Romancing the Blood…
Hello, Bitten by Books! Fab to be back here, just a few weeks after my latest release, Blood Hungry, the sixth - and possibly last - in the Blood Hunters series.
So, I’ve been romancing the blood in this particular world for four years, now! In the process, I’ve united some powerful, needy, reluctant and downright unlikely couples in steamy relationships while they fight the bad guys and somehow help make the world a better place -whether they want to or not! From the moment Elizabeth Silk accidentally dripped blood onto the paralyzed body of the Ancient vampire Saloman (Blood on Silk), to the coming together of John Ramsay and the mysterious Eva in Blood Hungry, there has been much delicious neck biting, ass-kicking and personal discovery. And the nice thing for me as the author is that whenever the natural endings seem to come, the overall story goes on somewhere else, from some other angle, in the same world.
If you haven’t followed the Blood books, the story begins with the Awakened by Blood trilogy, and Blood Descent. Scottish academic, Elizabeth Silk accidentally awakens the long “dead” vampire Saloman, who explodes back into the world in a bloody programme of revenge and world domination.
Awakened by Blood focuses on Saloman’s rise, and his complicated relationship with Elizabeth. But although most conflicts were resolved by the end of Blood Eternal, the story continued in my head to the Blood Hunters series, which focuses on Elizabeth’s troubled friends the Hungarian vampire hunters. By the end of Blood Descent, the Blood world has changed. Vampires are emerging from the shadows, following Saloman’s rules; under his civilizing regime, they’re no longer quite so murderous and the hunters’ job has changed from execution to policing. Mihaela, Istvan and Konrad all have to come to terms in their own very different ways with this upturning of their worlds and the intrusion into their personal lives of powerful and sexy vampires.
With the Hungarian hunters happy at last, I almost left the Blood Hunters series – only there were other hunters, and a few more lovable vampires, who all clamoured to have their stories told. So I moved on to the enigmatic vampire Dmitriu, and from there to unofficial hunters Cyn and John Ramsay, who all face turning points in their lives and beliefs with the “miracle” birth of Saloman’s baby.
One of the fun things about writing on this kind of scale is meeting up with old characters again and watching them develop with the overall story. And it was great to be able to co-opt minor characters from earlier books as the heroes and heroines of later ones. In Blood Hungry, I think I brought everyone back for a speaking part . And I realized that although the story was still moving forward in my head, I was writing Blood Hungry a bit like a finale. And in many ways it is – a cycle uniting the past, present and future. So, I may leave it there.
Or I may return to the Blood world for a little more romance in a third incarnation…

Do you have a favourite vampire or vampire hunter from tv or movies?
Hi Minna! Good question!
I did like Angel and Spike from Buffy. And Bill and Eric from True Blood, especially in the early series.
Oh and you have to love Gary Oldman’s tragic Dracula…
Who are your favourites?
Marie
Congratulations on the publication of Blood Hungry! The Blood Hunters series sounds fascinating. Who are some of your favorite authors and how have they influenced your writing?
Hi Bonnie!
Thank you, and I’m glad to hear it!
Favourite authors! I’ll stick to a few paranormal ones, since that’s what we’re talking about tonight! Bram Stoker, of course! And Anne Rice who opened the way to seeing things from a vampire’s perspective :). Charlaine Haris for humour - I still giggle about her undead Elvis - Jeaniene Frost for kick-assery… To name but a few!
Do you have any recommendations? Always looking for new pnr authors
Marie
Anne Rice is one of my all-time favorites too. Other paranormal authors I would recommend are Sherrilyn Kenyon, Christine Feehan, J.R. Ward, Deborah Harkness, and Darynda Jones.
I’m with you on those, Bonnie! Though I have to try the last two still - thanks!
Marie
Hello, Bitten by Books! Rachel, thanks as always for organizing this!
Looking forward to chatting to everyone! How are you? What are you up to when not chatting here?
Marie
Hi Marie - Thank you for the great post. It sums it all up nicely. I’m looking forward to your books.
Not a book question but one on Scotland - I hear there are fantastic hot springs in Scotland. Have you ever been to them? If so was it to die for :)?
1. No, but I really want to see the new Dracula movie.
2. I love series and am fine with cliff hangers since I know I will be getting an answer.
3. I love both books and ebooks.
Thank you.
Hi Viki!
Thanks, and you’re welcome
To be honest, I’ve never come across hot springs in Scotland. I know they have amazing ones in Iceland and I’d love to go there one day. My friend went one winter, and told me about bathing outside under the stars, surrounded by snow, and being perfectly warm in the hot water. It sounded magical.
Thanks for your answers! And I’m looking forward to the new Dracula movie too!
Marie
Hello, Marie! Congrats on the new release! Interesting series and gorgeous covers! I love vamps so I’m definitely giving this series a go.
You say that maybe this is the last book of the series… What are you next projects? Maybe a spin-off of Blood Hunters?
Hi Serena! Thank you! I love the covers too - Kim Killion designed them all and I think she’s done a fab job.
Funny you should ask, I am thinking of a couple of new ideas for spin-off series - I find it hard to leave this world alone, although I think BLood Hungry is a natural stopping place for the Blood Hunters series. At least it seems so just now
Marie
That sounds good! I’ll look forward
Have you thought about writing a book with a werewolf in it? So far I’m going through your series but I haven’t found any.
Answers:
- No, I haven’t watched it yet but we are planning to go to the cinema with friends this week to watch it. =)
- I don’t like cliffhangers ‘between’ the characters… I like when they stay together even if they haven’t won the battle against evil (main plot).
- Both. I learned to love ebooks as much as I do with prints.
Yes, I love werewolves :). I have a few werewolf novellas with Changeling Press (the CITY OF THE DAMNED and WOLF HUNT box sets, plus Christmas of the Damned, a Christmas short). Also, there will be a glimpse of wolves in my upcoming Serafina’s story, SERAFINA AND THE FOUNDER - will probably build on that too
What’s your favourite werewolf story?
Thanks for your answers!
Marie
Author questions
I have not yet seen the new Dracula movie, but I really do enjoy this type of horror film. If I don’t see it in the theater, I will probably buy the movie on DVD when it comes out.
If a series book is well written, I don’t mind a cliff hanger at the end. However, I don’t like waiting a long time for the next book to be published.
Even though I read both ebooks and print, the print edition is still my favorite.
Thanks for your answers, Bonnie! I know some people who wait until a series is complete before they read the first book, because they hate waiting so much! I’m getting like that with tv series, thanks to box sets!
Marie
Hi Marie!
I haven’t seen the new vampire movie because I don’t go to the movies anymore. It’s too expensive. However, this new Dracula is HAWT so I will have to watch when it comes onto the premium channels!
I love series, but I hate cliffhangers unless the next book is coming out within the next month or two!
I love paperbacks. I have 2 kindle. One is full and the other has 300 books downloaded on it, but I will always go for the paperback first.
Hi Cindy!
I don’t go often myself, but might make an exception for this one if I can!
I don’t always go for paperback first, but although I’m very happy reading on Kindle, I do love to HAVE physical books
Marie
What tv shows are must see for you? I seem to enjoy the paranormal ones like Grimm and Supernatural myself.
Hi Susan!
I do want to see both of these, but I have to see things from the very beginning and I haven’t found the beginning yet! I did enjoy Penny Dreadful and am looking forward to the new series. Also Hannibal, and right now, The Blacklist. And Dr. Who when I catch it! And I still need to see the final series of True Blood…
Marie
What’s the hardest thing you face when writing?
Hi Rhonda,
For me, it’s when the characters just won’t gel, and then nothing works
Marie
Haven’t seen Dracula yet but want to. I prefer printbooks but read both. I don’t mind cliffhangersif I know it’s going to be one because Iwill wait until the next book is released or about to be released to read it. I won’t be able to concentrate on the other books I’m reading if I don’t.
Thanks, Rhonda! I relate
Marie
Is there anything you would never write about in your books?
Hi Lindsey!
Difficult one! At the moment, I don’t think I’d rule anything out, except the usual ick ruled out by most publishers …
Is there anything (apart from the usual ick!) you wouldn’t read about?
Marie
If you could be any paranormal creature for a day - what creature would you choose to be and why?
Ooh, I don’t know, Raonaid! Maybe a witch, so I could fix things to suit myself
Marie
My partner is going away for a night or two this weekend leaving me to have some peace and quiet time to myself. What do you enjoy doing when you have an opportunity to just relax by yourself?
I write
Or sometimes, bury myself in a book, or watch a lot of tv that no one in the house but me likes! Enjoy your time off
Marie
I haven’t seen the new Dracula movie and will probably wait until it hits the TV as wouldn’t be able to encourage anyone to watch it with me
Re cliffhangers in series, I kinda like a soft one lol, so the story kinda wrapt up but something left over that can be investigated in the next book. So each book has it’s own story but there is an overall ARC that is followed as well.
I prefer Ebooks as have a Kindle I take everywhere with me and enjoy being able to carry my library in my bag
Thanks, Emmad! Love the term soft cliffhanger
Marie
Who’s seen the new Dracula movie, and what do you think? If you haven’t seen it yet, do you want to?
—- The hubby and I really do want to see it. It looks interesting, and well, we liked the actor when he was in Hobbitt.
If you like reading series, how do you feel about cliff-hangers at the end of such books?
—- Cliff-hangers drive me bonkers!!! Simply because I do not have the patience to wait however long it takes the next book to release. Unless of course, I have the next book. Then I am okay.
Do you prefer ebooks, print, or both?
—- Print all the way. Too much drama involved with ebooks. I rather have the say what I do with my books…
Thanks, Raonaid!
Marie
Hate to leave your company, but have to snatch a few hours sleep! Back in (my) morning
Marie
How long does it take you too write a book? Does life slow you down?
Good morning, Laurel!
I have written a book in as little as three weeks, but that did mean doing absolutely nothing else :). Two to three months is probably more normal, although if it;s being difficult, or if real life makes demands, then yes, that does slow me down
Marie
Of the stand-alone novels you’ve read, which one would you like to see get a sequel?
To answer your giveaway questions:
I have not seen the Dracula movie, but it looks interesting. I’m not sure if I’d watch it, though.
I’m not a huge fan of cliff-hangers. I like each book to have it’s own resolution.
I prefer print books, but I do have a Kindle that I enjoy using at times.
Thanks, Lindsey!
Marie
What would you call your autobiography & why?
CHAOS probably - it describes my life in a word
Marie
If you could go back in time would you jump at the chance or decline, worried you would change the course of history?
Hmm - interesting question, Bethany!
I probably wouldn’t be able to resist, since I love history and would love to see if things happened how and why we think they did. But yes, safety guards would be good!
Maybe some history could benefit from a change of course, but who knows if you wouldn’t actually make it WORSE???
Marie
Do you have a favorite place to write?
Hi Cheryl,
I do have a room I like to write in - a little sitting room at the back of the house full of books and decorated with stuff we’ve brought back from holidays abroad. But in reality, it’s not always available - my kids use it for sleepovers and guests too. So I write anywhere - in bed, on the sofa, wherever I can get enough peace.
Marie
Hi Marie! Are you a plotser or a pantser? Have you ever written any dragon/dragonshifter stories?
I have not seen the new Dracula movie and do not plan to. I HATE cliffhangers. I like print books for reading at home, and reading on my Kindle everywhere else.
Hi Mary!
By nature I’m a panster, but I’ve become a bit more of a plotter as I’ve gone on - it really does help to have more idea where you’re going :). So I suppose I’m a bit of both now
Marie
Forgot to answer your other question about dragonshifters! I have dipped my toe in with my series about the mythical Dragul who emerged from below the ground after nuclear holocaust destroyed most of the population of Earth - they are dragon shifters among many other things. DRAGUL RISING and its sequel series, ROGUE WARRIORS are available in box sets from Changeling Press, Amazon etc.
Good answers, by the way
Marie
hi Marie,
I have not yet seen the new Dracula
I do not like cliffhangers in books
I still prefer print
who is your fav Dracula?
Hi Dina!
Thanks for your answers!
Fav Dracula….oh I don’t know! I’ve always had a soft spot for Christopher Lee, but maybe overall, Gary Oldman. Who is yours?
Marie
he was a good one, even tho Dracula 2000 flopped, loved Gerard Butler
What about the strange, slightly steampunk Dracula series with Jonatan Rhys Myers? I could never quite buy into his Dracula!
Marie
Who’s seen the new Dracula movie, and what do you think? If you haven’t seen it yet, do you want to?
No. it’s look it’s going to give the nightmares
If you like reading series, how do you feel about cliff-hangers at the end of such books?
—– Cliff-hangers drive me crazy
Do you prefer ebooks, print, or both?
Since I got my kindle both But my first inclination is print I just can’t help it
Hi Sarit!
Good answers - thanks! No one wants nightmares
Marie
Wow, so many wonderful books. What happens if you get a block?
Thank you, Debra!
If I get a block, I try and struggle through it until the story flows again. If that doesn’t work, I work on something else, or take a break altogether - that usually works because I hate not to be writing
Marie
What is your favorite genre to read and write? Have you ever based a character on someone you’ve met?
Hi Sherry!
I read in any and all genres, but write mostly paranormal - I love letting my imagination loose!
I think I use bits of people I know in my characters - they’re composites rather than one poor guy plonked on the page :). Sometimes just strangers’ faces inspire me to give them characters that are probably wide of the mark, so they wouldn’t recognize themselves!
Marie
Marie
if you could go anywhere in the world for a vacation where would you go?
Oh dear, so many place I want to go! Back to Turkey, which has become our favourite holiday destination! Would love to see America and Russia, India and the far east…. One day!
Marie
Answer Authors Questions
1. Have not seen it but would love to just can’t afford going to the movies have not been to the movies in at lease 4 or more years.
2. Don’t like Cliff Hangers in less I all ready have the next book in the series.
3. Both = love real books the best but my shelves are full and you can get e-books so much faster.
Thanks for your answers, Stacey! Hard to fit the movies in when times are hard!
Marie
If you could do a crossover with any book, film, or TV series, what would it be and why?
Probably Buffy or True Blood - loads of humour and bizarre happening to intrigue my characters :). And I’d love to see them interact with some of those TV characters
Marie
I actually had to look up the new Dracula movie, to be honest! So, not super-excited…
I usually hate cliffhangers, but if they’re subtle (a couple of loose ends that drum up intrigue, rather than a cheesy and openly desperate play for readers), they can work.
I like e-books for text-heavy stuff, especially fiction. I prefer print for formats with lots of photos, and especially for cookbooks. I still can’t get into cooking from a Kindle!
Thanks, Trix - good answers!
Marie
Hi, where is your favorite place to relax and read?
No I haven’t seen it yet but I want to.
I love cliff hangers but I hate waiting more that a few months.
Both, print and e-books
Hi Laura!
Favourite place to read is probably bed! But also the front room sofa, buses, trains, beach, garden - anywhere really
Thanks for the answers!
Marie
After being a writer, what is your dream job?
Hi Linda!
I don’t really know! Working with old books, maybe, or in one of those old stately homes or castles that are steeped in history and/or ghosts :).
Marie
What genre(s) would you never write?
Hi Dovile!
Actually, I don’t think there are any genres I wouldn’t write if the right story came to mind!
Marie
1) I haven’t seen the new Dracula movie. I’m not a fan of the whole Dracula story, to be honest, so I don’t really want to see it.
2) I don’t like when the book ends too abruptly. I like when at least some things are resolved at the end and some are set up to be explored in later novels.
3) I prefer print books, but I’ve read some ebooks too. I don’t have an ereader, so I read them on my PC, and I find this way of reading too distracting from the book itself.
Fair enough! And yes, I wouldn’t like reading on my PC either. E-readers are definitely a blessing
Marie
How hard was it for you to get published for the first time?
Hi Spencer!
Actually, I was really fortunate - I had my first submission accepted. But I quickly discovered there’s more to selling books - let alone making a living from selling books! - than writing and being published
Marie
Do you ever fear that the publishing world is overrun with Vampire novels? How do you set yours apart from the others?
Hi Amanda,
There are certainly a lot of them! And I suppose there will be for as long as the demand is there. But I think every author builds a different world around their vampires, with a different mythology to appeal to readers. In this series, I wanted my vampires to stand out as inhuman. They’re not just brave men who happen to be immortal - they’re seriously dangerous beings and not just to the bad guys. And although they do have feelings, they’re not human feelings and so although they can fall in love in their own way, they have difficulty connecting to their human lovers…
And lots more
Marie
Hi Marie!!! I noticed in your bio that you manage to avoid housework. How do you manage that? Is there magic involved? Elves? I need your secret.
Oh, I wish for elves and magic every day - or even a cleaner - but they never appear! I suppose I only avoid it AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE :). When I realize the house is degenerating into a pigsty, then I’m forced to do something. But I don’t have to like it!
What will readers walk away with after reading “Blood Hungry “?
Hi Lisa!
I suppose everyone takes something different from a book, but I hope readers will feel immensely satisfied, happy, and ready for more - in whatever form that might be!
What do you like to walk way from a book with?
Marie
First of all I want some of my questions answered (especially if it’s a series book) but more than that-I want that feeling that I must have he next book NOW (even if i know it’s a year away)
I can relate to that, Lisa! Nothing worse that never knowing - or feeling you never will!
Marie
What is your favourite season ? Mine is summer
Mine too, Alexandru!
Marie
Did you used to do well in school on writing assignments? When did the bug to write really take hold of you?
Hi Paula!
Yes, I did, actually
I always write stories, at home, at school, so I was certainly bitten early
From the age of five or six, probably - I even had a publisher picked out, which amused my father no end
Marie
Your questions:
1) I haven’t seen it yet but I will def. go see it.
2) I don’t mind a cliff hanger but sometimes I need to go back and refresh my memory of what leads up to the whole thing before starting the new book.
3) I never thought I would give up books for an ereader but I have and am very happy with the lack of clutter next to my bed! I have some very old books and love to look through them occasionally and they wouldn’t translate well to electronic methods. So a little of both but I love the convenience of grabbing my Kindle and heading out the door.
Great answers, Paula! Thanks!
Marie
Who’s seen the new Dracula movie, and what do you think? If you haven’t seen it yet, do you want to?
I do plan to see it
If you like reading series, how do you feel about cliff-hangers at the end of them?
I feel like they are an absolute must.
Do you prefer ebooks, print, or both?
I’ve had a Kindle (in fact my third one) for as long as they have been out and until recently I’d have said the print as I had a hard time getting “lost”in the story on the Kindle but lately that seems to be changing
Thanks, Lisa - I think it does depend what you;re used to. And the more you use the Kindle, obviously the more used you get! I find that too
Marie
What is your favorite food?
Cake
I’m not sure if I want to see the new Dracula movie.
Fair enough, Lily! Why not? What doesn’t appeal?
Marie
I like cliff-hangers in book series if they’re done well.
Me too
Marie
I prefer print books.
A lot of people do. Do you read ebooks too, if you can’t get a print version?
Marie
