Speaking of characters, though I initially disliked her, I am really warming up to Tamsin. Do you feel the same? I gained respect for her when she stood up to the Morrigan, having taken to heart Bo’s relentless quest to save Kenzie.

What do you think we will see in the last five episodes of the season?

Merlin, Friday 10:00 EST, SyFy

Much as I love this show, I think they are drawing out the Evil-Guinevere-Under-Morganna’s- Spell a bit too long. Does anyone else agree? The show only has five more episodes, and I would have liked to see them spend more of those with Guinevere united with Arthur, Merlin, and the others in the fight against Morganna.

It seems they really are taking us all the way to the end before Arthur finds out about Merlin. At this point, I would not be surprised if the big reveal happens in the last scene of the last episode. Your thoughts?

Vampire Diaries, Thursday 8:00 EST, The CW

So much has happened on the show over the last episodes, but I want to focus on the most significant: Jeremy’s death. That came as a surprise to me, primarily because he was Elena’s last family member, and the her true tie to her human side. I will be interested to see how Elena navigates life with her humanity switch turned off.

What was your reaction to Jeremy’s demise?

Grimm, Friday 9:00 EST, NBC

I’m sure the rest of you are as happy about the show’s return as I am. Now Nick knows a bit about Renard’s status as a royal, but not his true purpose. In the last scene, we see Nick suffering the effects of the purification potion.

What do you think we will see in the last two episodes of the season?

*The Vampire Diaries returns 3/14, Supernatural 3/20, Warehouse 13 on 4/29, and Merlin on 5/3.

Happy viewing!

Finally got to watch Grimm (been streaming on netflix). So glad Rosalie is back and is helping again.

I have Merlin DVRed. I missed two episodes while netless and tv less. So I missed how Guin got that way. But I am hoping they find out soon. I know Arthur is going to be difficult about learning about Merlin but I want to see them work through it.

  2. I’m 99.9% sure that Merlin isn’t coming back until the beginning of May, and they are airing the last 5 episodes during the whole month. And I’m getting antsy about Arthur learning about Merlin’s magic too- he just has to find out before the last episode! He needs at least a few episodes to work through it and come to the conclusion that magic isn’t all bad, that he owes his life to Merlin a gazillion times over because of magic, blah blah blah and they all live happily ever after. Oh yeah, and all of Camelot must bow down to the dragonlord. Nerd rant out.

    • I hate that it takes so long for a friggin series to gear up. GAH! I didn’t think I would like Merlin as much as I do. BUT I LOVE IT NOW.

  3. I just checked syfy.com’s site- Merlin returns Friday, May 3.

  4. loved Grimm:) Glad its back. Have to catch up on the others.

  5. I read just about all the Vampire Diaries books prior to the show and I thought the books were bland. I love the show but they don’t really follow the books. In the books Elena has a kid sister not a brother so I guess if I was being a bookie-I would say, It’s great since he wasn’t even in the books. However since I’m more a fan of the show-I hate that Jer has been killed off.

  6. I have got to get caught up on these shows. My DVR is almost full though I love to be able to sit down and watch 3 or 4 episodes back to back. Rather the way I read series books!

  7. Okay. So a lot of shows! Seeing as how I tend to blather on and on, I’m going to make a considerable effort to keep it brief.

    Merlin

I have to say I love my Merlin. But if they pull a “Merlin has magic” “The End”, I’m going to pitch a pretty big hissy fit! Imean an epic hissy fit! It will put toddlers to shame.
It’s just there has been so much build up and angst, that there needs to be some episodes where there’s a bit of adjustment. And we also want to see Merlin openly using magic!

    Being Human

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been to keen on Being Human this season. Mostly because Nora is really annoying me. There’s something else too, but can’t put my finger on it. It almost feels slightly forced. I will say I think it’s getting better though. So I’ll hold off until I see some more episodes.

    Lost Girl

Loving this! Tamsin has grown on me, since the teenager episode(really funny one by the way). But I love the Kenzie and I can’t wait to see what they’re going to do with the fae kidnapping. And her relationship with Dyson is awesome. But I’m waiting to see what’s going to happen with her and Hale. We haven’t seen them together since before she was kidnapped.

    Grimm

This show has awesome chemistry. Firstly I love that Rosalie is back. She brings so much to the show. As for the storyline, I have always said I have no idea where this is all going. I never have answers! Just so many questions! Like, Is Nick’s Mom going to show back up? What part does she play in all this?

And I think I kept all that to a minimum. Comparatively speaking.Just sayin!

  8. I feel so compelled to mention this and I wish I had known sooner. But Desiree Holt is going to be on a segment on Sunday Morning with Bille Geist! (you know it will be funny)

But if you miss it you can look at on their website after it airs.
