Author Harper Kincaid Interview and $30.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Bind Me Before You Go (Entangled Brazen) (Serve) by Harper Kincaid BBB: What’s your favorite type of party?

HK: Small dinner parties of around eight to ten people. Big crowds overwhelm me, so these are perfect - especially if someone else is cooking!

BBB: What’s your funniest memory as an author?

HK: When I told my mother-in-law about my books, thinking she’d be shocked when I explained they’re ‘really kinda dirty’ and her eyes got all glittery and she responded, ‘Good! I’m counting on it!” She’s a trip!

BBB: We all need a hero! Tell us about your protagonist(s)? Was there a real-life inspiration behind him or her?

HK: Gosh, if I knew a Davill Cavill in real life I’d be in bed all day with him and not writing about it! No, his character is totally imaginary, but I did model his physical appearance as a cross between Henry Cavill and David Giuntoli from Grimm - hence the name, David Cavill.

BBB: Please tell us more about Bind Me Before You Go and the storyline that drives it. (Don’t use the book synopsis, please write this in your own words.)

HK: Bind Me Before You Go is really about two people trying to escape where they came from and trying to find out who they’re going to be - and they use sex and rope bondage as a vehicle to get there. This is not a typical BDSM story. It’s not about the rope. It’s about Cassidy learning to stop pleasing others and find what drives her as a woman - both sexually and emotionally. And for David it’s about actually learning to let go of his preconceived notions about himself and where he comes from in order to find some happiness.

BBB: How many more books will there be in the Serve series?

HK: Great question! I don’t think there’s any end in sight as of now, as long as readers are interested in the characters we are all creating.

BBB: What sets Serve series apart from other books in the same genre?

HK: So much! First of all, we have a bevy of authors who contribute to this series - not just one or two. Also, many of the stories we explore aren’t just copycat 50 Shade stories. They are as varied and multidimensional as the authors themselves.

BBB: What types of characters can readers expect in your world?

HK: While the men are certainly strong, they aren’t the typical doms. Also, my heroines are sassy chicks. They aren’t some doe-eyed ingenues blankly looking to some guy to tell them what sex is all about.

BBB: While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

HK: Oh sure! There’s a LOT of me in Cassidy.

BBB: What was the hardest part of writing Bind Me Before You Go?

HK: Trying to determine which kink I was going to write about when I wasn’t part of this world. I did a lot of research though…my internet browser history would shock the neighbors!

BBB: If you were a color what color would you be and why?

HK: LOL - Variations between red and hot pink. The answer should be obvious, but just to make sure…yes, I’m passionate and playful, intense and dramatic. Sometimes.

BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2015?

HK: I’m in the midst of reworking the next book for me in the Serve series, called CLAIM ME BEFORE I BREAK and the last book in my Break on Through series with Samhain called GIRL BREAKER. I’m so excited for both of them!

Author Bio:

A woman with the heart of a revolutionary,The mind of a pragmatist, And the inappropriate humor of your tipsy BFF.
Born in California and raised in South Florida, I’ve moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on my head ever since. Along the way, I’ve worked as a community organizer, a professional matchmaker, an art teacher, a popular blogger, and a crisis counselor (to name a few). All the while, longing to have the guts and follow-through to do what I really wanted: to write and become a published author. That wish has finally come true and I’m tickled hot pink with confetti over it.

What else? Hmm…I’m a kid of the Seventies and I love indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl, wearing black, the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to me laugh ’til they snort. I’m a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but have now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia.

  1. Hi Harper!

Thanks so much for being here with us at Bitten by Books today. It’s great to have you here.

My question for you is; what do you like to do for fun besides reading or writing?

    • Those are certainly my two go-tos but I also love going to the theater - esp in NYC when I can afford it! Oh and documentaries. So yeah, activities where I can sit on my ass a lot!

  2. Which are some of your favourite books?

  3. To answer your questions that are on the Giveaway Tools widget:

    1. If you could pick any place in the world to start over, where would you pick and why?

Europe, because even though there are big cities, there is still a sense of slower paced living and not a lot of 24/7 instant gratification that we have here in the US.

    • Harper where would you go to start over? I know you mentioned you have moved a lot.

      • I vacillate between wanting the middle-of-nowhere experience - like Lisa mentioned earlier…or wanting to be in the thick of it, like in NYC. VERY different types of start overs!

Prob would all come down to $$$. Sigh.

  4. 2. What is the craziest thing a friend has ever asked you to do?

Probably skinny dipping in the lake in a ritzy neighborhood. Which we did and it was fun! LOL

    What about you Harper?

  5. 3. If you could pick a kink for the next Serve novel, what would it be?

Uhmmm hmmm. Maybe role playing? Doctor! woohooo lets hear it for the doctors. LOL

What about you Harper? What would you pick?

  6. What inspired you to write your first book?

    • My first PUBLISHED book was RULE BREAKER…but before that? So many books in other genres, which are littering landfills all over the globe. But I’m going to assume you mean romance because that’s our crack of choice around here, right?

So important to find your genre and your voice because once I found THAT…my first romance book came into place. RULE BREAKER is a light read…but based on a key element of my personality: better to ask forgiveness than permission. I hate rules, especially the ones for dating which say you have to play games in order to find the man for you.

So I thought it would be fun to write a book about a woman who does the complete opposite of The Rules for Dating and still finds her dream man.

Ironically? I used the rules back in 1912 when I was dating my husband - so there. What about you Lisa? Rules or no rules for dating to find your man?

  7. If I had to start over I would go to the Shetland Islands: remote and quiet.
I had a friend that wanted me to lie to a judge in a small claims suit she was in: No way!
I am not into “kink” so I could not answer this question.

    • What a kick-ass answer with the Shetland Islands! I’m considering that one for myself! And good for you for not lying in court - was she sniffing glue or something?

  8. Hi! :) What’s one thing that you must do/see/eat/whatever when you visit NYC? :)

    Lois

    • LOL - great question Lois! I have to 1) Go to Katz’s Deli for a pastrami sandwich. And no, I don’t moan like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally movie, and 2) I have to see a show. It doesn’t have to be Broadway, but it has to be something on the stage. It’s New York!

      What about you???

    • and your questions -

      - (almost) Anywhere but where I am presently would be good…

      - honestly can’t think of anything for here… guess it’s been a long time since I had a friend around to actually ask them to do anything! LOL

      - I have no idea - don’t know what you’ve already used, don’t know what the typical ones are to even suggest one! LOL

      • That’s ok…when Entangled asked me if I was comfortable writing about kink/BDSM I was like ‘uh…sure!’ Then I spend the rest of the day looking the stuff up! LOL.

Whatever floats someone’s boat is fine with me - as long as it’s safe, sane, and consensual. I know most people will hear ‘rope bondage’ and get nervous but I swear, I kept that element really light in the book. It’s really about two people falling in love.

  9. Hello! Has your many careers helped offer inspiration for your writing?

    • You bet, especially the last one as a social worker. Cassidy works as one for a big time New York hospital. But it’s the jobs that didn’t go so well that I think will make for better stories (I’m thinking my brief stint as a matchmaker)…

  10. Can you tell us about a funny or memorable event which inspired an event in one of your books?

    • Hmm…great question! I think in this book, when Cassidy is quoting lines from Goodfellas? Yep that’s totally me at that every cocktail party after a few drinks.

Okay, maybe that’s just funny to me. I love mob movies.

  11. Do you like to write indoors or outdoors?
    1. Maybe I’d start over in New Zealand.
    2. She had me drive her car home from Canada. I was underage and had no license. She was drunk and I was not.
    3. I’m not a kinky person.

    • If the weather’s perfect, I’d love to write outdoors! But I live right outside of DC and it’s very humid in the summer and fickle every other day, so it’s indoors for me. Good question though :)

New Zealand! Another great answer! Why didn’t I think of that!

  12. Congratulations on the release of Bind Me Before You Go! Who is your favorite character from the books you have written?

    • Hi Bonnie!

Out of the men I’ve written about, David Cavill is definitely my favorite. I wrote him as my ideal man in mind to tell you the truth (blush)…but I also have to say, I adored Cassidy as my heroine. I really did…but I have another book that has been released today - called HEART BREAKER - with another sassy heroine named Samantha. I love her too! Damn it! It’s hard to choose!

Great question - you’ve stumped me.

  13. Hey everyone! Just found out that BIND ME BEFORE YOU GO is #4 on Entangled Publishing’s Top Ten Sellers of the Week! Wanted to share the happy - y’all are the first to know!

  14. Nikki Noffsinger

I RSVP’d. I think it’s great to find a new author like Harper Kincaid. What are your other favorite genre’s of books to write/read? Which of these would you say are more like you:

    1. 9 1/2 Weeks or Fifty Shades of Grey?
    2. Hot Fudge Sundae or Banana Split?
    3. Rock n Roll or Country?
    4. Carey Grant or James Dean?

    • Hey Nikki! Your hair color is TOTALLY RAD!!! Sorry I digressed there…

Such an awesome question!!! And here ya go!

      1. 9 1/2 weeks. Definitely. That shit is based on a TRUE STORY. I’m only hoping to have such amazing sexual adventures in my lifetime!

      2. Hot fudge sundae - like the mix of hot and cold.

      3. Rock n Roll. Born in the 70s. It’s in my blood ;)

      4. Hard to choose because neither really do it for me…but I’ll always choose a bad boy. Always.

      • Nikki Noffsinger

Hahahahaha I looooved 9 1/2 Weeks and I always go for the hot fudge. I am always a rocker chick. I mean I appreciate country and a few songs I actually like but I love Rock. Well if you would have chosen Carey, I would have figured that you liked to take things a little safe. I live 14 miles from where James Dean was born and raised. Fairmount has a yearly festival for James Dean and even the Rebel Run. I consider myself a definite rebel. I’m a red headed step child so I guess it’s in my DNA.

  15. Nikki Noffsinger

If I could start over anywhere it would be a tough because I have always wanted to see Ireland, Scotland, parts of Europe, and New Zealand. So I am afraid, I would just be one of those people who move from place to place and everywhere would be a new adventure.

  16. Nikki Noffsinger

The craziest thing I have ever been asked to do (and consequently did) was to sneak into someone’s backyard pool. Here’s the funny scary part. We were in our bras and under panties when we notice someone had TAKEN our clothes and lights were coming on. We ran but we had no clothes. We had to run-walk 2 miles in our underwear on a state road back to my friend’s house at like two in the morning. We still never found our clothes.

    • See? Crazy=naked! See earlier discussion/threads to see what I’m talking about!

      • Nikki Noffsinger

Hahahahaha. I have done some crazy things but that was probably one of the most craziest because I thought we were seriously going to either get thrown in jail or picked up by some lonely crazed trucker.

  17. Nikki Noffsinger

I have yet to read the Serve books but I’ll say a 7 Deadly Sins kind of theme. I’ve read some and they are either just okay or to the point where I feel like I am going to yak. I bet you could pull it off though.

    • I’ve got to hand it to the writers and staff at Entangled. Even though we are dealing with kink? I never feel any of it gets too freaky - and trust me, girl - I did a LOT of research for these books! You can make a wrong turn towards weird in a heart beat.

BIND ME deals with rope bondage, but I swear, it’s really not about the rope! It’s about two people with messed up pasts who fall in love. The rope is really more of a metaphor. But read it and tell me what you think - for reals.

      • Nikki Noffsinger

See that’s what I dig. I mean I’m all about the kink (married 21 years-I have to be into something or I would have killed him by now) but I don’t like books that read like someone drafted it from a porn movie (which if that is your thing…I have no prob.) or has no connection to the characters or any semblance of a story. I didn’t care much for Fifty, but I loved Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series, Kit Rocha’s Beyond books, and now I get to add Harper Kincaid to the list. :)

  18. You already are. Believe it.

  19. hi Harper,

do you like to do reader conventions?

What is the craziest thing a friend has ever asked you to do? go on the rollercoaster on the Vegas Stratsphere, I am afraid of heights and thankfully it was closed, lol

    • Hey Dina,

Thanks for stopping by! I can’t WAIT to do readers conventions! I am def planning on going to RT in Vegas in April 2016 - maybe more? We shall see. Got any suggestions?

  20. What is your favorite movie that was based on a book.

  21. Hey, you live so close to me (Burke, VA)! I feel like even though I live in a major metropolitan area that authors almost never come around here. All the cool conventions and events are far away. Anyhoo, I saw that you were an art teacher and was wondering if you can help me out. My daughter is almost 6 and can’t really draw anything that looks like something. But I’ve been hesitant to try to teach her because I don’t want to influence her style or teach her there is an absolute right way to draw things (I hope that’s made sense so far?) Any advice or resources you could point me to would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    • Ok let me dust off that part of my brain!

At her age most of what she will do won’t look like anything and most art programs will emphasize ‘process’ over ‘product’ anyway. As a mom I used to get soooo frustrated over that too! Truth is? Her fine motor skills are still developing and it’s going to be hard for her to make anything complicated.

So for now? Either keep it simple and let her paint with lots of colors and have her enjoy herself. If she ends up frustrated and hating art, then she won’t do it later when her skills catch up. Also, have her work with clay. There are some awesome clay classes for kids her age - and that are age and skill appropriate. I don’t know of any in Burke - but you know Fairfax County Park and Rec Department has a ton of stuff and resources.

      I hope that helps :)

  22. You mentioned your browser history would shock the neighbors. Do you ever have one of those moments when you think- “I can’t believe I just searched for that?”

  23. answers to the author questions:
    1. Ireland… I just think it would be cool to live there.
    2. My friends are pretty boring… hell, i’m boring… probably the craziest thing I’ve ever done was jump out at moving cars from a corn field doing an Urkle impersonation when I was like 12…
    3. Something food related…

  24. Do you have a guilty pleasure when it comes to books or TV or music?

    • Oooohhh yeah. And it’s a doozsey. Ready for it?

      Barry Manilow.

Don’t knock it. I grew up in the 1970s and he was playing all the time. I love his music from that period and that’s my guilty pleasure and I’m sticking to it ;-)

  25. Name your top 3 favorite things (other than writing) to do and why

  26. Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

  27. The Maritime Provinces appeal to me, or maybe Montreal or Quebec City (hope my French holds up).

I can’t think of anything-guess we were all pretty dull. I remember some guy friends wanting me to buy a Playgirl as a gag gift for our most innocent-looking college dormmate, since I was the only 18-year-old girl in the crowd, but I said no. (I buy much smuttier things now, but only for myself. Go fig.)

M/M hockey, what can I say? The gear alone is pretty freaky…

  28. What would you call your autobiography & why?

    • “Ask Forgiveness Not Permission”

Why? Because I hate rules and authority…yeah, I have issues. I’m better now that I’m older and more mature (ahem)…but for a long time that was my mantra.

      Great question!

  29. What other genres would you have an interest in writing?

  30. Raonaid Luckwell

If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give? A pro to becoming a writer? A Con?

    • The most important advice? Treat this as a job, even if you can only do it part-time. Take it seriously. That means write almost every day. Set up a website. Make business cards. This is your dream? Then treat it with the respect it deserves :)

The pro to being a writer is writing a story which takes a reader away from their troubles - even if just for a little while. A con? Trying to make a living off of one’s writing is a slow build…but I can’t imagine doing anything else! I feel so blessed and grateful to be able to write stories people enjoy.

  31. Raonaid Luckwell

If you could pick any place in the world to start over, where would you pick and why?
—- The only places in the world I would ever want to start over is: Scotland, Ireland, Japan or New Orleans. Ireland and Scotland have such history, I would love to immerse myself in the druid history and listen to the gaelic language (guys in kilts). Japan because I love anime and manga. I’m very impatient. New Orleans because it’s seeped in mysticsm.

What is the craziest thing a friend has ever asked you to do?
—- Goddess, that is a difficult one to answer. Only because I am certain there have been many things… Co-worker and friend (we worked at McDonalds) were always up to shenanigans there. Oh the stories I can tell… High school friend dared me to run naked in her back yard at night. LOL

If you could pick a kink for the next Serve novel, what would it be?
—- Mmm, I am not really into kink (and the hubby is a prude) so I would not really know WHAT to suggest.

  32. Share 3 unique things about yourself with us please

    • Hi Jo Anne!

Okay…three unique things about me. Alright I’ve got a few!

      1. I used to work as a professional matchmaker. Really! I sucked at it btw, but ironically, when I did it for free? Made five matches that led to engagement/marriage.

      2. I don’t love to cook but I make the best homemade chicken noodle soup ever. I swear!

      3. I actually don’t think I’m that unique at all - and in a culture filled with narcissists? That makes me the most unique of them all ;-)

  33. 1. Scotland — always wanted to go there and think it would be awesome to actually live there - its such a beautiful country and my ancestors came from there
    2. go bungee jumping
    3. not sure what to say here — maybe a public location

  34. Do you have any writing or reading rituals?

  35. 1. If you could pick any place in the world to start over, where would you pick and why?

I would pick the Canada or Sweden because they both have universal health care and college is free.

    2. What is the craziest thing a friend has ever asked you to do?

sky diving and applying for jobs as exotic dancers

    3. If you could pick a kink for the next Serve novel, what would it be?

role playing maybe with a hot police officer or a naughty librarian lol

  36. Hi Harper and Congratulations! Great interview and I love your mother-in-law’s response! Your book sounds amazing! What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to research a book? Wait a minute, considering your books, I’d like to retract that question! LOL

    My answers to your questions:

    1. I’d live near a beach, not a really commercialized one but one that I come across as I’m traveling and think this is IT!

    2. I can’t think of anything really crazy~when I was a kid, the typical ~ I was with you, don’t tell my parents…

    3. I can’t really help with that one…

  37. If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?

    • I’ve already done it all before I was writing. I did an okay job at other things, but writing is the only ‘job’ that feeds my soul. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Really. So I won’t even allow for another option.

  38. What is the best part about writing a book? And what is the worst?

  39. What actors would you pick for the cast of your book?

    • Ooooh! Here’s my casting list:

      Cassidy Peyton: Jennifer Lawrence
      David Cavill: Henry Cavill
      Allison Sinclair: Jennifer Connelly
      Leo Delacroix: Wentworth Miller

  40. who is your favorite author?

    • Hard question. I can’t pick just one. I love Hermann Hesse, William Styron, Marge Piercy, Cara McKenna, those who present characters with a darker psychological edge, even if my own have more humor to them.

But I also adore Sylvia Day, Kristen Ashley, Colleen Hoover…this is like asking me to pick my favorite child!

  41. Hi Harper!!! I bet that doing research for your books has to be pretty interesting. :) Do your friends now ask you for sex advice after reading what you write? Can you go to the ‘toy’ store and write off purchases as a tax deduction? :) Honestly, I’m just curious what interested you in writing erotic/kink stories. I feel like a lot of people get embarrassed by the whole subject,

    • You would think my close friends would come to me, right? Actually most of them are friends with me DESPITE me writing the dirty! That said? Many came to me for sex advice before I was published because I was always known as the one with the bawdy mouth and sense of humor.

Unfortunately, no…I do not get a write off for my sex toys and yes I did ask my accountant about that!

What got me interested in the subject in the first place wasn’t sex - it was people and romance! Sex was a byproduct of that. Don’t get me wrong…I love sex…but what drew me to this genre was the magic of two people from different worlds coming together and navigating so much to make it work. That fascinates me to no end…

And the sex? Sex - and writing about it - is the ultimate metaphor for the unconscious and how two minds decide to play together through the visceral, the physical. People get hung up on a story’s kink factor - but for me? Cassidy and David’s story isn’t about the rope. And when I write about Allison and Leo’s story, it won’t be about people watching them…it’s all just an allegory I’ll use for these lovers to both hide and reveal each other throughout the story.

At least that’s how I see it :)

  42. Amanda Sakovitz

Where’s your favorite place to write?

  43. Linda Szymoniak

Do you have any big plans before summer ends? Like vacations, etc.?

    • Going to Vegas with the family! Woohoo! You?

      • Linda Szymoniak

I typically take several “mini” vacations every year. I attend anime conventions with one of my daughters (it’s been years now, but originally all three would go with me). We just got back from Baltimore - a three day convention with an all-night drive to get there and another one coming back. It’s a little over 12 hours each way. On Memorial Day weekend we went to one in Raleigh, NC - about an hour longer drive and since we’ve stopped going to the one we used to attend in Dallas, was our longest trip this year. Coming up are some smaller, local conventions and events and then we’ll be in Detroit on Halloween weekend for my favorite convention.

  44. Do you have any stories that you’re currently writing that you’ve hit a block on?

    • Hi Katie,

Are you reading over my shoulder? LOL! Right now, CLAIM ME BEFORE I BREAK is in rewrites, which means it is not coming easily to me at all. It happens like that sometimes. Frustrating, but true.

  45. From any of your books, what has been one of your favorite scenes, or types of scenes, to write?

    • I like writing flirty dialogue, especially when characters first meet. The scene when Cassidy and David first meet at Serve? LOVED writing that one! It recreates that rush of first meeting someone, which I love, love, LOVE.

  46. if you could have three folks to dinner living, dead, real, and imaginary who would they be and why?

    • Such a hard one because it’s difficult to only pick three! I guess it also depends if I was going for a certain theme for dinner. Am I striving for intellectual curiosity? Am I going for the sexy? A combo? I heard that meeting one’s heroes is not always such a good idea sometimes.

Whole novels could be written on that question! But for now? I’ll choose:

      1. Bono 2. Gideon Cross 3. Elon Musk

Yeah, they’re all brilliant, hot men. Sue me ;-)

  47. 1. I’d think I’d like to live in the Caribbean somewhere.
    2. come over to her house in the middle of the night to kill a spider.
    3. not sure since I’m vanilla.

  48. What genres of books do you write ?

  49. Do prefer to read print or on an e-reader?

  50. If you could pick any place in the world to start over, where would you pick and why?
New Zealand or Australia. It’s look so cool- people , nature, quality of llife….

What is the craziest thing a friend has ever asked you to do?
    Usually crazy are my expertise.

If you could pick a kink for the next Serve novel, what would it be?
Mmm, I am not really into kink

  51. what is your Favorite part of being a Author/Writer?

    • Creating a whole world of characters and events just from my imagination - and hopefully hearing that world transported a reader into a happier place, even if just for a small snippet of time. That means everything to me.

  52. 1. I’d stay in Texas. It is already starting over for me since Ohio is where I really started and I really like Texas.
    2. I don’t think it’s crazy but it was hard…support her through an unexpected pregnancy at 16 when her parents through her out and pretty much everyone else turned their backs on her.
    3. No clue!

  53. How did you get involved with the Serve series? Did you chat with Katee and Tessa before you started writing Bind Me Before You Go?

    • Funny you should ask because I wrote a lil something-something about just that question! Here’s linky thing!

I did not get to talk to Katee (although we’re FB and Pininterest friends and she’s RAD) but I did talk with Tessa and she was so helpful! Pst! Entangled authors are really just as fabulous as you think they’d be. I got to meet a bunch of them in NYC recently.

      • Ha ha, the ‘linky thing’! You sound just like me. :D What an exciting email to get! I understand your response completely. Very curious about Japanese rope bondage now! And I don’t doubt it, I follow a number of the entangled authors on twitter or FB and they seem like a fun group. :)

  54. Have your job experiences ever found a way into your books? What was the worst job you ever had?

    • My job as a social worker definitely made it into this one! But the worst job I ever had? It usually wasn’t about the tasks I had to do, but having either a boss or a group of co-workers that sucked ass.

The best jobs I’ve ever had - outside of being an author - were always about being with people I liked. And the worst? About being stuck with Satan’s minions.
