Bitten by Books
Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and The Markhat Files by Frank Tuttle (other).
I voted for Nalini Singh’s Archangel Series… although, her Psy-Changeling series is up there too.
Then I chose others because Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar world came to mind. Lackey created a world that I absolutely want to be lost in. I love it. But I have to say all of Lackey’s World Building is inspirational… I want to be as good as her.
Another that comes to mind too is Anne Bishop’s Blood/Dark Jewel series. That world is pretty darn interesting too.
Jennifer Roberson’s Sword and Cheysuli series also comes to mind
The Fever Series for sure and then I went with Jane Yellowrock books by Faith Hunter and Kushiel’s Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. The Kushiel’s series especially- that has generational building, historical myths, and is just really well done.
Obviously, the Tolkien books need to be up here too.
So, I have not read a single one of these, nor can I think of anything that I have… but I went with Martin’s simply because seeing how big those books are, and how much people talk about the show and all - sure seems like he has done a mighty good job at it! LOL
Love the Faith Hunter and Suzanne Johnson series worlds, too.
I picked Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson and the Hollows series. All three authors have built believable worlds that are consistent with the characters and plots. And they do not get fouled up from book to book in the series.
While I like everything I’ve ever read by Patricia Briggs, I actually prefer the world building in her Alpha & Omega books over the (related) Mercy Thompson Series. I’m also a huge fans of Gini Koch’s ‘Alien’ series. I’m constantly amazed at her ability to handle a large and ever-expanding cast.
Ditto with Alpha and Omega. I’ m starting to like it a little bit more myself.
Sommer Marsden’s Divination Falls series (shifter/empath) and Tara Lain’s Spell Cat series (witches, with a shifter in the last volume) have the best world-building I’ve read.
Oh, and Brandon Fox’s Pledged To Magic series, as I mentioned last week!
The world of skinwalker Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter is an awesome place to “be”. Also C.J. Cherryh’s Foreigner series is as complete and engrossing a “world” as Herbert’s Dune series but with a different “flavor”. Thanks for putting up the poll.
I think my favorite is the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, but the Harry Potter series was great, so vivid. Third choice is the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning
Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, Shifters series by Rachel Vincent and Dark series by Christine Feehan.
I had to pick Harry Potter and George RR Martin’s as everyone has seen and been enthralled with these worlds. Feehan’s Dark world was another no brainer pick for me as this world, after 27 books and counting, continues to drag me back in every single time. Actually, most of the ones listed have awesome worlds, one of the many things that have made them series I read and continue to follow.
I wish I had already read some more of the series on the list! I voted for Shifters, Mercy Thompson, and other. My other is for Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series.
Eternal Mates series by Felicity Heaton, Psy/Changeling series by Nalini Singh, Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter…
I vote for The Dresden files, Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire.
I haven’t read most of these so I have to go with what I know and that would be other - THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS.
So many wonderful series with great world building, it is very hard to narrow it down to three. I voted for the Hollows series by Kim Harrison, Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, and the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Happy Potter, Dresden Files and Steampunk Chronicles!
So many of these have some great world-building. But I chose Kim Harrison’s Hollows Series as one. I love the concept that the world of witches, vampires, demons, were and fae came out because of a tomato is awesome. I also have the book The Hollows Insider and the details surpass my expectations.
I also had to choose Harry Potter. For anyone who has read these books, it’s pretty clear that the world is super detailed and has an extensive world.
For the third, I chose Linda Robertson’s Persephone Alcmedi series. I love the details in the world of witches. Also I have to mention the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance. This world has built upon characters that exist in real life and reworks them. Also anything that can maintain sense in their world with time travel deserves a nod.
A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin (17%, 7 Votes only ?!?
Others: D.B. Reynolds, VIA JR Ward BDB
I voted for Kim Harrison. There’s so much in the Hollows for Rachel and Ivy to interact with and investigate. I wish this series hadn’t ended.
I chose the Harry Potter series as having the best world-building. Those books are so good and so compelling in their details.
I think the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is simply amazing~the details astound me!
I have to go with Harry Potter. It is very complete and timeless by not using any references to modern ‘muggle’ events or technologies.
Kate Daniels series would absolutely get my top vote. The details just come to life!
I love the world building in J. D. Robb’s In Death Series.
i choose Mercy thompson universe, Kate daniels ones and the hollows series because each of the are really well thought,n, original and consistant along the series
I voted for Nalini Singh’s Archangel Series… and had to pick George RR Martin’s and Feehan’s Dark world, as after 27 books and counting. Actually, I’ve not seen that I can chose ‘others’ at the end, as my absolute favs are D B Reynolds ‘Vampires in America’ and Lynsay Sands’s ‘Argeneau Vampire’ series.
my vote was
1. Fever Series
2. The Hollows
3. The Dark Series
I went Dresden, Hollows, and Mercy.
Had to pick only three so I picked Ilona Andrews, Nalini singh, and Patricia briggs. There are several more good series on there but those are my top three.
I voted for Christine Feehan’s Dark series. I have been so immersed in this series for sooooo very many years that it just feels real to me.
Almost anything by Alma Alexander… she builds marvellous detailed worlds. her latest series, The Were Chronicles (“Random”, “Wolf” - out in May 2015 - and “Shifter” - due out later this year/early 2016) are a particularly good example of this. They’re set in a world which is barely a step sideways from our own, and frighteningly easy to immerse in and believe in.
