A shape shifting calico cat, a were-jaguar, angry were-mountain lions, geneticists, celestial interference, and the ghost of a woman past all combine to make Into the Wild by Caitlyn Willows an interesting, different, somewhat confusing ride combining modern science with celestial influence to create a set of circumstances that, though amazingly improbable, combine to create a story that is developed but thoroughly unbelievable. Eternal by Crissy Smith
“Jo Black goes in search of a vampire — and finding one is going to rock her world. Immortal Nic Lucian finally meets his bond-mate, only to have her try to kill him. As he tries to introduce her to his world and reunite her with her sister who is now an immortal, he gets a lesson in modern women and how stubborn they can be.
Jo’s world has been turned upside down. The death of her sister introduces her to the world of vampire-hunting. Now she learns the hard way that crosses, stakes, holy water, and sunlight do not work. And you had better protect your heart and body, because when an immortal wants you, he gets you - one way or another.”
Jo as a character is…..annoying. She is the type of character who makes you want to slap some sense into her. She is written well enough to evoke a strong emotion in the reader, but as a heroine I find her irritating. Lucian is a strong, sexy, funny, guy who has no idea how to handle a “modern woman.” The characters are well-developed and three dimensional. Regardless of whether or not I find them appealing, the author knows how to create characters.
This is a generic derivative of a vampire novel. This book and this writer have potential, however it is as if she took every line from every vampire book she ever read and put it into this story. There is nothing original, nothing unique, nothing to make this book stand out against the masses of recently-released vampire books as the genre has continued to grow. This book shows that the author does have talent, and I would look at some of her other novels to see how they fare in comparison to this one. However, this book is a disappointment. It is what you do not want to see — nothing that would stand out against the massive numbers of books that litter bookshelves.
While I find fault with parts of this book, I feel as though the author has much talent. She is able to put words on a page and tell a story. It felt as if she had so much more to say, and that she could have taken the story farther or to a different place but she held herself back. The interaction between the sisters left a bitter taste in my mouth, whereas the interaction between Lucian and Jo was tingly and fantastic to read. Perhaps this book was over-edited, and the author ended up cutting out too much of her voice. I believe the author is much better than this book shows her to be.
