King by Right of Blood and Might by Anna L. Walls

King by Right of Blood and Might by Anna L. Walls“There came a day when everyone’s eyes were turned to the sky, to the exclusion of all else. Those who couldn’t see with their naked eyes, turned to their televisions, their computers or even their radios. They watched in helpless, disbelieving horror as an asteroid half the size of the moon approached with agonizing slowness and ground its bulk into the only orbiting body of this Earth. They watched as the two bodies fought for supremacy of the sky, and they watched them both lose.” And so opens the story of the destruction of Earth and the majority of its inhabitants. But the natural disasters were only the one piece of the destruction. Nuclear plants were obliterated, releasing radiation into the air, and disease and mutations were its legacy. But life is tenuous, and some managed to survive the initial catastrophe and those that followed it as dust covered the earth, blocking the sun, and ice overtook the land and seas. In time, the ice receded and the sun shone again and life started over.

Tens of hundreds of generations passed and the world was place of feudal kingdoms, roving bands of nomads and the ancestors of those early mutated survivors who now carried the gifts of healing, shapeshifting and psychic mind powers. And in Pennland resided Harris Penn, a young Prince with a penchant for curiosity and no outlet to exercise it. He wished to learn his Kingly duties, but his father never left the palace or seemed to do anything. His mother hated both her husband and son, and so the Prince spent endless days doing meaningless activities. A neighboring King and his son came to visit proposing a mutual fostership, and Harris left his home for the first time. His eyes were soon opened to what it meant to be a ruler, and he spent his time learning how to rule, how to fight and how to lead. Then came the day he learned about enemies after surviving an ambush and learned that his father was dead and Pennland in ruins. He returned home no longer a curious Prince but instead a grown man and future King. His greatest task would not be in claiming his throne and destroying his enemy. No, his greatest task would be in rescuing his people and rebuilding Pennland, and for that he would need allies, some of which were people known only out of myth and legends. It would be a formidable task indeed.

King by Right of Blood and Might is an epic tale of treachery and triumph. Harris Penn is called to his work to restore his land by Mother Earth herself and, in his purity and humbleness, he accomplishes almost the impossible. It is a chilling look at a conceivable future and the best and worse traits of humanity. The focus is not on the battles or the enemies but on the reclaiming and rebuilding of a people as well as a land. Using trust, respect and diplomacy, Harris is able to succeed overwhelming odds. He is also well prepared to take up the sword when there is no other option. Rather than conquering the inhabitants of his ruined nation, he pulls them together to work together for a prosperous future for all. And when evil must be exterminated, he does so with no hesitation. King by Right of Blood and Might is both thought-provoking and entertaining, with a solid premise, realistic characters and an important story to tell.
