Burn for Me, the exciting first installment in the Hidden Legacy series, hits the ground running, pulling the reader in to a fascinating world where magic means power-personal, political, and financial. In 1863, a serum was developed that enabled people to tap into their innate magical abilities, and despite the serum eventually being hidden away due the recognition of the dangerous individuals and situations it was creating, along with the potential for even more, the damage had been done. Now hereditary, magic creates dynasties which form Houses, wielding their power and wealth over those not so fortunate.
When the story opens, Nevada Baylor gets summoned to the office of Montgomery International Investigations, the large firm run by House Montgomery, which also happens to own her small, family-run Baylor Investigative Agency. Augustine Montgomery informs Nevada that he has a job for her: find an out-of-control Prime (a magical user of the highest order) who has just burned up a building and killed a man, and get him to surrender himself to the care of his family, the powerful House Pierce. Nevada understands immediately that Montgomery expects her to fail, as her firm does not have the manpower or the magic to accomplish the seemingly impossible task, but since she has been told she will lose her business if she does not comply, she has no choice.
During the course of her investigation, Nevada crosses paths with yet another Prime, the feared Mad Rogan, who has his own reasons for tracking down the rogue Pierce. The mismatched pair team up to achieve their respective goals, and along the way discover more may be going on beneath the surface than anyone expects, raising the stakes even higher.
Andrews excels at one of the defining characteristics of urban fantasy: depicting an engrossing world so much like our own on the surface but with a major modification shaping it into something completely different from the familiar. The intriguing premise of this excellent novel gets support from a cast of somewhat quirky yet believable characters who add both dimension and humor to the narrative, demonstrating why Nevada fights so hard to protect them. The tale’s first-rate pacing of the suspense and action wisely never overshadows the appealing players.
Both paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans will find much to admire in Burn for Me, and they, along with this reviewer, will be waiting to find out what happens in book two of the series.
