Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Eureka, True Blood and Haven

Greetings, readers and viewers. This week we will discuss the return of “Eureka,” check on what’s going in “Haven,” and talk a little “True Blood.”

Your hostesses: Brit and Carol

Eureka, 9:00 Fridays, SyFy
How about this completely game-changing season of Eureka? These first two episodes appear to have set up an incredible storyline for the season. I am sure it must be very difficult to keep a show fresh yet at the same time familiar, like comfort food, to its fans. The time-travel/alternate reality element has utterly upped the stakes on this show. I have been engrossed watching the reactions of the six characters to their new “world.” Of course, since it is Eureka, some of the scenes have been very funny, but a few have been heartbreaking. Poor Carter…

What do you think of the new premise this season? Do you think they will be able sustain this situation for a whole season? Who is your favorite character?

Haven, Fridays 10:00 p.m. EST. Syfy

The second episode of Haven aired Friday night. I have to say I found this episode much more interesting than the first. We learn a little more about the characters and what makes them tick. I think that with most series they get better over time and you just have to hang in there.
I also liked Audrey’s character better this week. She had more emotion and was just much more likeable.

I enjoyed Bobby’s storyline — a boy whose dreams become reality. I thought it was pretty cool the way Audrey realized she could interact with Bobby in his dreams and get him to wake up. But the whole thing with the butterflies makes me look at them in an entirely new way.

I am anxiously awaiting discovering more about the Colorado Kid. The sheriff, (whom I thought didn’t want her around), offered Audrey a job, and of course she can’t resist staying in town to investigate. Hopefully we will learn something new with each episode.

Does anybody else want to give Nathan a big hug? He seems so lonely and vulnerable. It just breaks my heart. In next week’s episode Duke will be back and I’m sure that will make a lot of the ladies happy. Gotta love a dark, mysterious man.
Anyway, I will keep watching and hope with each episode a great new tv show is in the making.

True Blood Teaser: So, how do you like the series so far this season? Do you like it more or less than the previous two? Who is your favorite character on the show?

  1. I don’t tend to watch True Blood regularly. I like the books better.

  2. I love Eureka. I think this will make for a hell of a good twist. I don’t have a favorite character.
I really enjoy Haven! I liked all of the characters and it keeps me wanting more. Right there says alot about any show on tv. With so many channels to watch now it has made the industry a better place. After all you have to have a good following.
I don’t get True Blood because it HBO costs to much. But I do love the books! Thanks, Lisa D.

  3. I’m enjoying True Blood much more this season than last season. Last season was getting old fast for me.

  4. I actually don’t watch Eureka, not because I don’t want to, but when it first aired I think it used to come on at the same time as something else. I don’t even remember what show it was. But after I missed so many it was hard to catch up.

And unfortunately, I don’t get HBO, so I can’t watch True Blood. I’ll have to wait until the next season comes out on DVD next May like I did with the previous two.

But I did see the second episode of Haven. I agree, sometimes it takes a show a little time to get into a flow. I too liked this episode better. I never thought I’d see someone fear a butterfly so much. I loved when they both pointed their guns, not at the reverend, but the butterfly. Hilarious. And Yes! I love Nathan. It’s still early, but he might be my favorite character.

  5. I haven’t seen the first two shows and I’ve only seen a couple episodes of True Blood. I don’t watch a lot of TV.

  6. Well, I can’t put much input into this discussion, I feel so bad, still didn’t get to see haven, and missed eureka, but hey I DID see true blood, all the past episodes and I am up to date on the newest season. I did get a little tired of season 2, season 3 is good so far, but they are taking a lot of liberties with the books. Sometimes I swear it’s barely a passing nod. But that can be good in it’s on way. Then the viewers aren’t sure what’s going on, and they are good in their own right, so a person like me who has read all the books will still enoy the show cuz you never know what the heck is gonna happen!!

  7. I love both Eureka and TB. But I refuse to pay for HBO so I haven’t seen any episodes of TB this season yet. I love what Eureka’s doing, for the most part. Even though their situations, especially Henry and Jo’s, are in varying degrees of kinda sucky, you can’t say they don’t have highly imaginative, original writers.

I catch True Blood on and off, depends really when there is nothing better to watch on tv I tend to just settle with it. Dunno, just something about it doesn’t really grab me.

  9. I love Eureka. I’ve been watching from the beginning and think it’s a great season so far. My question is if they will ever bring back Allison’s husband (who was on True Blood).

I think Haven is growing on me.

This season of True Blood is sooo much better then last. Maryann was very annoying. I was glad to see her go. Now, this season with Alcide and the other shifters is great. I’m happy to see them adding a man for Lafayette.

  10. I don’t watch Eureka (though with Baltar on it now I might just have to…), but I am loving Haven! I want to hug Nathan so bad, he just looks so…love me long time you know?

I can’t wait to see Duke again!! Eric Balfour is so cute (though I guess it helps he’s shirtless in the preview?) and I want to know more about Duke (I keep wanting to think he’s Nathan’s cousin of half-brother or something along those lines…

I want to read Stephen King’s original story, but from the description it doesn’t look like it would help me much (plus…I don’t like his writing).

As for True Blood…I’m enjoying this season about as much as I enjoyed the other two seasons, maybe a little more since there was naked Eric early in the season. I’m getting tired of Sookie and I really hope Jason actually has a storyline/development that sticks. Go Lafayette, the man deserves some good.

Eric remains my favorite, but gosh Alcide looks good too…loyal to a dumb fault though…

    • I also like the idea of seeing Duke shirtless, now if we could add in Nathan that would be great.
The book isn’t anything like Stephen King’s other stuff. I t is written like a traditional crime mystery so you night actually like that.

  11. I love Eureka. I think this is really going to be a great season. I don’t have one favorite, I love them all.

  12. I used to watch Eureka all the time for the first two seasons. Then with mommyhood i normally don’t watch anything unless it is a singing yellow sponge or a bunch of kids running a webshow.

Haven is something i have heard people talking about but did not know really anything about. i will most def be looking forward to it this week tho.

i have only seen the first season of true blood. I like the books better too, but the show is good too.

  13. I don’t watch much tv but I do watch True Blood but I have only seen season 1. I will get Season 2 for my bday this year.

  14. So far season 2 of True Blood has been my favorite, but there arent really enough episodes of season 3 to really judge it yet. But I do love the actor they picked to play Alcide b/c he looks almost EXACTLY how I pictured him in my head when reading the books!

  15. Of the three series I’ve watched only Eureka yet. It’s so geeky that I can’t help loving it:) I’ve just started watching the 3rd season, so I don’t know if they bring Nathan back, but I’d really like that.

  16. I love Eureka, even when it makes choices I don’t like, it still works overall.

I agree about Haven showing improvement. I admit that I only really gave it a second chance because of my love of Eric Balfour, but I’m glad I did. I’m interested to see how this unfolds.

  17. My son likes Eureka more than I do. I do like the Haven show so far. It’s a bit differant. Love True Blood. I think this show keeps getting better. Eric is my favorite but; I am likeing the werewolf Sookie is hanging with~can’t remember his name right now.

  18. Shoot, I haven’t watched the 2nd episodes yet (still on tape/DVR). As soon as I have, I’ll be back.

  19. I have been discussing the “new-Eureka”‘ with friends since it aired!! After the first episode - inwas curious as to If they would be “staying” there. I also cannot contain my geekdom l anymore/ I love love seeing Gaius Baltar from Battlestar Galactica on Eureka. (yeah, I could call him by his real name, but let’s face it… He’s ALWAYS going to be Gaius! ;) Awesome! I know IMDB says he’ll be in a few episodes (was it 5? 6? I forget) he’s a good fit, IMO.

I feel bad for Jo - she ran back to say, “Yes” & her whole world is gone. :( Bum deal!

& Carter - I want him with Allison!

    • The book is nothing like the show (Haven). I haven’t read the book in years but remember that it was written like a straight forward crime drama. Guess I should probably read it again.

      • Libby, I agree — it is great to see James Callis on Eureka. I have enjoyed seeing him do something different, and he plays a very intriguing character with all sorts of nuances.

To me, the show itself has endless possibilities this season, and I don’t think it has been too predictable. I like it when I am surprised. :)

  20. I started watching the first season of True Blood, then I got annoyed with the accents and couldn’t take it anymore… Is that horrible?? *blush*

  21. Never seen Eureka, but I do watch Haven and True Blood, in real time.

Haven seemed easier to watch this week, which is nice, since it feels more like it’s settling in. Butterflies as harbingers was an interesting twist, I agree. I like mysteries, which is also why I liked Season 1 of True Blood best. That murder mystery really had a nice pace, as opposed to some of the dragging of the MaryAnne problem. That season did have its moments, though, don’t get me wrong, like Godric. :) 3rd season TB is definitely getting interesting, and after seeing the actor who plays Franklin previously in The Tudors, I didn’t think I was going to like him in this, but it is definitely turning into a crazy kind of hilarious. I love Lafayette, Eric’s humor and Alcide’s “man’s best friend”ness. :)

    Watched tonight’s Warehouse 13, too. :)

  22. Love that Eureka is back.
Haven’t had a chance to catch Haven yet. I’m trying to keep track of recording them. Hope I don’t miss any.
Can’t watch True Blood, and probably wouldn’t anyway as I never got into that series of books.

  23. Well, folks, I guess I can see the Duke attraction, but I find myself on Team Nathan. :)

    • Nathan is more handsome (in my opinion) and seems to be a nice guy and Duke seems like the typical bad boy.

  24. After only 2 episodes, I’ve fallen in love with Haven.

Watched Eureka the first two seasons and for some reason( probably a screwup with the DVR) never got back to it. Need to check it out again as I found it very imaginative and thought provoking.

Love Harris’s Sookie books but don’t get HBO so also need to run down the True Blood DVD’s
