Author Chris Cannon Interview and Amazon Gift Card Contest

Blackmail Boyfriend (Entangled Crush) by Chris Cannon BBB: Which superhero could defeat any other superhero?

CC: Thor

BBB: What drew you to writing YA?

CC: I love that in YA teens are still figuring out who they are, they can make amazing discoveries about themselves and their place in the world. They can also make mistakes and still have time to recover from them.

BBB: Would your main character win on the show Survivor by strength, cheating or not at all?

CC: She’d use her brain to figure out a way to survive.

BBB: If you were a survivor on a deserted island, what one person would you like to have with you?

CC: My shih tzu, Pete. He’s great company, he loves to play, and he always does something to make me smile.

BBB: Please tell us more about Blackmail Boyfriend and the storyline that drives it.

CC: When honor student, Haley Patterson hears that her long time crush, Bryce Colton is telling everyone they hooked up over the weekend she confronts him and learns the girl he actually hooked up with gave him the wrong name in an attempt to hide the fling from her on-again off-again boyfriend who happens to be a cage fighter. Haley blackmails Bryce into being her boyfriend to save her reputation and to show guys that despite her over-protective and intimidating big brothers, she is datable. Bryce can’t believe he’s being blackmailed by an honor student. The only reason he talked about his weekend hookup was to convince his ex he’d moved on. Instead of ending his girl problems he’s created more of them. Haley is cute and smart but she doesn’t smile and nod and agree with everything he says like the other girls he’s dated. He’ll fake date her to convince everyone that she doesn’t sleep around and to prove a guy can date her without being fed feet first through a woodchipper, as her brothers have threatened to do to him if he hurts their sister. Can something that starts out as fake turn into something real?

BBB: Is BBlackmail Boyfriend a stand-alone or part of a series? If it is a series? How many more books will there be?

CC: It’s a stand-alone, but it will be linked to another contemporary YA which takes place in the same setting.

BBB: What sets Blackmail Boyfriend apart from other books in the same genre?

CC: It’s a fast paced, funny read. There’s nothing heavy or dark or depressing. There is a good dose of teen angst, but my goal is to make you smile and laugh.

BBB: What types of characters can readers expect in your world?

CC: Smart, snarky characters who don’t go with the flow or try to blend in with the crowd.

BBB: How would you title your autobiography?

CC: Coffee addict

BBB: Where do you hide out when you get upset?

CC: On my couch with Pete the shih tzu,Tyson the sandwich-stealing German shepherd beagle, and Molly the ever-shedding yellow lab. Dogs have life figured out. Food is good, Napping in the sunshine is good.Playing is good. Affection/cuddling is good. If something annoys you, bark at it for a minute and then move on and focus on the good stuff again.

BBB: If someone asked you to eat three thousand gummy bears over the course of three months for $100.00, would you do it, or worry about the health risks or ask if another type of candy would be acceptable?

CC: If it’s not chocolate, I’m out.

BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2015?

CC: Book 3 in my shape-shifting dragon series, should be out toward the end of this year. I’m also working on another contemporary YA and a Sci Fi romance.

  1. Who are some of your favourite authors?

  2. Hi Chris and Congratulations! Who is your all-time favorite book character?

  3. Hello! I love Supernatural too. Do you have a favorite character?

  4. Thank you. All time favorite character is tough. I loved Hermione because I can relate to her in a bookish nerdgirl sort of way.

  5. Hi Chris!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, it’s great to have you here today.

My question for you is; where do you draw the line in YA books you write when it comes to sexual content? Some YA series I have read in the past, were shockers to me. BUT I have to be honest and say, I may have been engaging in a few experimental things at that age myself. LOL It’s always different when it is *your kid* hehehe.

  6. I have some exciting news. I Just learned that Blackmail Boyfriend came in at number 4 of the top ten selling books at Entangled this week.

    • CONGRATS Chris!!!! That’s amazeballs! Woot. So happy for you. Next week number one the following the world!! so cool. I love it when authors share news like this. Very excited for you.

  7. To answer your questions that are on the Giveaway Tools Widget.

    1. How do you like your morning caffeine: coffee, tea, soda

    COFFEE. COFFEE. COFFEE.

I like to say there’s “too much blood in my caffeine system” in the morning. What about you Chris? Do you like your coffee fancy from a coffee joint. Black, with cream and sugar?

    • I love coffee with a little milk or creamer when I’m at home. If I’m out and have a chance to buy a frappuccino or a fancy coffee with whipped cream then I’ll go for it.

      • Oh man if they had a sugar free version of frappucino’s I would love it. I remember the first year they came out with those chocolate orange ones and they had some kind of yummy sprinkle on them. Then the stopped making them. (bastages). GODS those were like crack.

I admit I use half and half and sugar free syrup in mine at home.

  8. Congratulations on the publication of Blackmail Boyfriend! It sounds like a fun book. Do you find it easier to write contemporary or paranormal YA? What was the most difficult character to write from any of your books?

    • I find paranormal easier because I’m able to make up the rules to the universe. For contemporary I have to do research if my characters are into things that I don’t know much about.

  9. 2. Do you have any pets?

Uhmmm *cough cough* to say we have pets is an understatement. LOL

We have FIVE dogs. all of them are small and under 20lbs (though that Kisses the doxon may be pushing her limit there lol). We have 3 Chi-Weenies (chihuahua wiener dog mix), 1 fat doxon and 1 toycup long haired Chihuahua named Kritter (aka Demon).

What about you? I know you have at least 2 dogs. Do you have any other pets Chris?

    • I bet your house is as furry as mine. LOL. Right now I’m trying to type as Tyson the german shepherd beagle tries to nudge the laptop off my lap so I’ll rub his tummy. Pete the shitzu is laying on my other side. Molly the yellow lab is laying on my feet.

      • yep, plenty of fuzz balls around. Even though everybody (husband included) is short haired. It’s weird how the fur multiplies into big grey blobs. And how quickly!

  10. 3. What’s your favorite type of cupcake?

One that doesn’t make my butt swell? *SNORT* I love carrot cake and lemon anything. So, those would be my fav flavors if I could eat them.

What’s your favorite flavor of cupcake Chris?

    • If you can develop a calorie free cupcake that would be my favorite. Otherwise, I love chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting.

      • Now, Okay you just *HAD* to bring chocolate and PB into this didn’t you. lol I would have that as my 3rd fav! Although I had a snicker doodle one once that was TDF!

        • Now that I know there are snickerdoodle cupcakes I must have one. I’ll be swinging by the cupcake shop tomorrow after work to see if they make them. If not, I’ll settle for one of the other fantastic flavors I’m sure they have because I’m flexible like that.

          • Reading about snickerdoodle cupcakes reminded me of the cinnamon roll cupcakes I make that are topped with coffee icing and cream cheese frosting! They are so delicious! Best cupcakes I think I’ve ever had and they are super easy to make.

  11. Author Questions

I enjoy tea in the morning.

I don’t have any pets at this time, but I am a dog lover.

My favorite cupcake is chocolate with chocolate frosting.

  12. My answers:

    1. Coffee, coffee, coffee!!!

    2. I don’t have any pets but my daughter has a Japanese Chin and I have thought about a dognapping but it would break both of their hearts to be separated. And, it could be a little tricky hiding Chloe… Chloe is such a sweet, loving dog and she looks at you so expectantly like now what…

    3. My favorite cupcake is chocolate with some kind of filling and buttercream icing but truthfully, I LOVE them all!

  13. Do you give out ARC of your books and if so, how do I get in on it?! I love the dragon series and can’t wait until the next one comes out! Also, am I the only one who is secretly hoping Jaxon becomes a real love interest?!

    • I can send out ebook ARC’s but I don’t have access to paperbacks. You are not the only one who hopes that Bryn and Jaxon get together. Of course Valmont would have to die for that to happen….mwah ha ha ha
(reposting this because I think I posted in the wrong place before. There is a learning curve to this stuff)

  14. I can send out ebook ARC’s but I don’t have access to paperbacks. You are not the only one who hopes that Bryn and Jaxon get together. Of course Valmont would have to die for that to happen….mwah ha ha ha

  15. Q: How do you like your morning caffeine: coffee, tea, soda.

A: Definitely Coke! (I’m from the south so everything is coke not soda!)

Q: Do you have any pets?

A: My absolutely amazing Great Pyrenees named Pumpkin. She’s the best dog ever!

Q: What’s your favorite type of cupcake?

A: Umm bought from somewhere: Cheesecake Factory Red Velvet Cupcake! And homemade I love lemon!

  16. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

  17. I like my morning coffee with soy milk and stevia.
    I have no pets.
I like an all chocolate cupcake.

  18. Chris! Loved the book. Who will the next story be about in this setting? I noticed you said there will be another book in the same setting. Thanks!

    Tara

    • I’m working on a story about a girl who kisses a guy her brother hates just because she’s mad at her brother. Then she ends up falling for him. Her brother swears the guy is just using her to get back at him.

  19. I read this book: Blackmail Boyfriend. It was terrific and a 5* read for everyone. No swearing, no nasty sex scenes. Just a terrific book and a great story! :0)

  20. I kinda don’t want you to answer this, but you mentioned you almost killed off a character in your next book. Who?? I’m dying to know and don’t want to know at the same time!!

    • In my Going Down In Flames series, Bryn has a knight named Valmont. Some people want
bryn to get together with Jaxon, which means something has to happen to Valmont.

  21. Hi Chris!

I have to say- I cannot imagine what a German Shepherd/Beagle mix looks like at all. How old are all your dogs?

I have a crazy schedule so my caffeine fix depends entirely on when I have to be up on that individual day- but it is pretty evenly split between coffee and soda.

We have 3 dogs too- A labrador/American bull mix(13), a beagle(13), and one who defies such simple conventions as breed- he is a proud mutt (8). We also have an axolotl named Roy.

I am pretty seasonal with my desserts- so right now it would be a lemon cake w/ either blueberry or strawberry filling.

  22. Raonaid Luckwell

If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give? A con to being a writer? A pro to being a writer?

    • Read Steven King’s book, On Writing. He gives great information about the craft of writing and it inspires you to never give up. Learn the rules of writing by reading articles online/craft books. THe rules that applied in high school english classes are not the same rules that apply to writing fiction.
One con to being a writer is it’s a solitary effort which is another reason why you need to join a local or online writing group so people will understand when you say that a character is making you crazy. A pro to being a writer is you can create your own world and share that world with other people.

  23. Raonaid Luckwell

1.How do you like your morning caffeine: coffee, tea, soda
    —- Dr. Pepper, enough said!
Surprisingly enough, coming from coffee drinkers (My mother and my grandparents on her side), I never developed a taste for the stuff. I like certain teas (green tea, sweet tea, Irish breakfast, English breakfast)

    2.Do you have any pets?
    —- I sure do!
I have three wiener dogs (aka Dachshunds) as Rachel knows. The oldest, and father to the younger two, is a short-haired, black and red toy named Warlock. He has a birthday next month. Then there is his daughter from the first batch, long haired black and red toy named Simi. A son from second or third, long-haired piebald miniature (he took after his momma in stature and haired) named Rock. He’s my shadow and puppy escort.
The hubby has a hedgehog named White Shadow. I refuse to touch it and get poked.
The latest addition is a bearded dragon – who is chock full of attitude and personality. We got him from hubby’s sister. The nephew refused to hold it and do anything with it. And it is becoming evident he prefers me over my husband and sons. We named him Loki after the God of Mischief (because oooh man is he full of it). My son or hubby can reach in and he runs from them or behaves like he wants to bite them. I can scoop him up without problem, which I show off to them.

3.What’s your favorite type of cupcake?
—— Is there a cheesecake cupcake? Anymore I am not a big fan of cake or the sugariness of the icing. I prefer to have cheesecake.

    • Do the dogs coexist peacefully with the lizard and the hedgehog?

      • Raonaid Luckwell

We do not let the doggies get too close to either…

Loki, gets peeved whenever I am holding him and the dogs jump to check him out. And when they use to jump to look into his aquarium, Loki use to try to bite them. LOL. As for the hedgehog, I told them “If he pricks you, hey its your own fault”

        • Hedgehogs looks so cute. Are their spines sharp or just stiff?

          • Raonaid Luckwell

They have cute faces, I’ll give them that. They are naturally sharp and stiff. Hubby said when you run your fingers across them you can tell how sharp they are. A hedgehog can determine how much the poke their handler, that much I do remember

          • Raonaid Luckwell

You can tell when a hedgehog is comfortable and relaxed in your hand. They don’t try to poke you. But you spook or scare them they ball up and that’s when the spikes hurt

      • Raonaid Luckwell

And a bearded dragon is the closest I will ever come to having an actual dragon - grins, is a dragon lover -

  24. Do you have a fave stand-alone novel?

    • I have to think about that. I normally go for series because I don’t want the story to end so quickly. I actually can’t think of the last standalone book I read. That’s weird. I never realized that about myself.

  25. I have noticed that many authors publish serials with less than fifty pages and ask readers to buy these for prices that range anywhere from .99 cents to about $2.99 or more. Personally, I don’t like this practice. What is your view on this?

    • When I buy a book I want at least 60.000 words. If an author is publishing something super short, they should make sure the reader knows exactly what they are purchasing.

  26. Can you tell us a little about the sci-fi romance you are working on?

    • In the future, people with psychic powers are recruited/kidnapped to work as spies. A psychic woman is recruited by a guy who is sure his company is helping the Psi’s. She causes trouble for him so that he is demoted. He’s the reason she’s stuck training for a job she doesn’t want. Together, they figure out that nothing is as it seems and they have to work together to survive. It’s kind of like La Femme Nikita meets the Matrix.

  27. Hi. Congratulations on your new release. What is your favorite book or series that you have written so far and why????

    • The Going Down In Flames series consists of 2 books so far but I plan to write several more. Blackmail Boyfriend was my third book published. I love all three of them. The first dragon book might edge out the other two just a bit since it took 8 years to find a publisher who was interested in acquiring it. Selling it to Entangled Publishing and then watching my dream of publication become a reality was an amazing first experience.

  28. Author questions:
My morning drink is water. I used to be able to down a few shots of espresso and be fine, but years ago caffeine, especially in coffee form, started making me feel wonky. I’m old.
I have 3 cats. One is almost all black, one is black with a white belly/chest, and the oldest is grey and white. All that means is that whatever shade of clothing I’m wearing, you can tell I have cats.
I don’t think I have a favorite cupcake. But if someone makes a chocolate one with a caramel center, that would be worth seeking out.

    • No coffee? I shudder at the thought. I actually didn’t start drinking coffee until I hit thirty. I’ve been addicted ever since.
I have blond, black, and various shades of brown dog fur on my clothes at most times. Thank goodness for those sticky rollers. I keep one in my desk at work so I can make myself presentable.

  29. Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

    2.Do you have any pets?

Not me - my kids but it feel the same - Chinese hamster and 2 Cockatiels

3.What’s your favorite type of cupcake?

    Banannuts

I like making chocolate stout cupcakes with Rose Levy Beranbaum’s Midnight Ganache or cream cheese frosting on top.

  33. All this talk about cupcakes is making me hungry. I don’t have any cupcakes in the house at the moment. I may have to raid the freezer for ice cream.

  41. How do you decide if a book is going to be a stand alone or part of a series?

    • With the Going Down In Flames series, I knew the story would span several years which meant several books. With Blackmail Boyfriend I knew the books would be linked by location, but not be a continuation of the same story line if that makes sense.

    3. What’s your favorite type of cupcake?

    Chocolate with Chocolate frosting

  46. who is your favorite author?

  47. Have you ever been discouraged? How did you go through it?

    • It took 8 years to find someone willing to publish my first book. Agents kept telling me they liked it, but they couldn’t sell funny in New York. One agent told me to go directly to a small publisher. That was the best piece of advice because it worked. During all the frustration I just kept thinking if I gave up it would never happen, but if I kept going it might happen.

  48. Wheres your favorite place to write?

  49. Will any of the secondary characters be getting a story of their own?

  50. What is your favorite food?

  51. If you could have your dream holiday what would it be and where would you go.

I don’t have any morning caffeine,
We’ve got three dogs a 17yo jack russell/foxy cross, a rising 4yo cocker spaniel who I do agility with and just last month I was given a 19month old german shepherd as a rehome. He is very unsocialised and hasn’t been taught much so has a big learning curve going on at the moment.

    • Sedona, Arizona is beautiful. I’d love to have a writing retreat there with a great view.
I’m sure the new dog will get with the program. He’s young enough to learn new tricks. My surly shih tzu was four when we got him, and he isn’t interested in changing his ways.

    Yes, I have a cat.

Chocolate with white frosting. Yum! :-)

  54. Tell us 5 things we may not know about your writing life…

    • I’m a panster, meaning I start out with an inciting incident, a few major plot points, and a possible ending. Then I just sit down and see what happens.

One time I outlined a story because I thought that might be a better way to go. Then I couldn’t write it because I knew how it ended.

I have typed through 4 silicone keyboard covers.

I sometimes find myself making faces while I type which match the expressions of the characters.

I cannot write if the Simpson’s are on because Homer Simpson’s voice in the only tv voice I can’t ignore. It pierces through my concentration and annoys the crap out of me. When I’m not writing, I like the show, but if I’m writing, it can’t be on in the house.

  71. To answer your question about my favorite cupcake flavor, it would have to be red velvet cupcake.

  72. As an established writer do you still do research for your books?

    • I love that you think of me as established. Blackmail Boyfriend is my third book, and I still feel like a newby with a lot to learn. As for the research, I do research random facts about items or hobbies I mention in my books to make sure the descriptions or the way the characters use the items are accurate.

  73. To answer your question about if I have a pet, the answer is that I used to have a dog as a pet named sugar but unfortunately she passed away over a decade ago. Even though it has been a long time ago, I still love and think of her to this day and I miss her every day.

    • Pets are family. I still cry over dogs I have loved who have gone to the light no matter how many years have passed. I think when we die, all our pets are waiting for us on the other side. And where they wait, the grass is made of Beggin Strips and people throw frisbees and tennis balls upon request.
