About Avery Flynn
Author Bio:
Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip. Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

Bitten by Books
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Hey ya Lisa! The hardest part has to be the actual sitting down and writing. I know that sounds dumb, but the internet is such a wonderfully distracting place!
Who are some of your favourite authors?
I have to go with my besties, Robin Covington and Kimberly Kincaid but I am also on a huge Kate Meader kick, Nalini Singh kick and Katee Roberts kick. Oh nom, nom, nom about all those delicious books!
Q. Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation? A. I would want to go to Ireland.
Q. When was the last time you dodged temptation? A. I don’t think I have ever dodged temptation.
Q. What is your most hated romance trope? A. The love triangle.
Hello again
OK, in list form because that’s how I roll:
1. Vacation? I’ve always wanted to do a cruise around the world. That would be awesome. I did a semester in Ireland in college and it was amazing. You should go!
2. Ha! I’m right there with you as the cake sitting in front of me would attest.
3. Really?!? Oh I love a good love triangle, but they do have to end eventually. *cough* team babe *cough*
What was your favorite part about writing the book and is there a character you had the most fun with?
Another Lisa! My favorite scene in Dodging Temptation was the end. Seriously, I giggled my way through the whole thing. As for a character that I had fun with, it’s kinda hard not to have fun with a hippie, hippie mom who has decided the universe wants her sons to marry STAT.
Q. Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation? A.somewhere warm- Tahiti
Q. When was the last time you dodged temptation? A. not a good dodger-I married him!
Q. What is your most hated romance trope? A.the unknown love child
Oh, excellent choice! 2. You crack me up. Lucky fella.
3. I’m kinda with you there, but it can be well done.
Whats been the biggest challenge for you becoming an author?
There’s so much to learn and to understand, not just in the how to write a book way but also in the how to get published way. It’s exhausting!
Galapagos Islands and Great Barrier Reef and Hawaii
I want to go on vacay with you!
can’t remember last time…. suffered over 100 strokes last year and affected some memory
Wow! Congrats on making it through. Keep rocking it!
I’m trying thanks… been a long road
What do you like to do for exercise?
*Like* to do? Um … actually I do like strength training. Running is the devil.
What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
Having a bright new shiny idea.
Where do you start when building a character? Is it the personality or some other aspect?
1. I’d love to do a lux resort in New Zealand.
2. I don’t think I’ve ever given in to tempation.
3. I can’t stand the “all of a sudden I’m into S&M.”
Usually the personality comes to me first. But sometimes, like with Dodging Temptation’s heroine Harper, it’s a situation that hits me first. I really wanted to explore what it would be like to be a cheating politician’s wife who goes off on him at a live press conference. What in the world do you do next?
Hi Avery and Congratulations! Who is your all-time favorite book character?
All time favorite? Oh that’s hard but I’m going to go with Scarlett O’Hara. She is not nice. She is not lovable. She’s a total bitch. But she’s a surviver and she learns and adapts. I like that.
Great choice, Avery! I agree with your reasons~you have to learn and adapt in order to survive and sometimes you just have to be a bitch about it!
Amen!
I like the way you think, Avery!
Do you hand write or do you use a pc?
I’m a mac girl all the way! I can’t imagine writing by hand. The number of lines scratched out per page would be such a bummer.
Hello! What writers have influenced you?
Every author influences me to some degree, but some of my favorites are Lori Foster, Dakota Cassidy and Jaci Burton.
1. Yellowstone
2. I did not burn all of my ex’s deeds and the rest of our important papers that we aquired.in our 25 year mariage.
3. A love triangle.
Thank God on No. 2! That would have been awful!
Hi, Avery!
Welcome to Bitten by Books. Congratulations on your new release.
It is fantastic to have you with us today.
My question for you is; do you have a favorite book or series that you have written so far????
If so, which is it and why???
Thank you!! My favorite series that I’ve written? It’s always the one I’m working on now. I’m telling you, working on a book is like having a shiny new toy!
Congratulations on the release of Dodging Temptation! How do you select the locations for your books? Do you visit these locations or just research them?
I grew up in Western Nebraska so Wyoming s familiar territory to me. Some of the places I write about I know and some (like Harbor City in my Killer Style series) are totally made up in my head. As for picking locations, I tend to go with what fits the story best.
Author questions
A luxury resort vacation to any beautiful tropical island would be my choice.
I am not very good at dodging temptation - especially if it’s chocolate!
My least favorite romance trope is an unknown love child.
Yes. Tropics FTW!
Has writing, always been a passion for you?
I’ve never wanted to be anything else but a writer in some form or another. I was a newspaper reporter for 10 years before starting to write fiction.
Hi Avery!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, thank you so much for being with us today. Sorry I am a bit late to the party. I have a minor concussion so am having trouble focusing on one thing at a time. LOL
My question for your is; what books on writing (besides the chicago manual of style and a dictionary) do you recommend for new authors? Not just for books but maybe for writing articles too.
Ouch on the concussion. I think we need to work on your dodging skills.
I’d recommend Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. Also, Stephen King’s On Writing is great!
Oh I think I may have Elements of Style of course On Writing is a staple. What about an oddball gem that you have found?
Janet Evanovich has a cool book about her writing process. It’s pretty interesting. Honestly, my favorite craft experience has been taking Cherry Adair’s course. Totally amazing! She has craft books you can get off her website also.
Cherry is SUPER nice! That’s a great tip. Thanks Avery.
To answer your questions that are on the Giveaway tools widget.
1. Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation?
Man, this is hard. I would love to go back to Greece and the Mediterranean. Maybe the Bahamas but that seems so *over done*. Some of the places that they dump folks off on that show Survivor look amazing too. As long as there are cabin boys to take care of all the things I might need. LOL
What about you Avery? Where would you go?
I’m going with you wherever the cabin boys are.
I think that is an excellent plan. LOL
2. When was the last time you dodged temptation?
I would say EVERY time I drive by the bead/craft store and don’t go in, I dodge temptation. I am absolutely HOOKED on beads and making jewelry!
What about you Avery? When was the last time you dodged temptation?
Oh you crafty people! I’m so jealous and glad I can’t craft all at the same time.
I am horrible at dodging temptation. I’m always smack dab in the middle of it.
What’s your latest temptation you couldn’t avoid Avery? hahaha come on you can tell us. your secrets are safe with us. lol
Well I did have cake for lunch two days in a row. Like I said, temptation and I are best friends.
OMG what’s your favorite type of cake? Mine is Carrot and German Chocolate…..I kind of like white cake with raspberry filling. Not that I eat much cake these days. LOL
3. What is your most hated romance trope?
Well, I really don’t like the love triangle a lot. I don’t hate it. I can’t think of any (goes and googles romance tropes)….
Okay here are a few I didn’t really think of as tropes but I think the count?
Anything non-consensual.
When characters may or may not be aware of how bad their relationship really is and it takes the entire book to work it out (or it doesn’t resolve)
The love martyr
What about you Avery which do you hate?
Wait. What is the love martyr trope? Must know! And my most unfavorite is the secret baby. I hate it.
When only one of the partners suffers. ALL.THE.TIME
ohh yeah the secret baby sucks.
Oh. I’m not much of an angsty reader.
LOL I am not either actually. But when I read that trope yesterday it made me *feel* all the *feels* lol
The most luxurious vacation for me,would be for me to go to my own island for a week and to have my own chef and maid for me,to take care of everything!
Oh I want to come on that one with you Tami!
Who is your favorite Muppet and why?
Miss Piggy all the way because she seriously kicks ass and goes after whatever she wants. My kinda gal!
I’d love to go to the Scottish highlands, or someplace in Montreal or Quebec City!
I decided to eat something healthier than a scone for breakfast the other day (to be fair, I’d scarfed up my share of ‘em that week and likely will again soon).
I’ve never been crazy about sexual tension expressed through hostility…
Let’s go to the highlands together! It could be the best romance book nerd field trip ever!
Do you have a favorite stand-alone novel?
I do but it’s non-fiction. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is — hands down — one of my favorite books of all time.
Are you for different flavors of oreos (golden, berry, pumpkin, etc) or are you an oreo purist?
There are only two kinds of Oreos 1. original 2. double stuffed. The others are all abominations!!! (If only you could hear the fire and brimstone in my voice. *grin*)
Hi Avery!
When writing what is something you have to do? Do you have to have it quiet or have music on? Something you drink every time you write?
I usually like the quiet, but when I get really into a scene but the words aren’t coming out right, I’ll turn on the tunes to help things along.
Luxury vacation- Actually a luxury vacation to just about anywhere would be great. But I’ve always wanted to see Rome.
Last temptation dodged- Not having yet another glass of wine.
Romance trope- Helpless ladies that constantly need a dude to save them.
God save us all from weak-willed, wimpy heroines. UGH!
Do you have any dogs/cats/critters?
I have two totally spoiled lab mutts: Pepper and Gravy. You can see a picture of them at USA Today’s Happy Ever After (http://happyeverafter.usatoday.com/2015/09/14/avery-flynn-interview-dodging-temptation/) - and if you follow me on social media you see pics of them all the time.
love the pics — so adorable — my abby is a mixed corgi and she is totally spoiled too
Corgis are way too cute!
1. Hawaii
2. left the chocolate in my desk drawer a whole day!
3. love triangles
You went a whole day without eating the chocolate? You are impressive!
it was hard LOL
This story sounds so interesting.
Have you had writers’s block so bad that you thought maybe you should find a different passion?
Not writers block. I do get stuck in stories sometimes but usually that just means I need to go back and figure out where I made a left turn when I should have gone right.
Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation?
I want to go to Ireland so bad, its not even funny. Hubs and I plan on going there when the boy is off on his own. Well a legal adult at least! 4 more years!
When was the last time you dodged temptation?
I am resisting the temptation to physically hurt my husband, he’s been playing the Play Station all day. I do mean all day. Since 4 am. A new addition came out for one of his games so it’s a new toy.
What is your most hated romance trope?
May/December romance.. I wouldn’t say hate exactly, just not a favorite at all.
Good Lord! How have his thumbs not fallen off yet? Seriously!
I honestly don’t know.. Obsession doesn’t even begin to cover how he feels about this game.
I’d love to go to Hawaii for vacation.
I’m with you!
Are there any other genres you would have an interest in writing ?
True crime would be cool.
Congrats on your new release, Avery! How do you ever come up with your ideas? Do they relate to your real life family and friends?
Hey Linda! xoxo My ideas come from all over the place. Sometimes things just plow right into me out of the blue and other times I see something and it gets an idea rolling in my head.
I loved your Sweet Salvation Brewery series!
xoxo
Do you like sports?
I like watching them but playing them? No. Total uncoordinated goof here.
Bali
never
triangles
Bali would be awesome!
Do you prefer to read the book first or see the movie first?
Either work for me, but there’s only ever been one movie that’s been better than the book: The Color Purple.
From any of your books, what has been one of your favorite scenes, or types of scenes, to write?
I love writing the banter between the two leads, it’s always so much fun. Also the interaction between family members, which gets me every time.
What types and genres of books do you like to write ?
I write contemporary romance, romantic suspense and some paranormal, which is all fun. It’s nice to be able to genre hop because it keeps my creativity going.
If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give? One PRO to becoming an author? One CON to becoming an author?
As far as advice, I’d say get your butt in the chair and write until you finish the book. One pro to being an author is that the job description is ‘make shit up’ and you can’t beat that. One con to being an author … hmmmmm …. I’d go with that it can be a baffling experience sometimes in terms of connecting a book with its audience.
To answer your giveaway questions:
Hawaii!
Tonight, when I decided not to have that extra cookie.
A tie between the secret baby plot and love triangles.
Don’t worry, I’ll eat that cookie for you.
Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation?
— There are a lot of places I would love to vacation: Ireland, Scotland, Japan, even New Orlean
When was the last time you dodged temptation?
—- Actually, a lot… Finances being so tight helps in the dodging the temptations that present itself: books, anime, candle scents, etc.
What is your most hated romance trope?
— Mm, one of them is love triangle. I think that is why I’m not too enthused with Urban Fantasy where the lead female character goes from this man to the next. I had that dampen my enjoyment with a series. And usually the one I root for is not the person that gets chosen.
Surprise baby
Yes on the urban fantasy! The one I want never gets picked either. GAH!
big age difference…may/December is most hated
You know, I don’t think I’ve read many of those.
I am Christina G. and I live in the USA.
Hey Christina!
Who is your least favorite character that you have written good or bad?
Wow. Um. … I don’t know that I have a least favorite character I’ve ever written. Even the bad guys have something that makes their actions understandable (at least to them).
Hi,
I was wondering if you ever tried writing with a partner?
I love seeing Pepper and Gravy’s antics btw! =D
Hey Karen! I’m not sure if I would work well with a partner. I’m kind of — OK, am really — a pain in the ass. :0
What was your favourite book that you read as a child?
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. I’m in the DC area and she was at the National Book Fair a few years ago. I stood in line with my daughter to get her copy signed. What a day! Total fan girl moment.
Drugs? Ha! Kidding! I have total workaholic tendencies that go hand in hand with my procrastination tendencies. OK, not hand in hand. They fight each other like .. oh squirrel!
where the hell do you find the time for everything…was with you at a chat just last night too…
OK, I have no idea what I did but I answered your question in the comment above. It’s like I knew you were going to ask it.
Hi
I carry my kindle everywhere with me in my handbag so I can whip it out and read whenever paused for a moment. Do you find yourself reading in odd places?
Yes! I never thought I’d read on my phone and then I got stuck at the dentist. Thank God for the Kindle sync function!
I also didn’t think I would use my phone but when my kindle died and before I got the replacement I did find myself using the phone. So pleased to get my kindle back though
Wheres your favorite place to write?
I love my office - the nerd den - it has all of my dorky favorite things.
who is your favorite author?
I don’t have an absolute favorite, but there are many on my auto buy list. The latest to join that club is Elle Kennedy. She has an amazing action/adventure romance series (the midnight series) that I LOVE!
What’s your favourite genre to read?
Romance! It has always been my stress relief.
Do you have any current favorite shows or books?
The Fab Mr. Flynn and I are binge watching Hannibal. I do love a twisted villain.
I just finished watching Hannibal last month
It was awesome and I really hope someone picks up the show so it’ll continue.
1. Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation? Hawaii or the UK probably or maybe Disney where they have Epcot so i can travel the world in a day lol
Q. When was the last time you dodged temptation? when i went to a booksale that a library i work at was having and didn’t buy a thing
my wallet thanked me afterwards
Q. What is your most hated romance trope? bad boy meets overly sweet virgin
You made it out of a bookseller without a book? You are made of stern stuff!
what’s you favorite vacation spot. Trying to find some place new to go.
I love going to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It’s so laid back.
What book could you read over and over again?
Gone With the Wind. I love Rhett. He’s bad in the best ways.
Where would you want to go on a luxury resort vacation?
Tropical island
When was the last time you dodged temptation?
Well…. long time ago…
What is your most hated romance trope?
Love triangles, overly sweet virgins, gasps….
Yep the super sweet virgins do me in too.
Congrats on the new book!! Do you have anyone in mind if you were to cast an actor and actress for Dodging Temptation?
1) A mountain resort in the Swiss Alps would be so much fun for a luxury vacation.
2) Last time I dodged temptation was when I had one scoop of ice cream even though I would really kill for two!
3) My least favorite trope is the secret baby. Ugh, just not a fan of that!
Dodge is definitely Jesse Williams in my head. Oh he is delish!
What is your favorite Luxury Resort and why?
I got to stay at the Bellagio once. Best hotel bed ever!
How do you decide on a book title? Does it come before, during, or after writing the book? Thanks
I usually know the title right away, but sometimes it changes as I write and inspiration strikes.
1. anywhere far away from my home.
2. cake at a wedding shower day before yesterday. cake 1 me 0
3. secret baby or the one where she falls in love with the older brother
Cake for the win! It always bests me too!
What is you favorite part of being a author?
That moment when you get totally lost in a story. It’s my favorite thing about being a reader too.
If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing?
Is cake tester a job? That’s totally the one I’d want.
I’d love to go to a luxury resort in Hawaii.
Last time I dodged temptation was only eating two chocolate chip cookies and leaving another two still in the package for next time.
I hate reading about secret babies.
Blech. Secret babies.
Who would be your dream casting if Dodging Temptation was made into a movie?
Jesse Williams for Dodge for sure. Nom. Nom. Nom.
1. One of the tropical Islands up the North of Australia would be amazing!
2. I think my chocolate stash surviving another day is about as good as I get with dodging temptation.
3. Probably secret baby.
Oh, I so want to go to Australia!
What was the most recent book that you absolutely loved?
To answer your author questions:
1) I would want to visit Ireland and England.
2) I cannot recall having to dodge temptation.
3) I would have say that my most hated romantic trope is a love triangle.
