Author A.S. Fenichel Interview and $50.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Deception by A.S. Fenichel BBB: What was the funniest thing you ever said while on a sugar rush?

ASF: I love my sugar, so I probably say stupid things all the time.

BBB: Would your main character win on the show Survivor by strength, cheating or not at all?

ASF: She would crush them with strength but she’s not opposed to cheating. Losing is not in her nature.

BBB: Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards, or your slippers on, and when realizing it, just said screw it?

ASF: Not yet, but there’s still time. :)

BBB: Do you go out of your way to kill bugs? Are there any that make you screech and hide?

ASF: In or on the house yes, but not outside. I do not like spiders. Have you ever looked at them close? Totally evil looking. Eek! I’m also terrified of bees and wasps. I used to run and scream, but that was undignified so now I stand like a statue and scrunch up my face. Far better. LOL

BBB: Please tell us more about Deception and the storyline that drives it.

ASF: Deception is part of the Demon Hunters series, an epic battle of good vs. evil. Demons have invaded Regency England and Scotland and a Company of hunters battle to keep humanity safe.

The heroine, Lillian is a formidable demon hunter who rebels against men who try to impede her goals. She comes from nothing and everything she has is because she’s a demon hunter. When she suspects deception within the hunter company, she goes on a quest to root it out.

Dorian, a nobleman turned demon hunter, is assigned to keep an eye on her and stop her if she goes too far. He’s been infatuated with the fiery redhead for years and finds it impossible to remain impartial.

Together they discover lies that rock the foundation of everything they believe in and fight for.

BBB: How many more books will there be in the Demon Hunting series?

ASF: If all goes well, the series will be nine books.

BBB: What sets the Demon Hunters series apart from other books in the same genre?

ASF: The Demon Hunters is paranormal historical romance where often the heroine is as formidable as the hero. I write strong women in a time when women were little more than property. I also love men who are not threatened by a woman who can hold her own. In fact, my heroes find strong women quite stimulating. The paranormal setting gives me the ability to step outside the box and really have some fun with history.

I love Regency Romance and read it all the time but there are constraints within the genre. I’m a huge paranormal geek as well. Writing the Demon Hunters is the most fun ever.

BBB: What types of characters / creatures can readers expect in your world?

ASF: Besides the totally awesome humans with mad fighting skills, there are several types of demons. In Deception you’ll find Trebox, human sized creeps with pointed teeth and bad attitudes. Pravus are small hairy demons with poison fangs. Malleus demon are not too bright, covered in slime and stand eight or nine feet tall. Plenty more where they came from and of course, the Demon Master.

BBB: What does your protagonist think about you? Would he or she want to hang out with you, the author, his creator.

ASF: Lillian would think I need her protection and she’s probably right.

BBB: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve Googled?

ASF: Recently? I googled “queen of the night” Don’t ask…

BBB: What are the 5 books your HERO loves best!

ASF: Dorian is very analytical. He’d read, bulfinch’s mythology. He’d have read books on all the great civilizations, Greece, Rome, Egypt. He’s also a soldier and would relish King Lear and perhaps Twelfth Night for a bit of humor. I like to think he would also have enjoyed Miss Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. After all, he’s a romantic at heart.

BBB: What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2015?

ASF: Book three of the Demon Hunters, Betrayal will be out in December. I can’t wait for you to read Reece’s story. I received a lot of mail from readers unhappy that Lillian didn’t end up with Reece, but once you read Deception and Betrayal, you’ll see it couldn’t be any other way.

I released the End of Days Trilogy. These three novellas are fast paced, post apocalyptic and very steamy. They were my first published work and I’m happy to be able to bring them to readers in one volume at a special price.

I have several other projects coming up. Check out my website for more information.

  1. Who are some of your favourite authors?

    • Hi Minna, I love Eloisa James, Karen Marie Monning, Judith McNaught, Sandra Brown, Kit Rocha, and Karla Doyle for some spice. There are many more, but that could take all day.

  2. Hey, A.S.! What author out there, dead or alive, do you aspire to be like. Not just your writing, necessarily. ;)

    • Hmm… good one, Jo, I love Jane Austen of course. Beautiful writer and a lady. Of course I have a terrible potty mouth, so I would likely fail at being like her.

  3. Where did you find your inspiration for your demons and creatures?

    • Hi Nancy, I thought of what scares me most and turned them loose. You may not believe this, but I can’t watch horror at all. If I watch anything too violent, I have terrible nightmares. My own imagination is scary enough.

  4. When you start writing, do you already have an ending in mind, or do you just let the narrative go where it takes you?

    • Hi Lisa, It’s nice to have an ending in mind, but these are sometimes not readily on hand. LOL. I go in with a plan and sometimes it works out. Sometimes the characters do things I don’t expect making my original ending impossible. I’m always hopeful that when I reach the story climax, I’ll know how it will end. Most of the time this is the case.

  5. Hey A.S.!

Thank you so much for being here on the Bitten by Books blog today. It’s great to have you.

Would you like us to call you A. S. or do you have another nickname you prefer? :)

My question for you is; what do you LOVE to do for fun besides reading or writing?

    • Hi Rachel, I’m thrilled to be here. Andie or Andrea is fine. If you had ever hear someone call me “A.S.” from across a crowded room, you’d understand why I should have thought that one through before started writing. ;)

I love to cook. My husband and I cook together. We even went to a cooking school for part of our honeymoon in Italy. I’m obsessed with my dog and cat and spend a lot of time with them. I have a vegetable garden that drives me mad most of the time. We love to travel and are planning a trip to Spain in the spring.

      • LOL I guess A.S. is better than Ass. LOL *snicker*

Andie it is. I like that name. :)
What! Cooking school, you are my heroine now. I loved Italy when I was there. Would love to visit there again too. We have talked about moving there a lot.

What kind of dog and cat do you have and their names? We have FIVE dogs!

        • I’ve been to Italy 3 times. Love it. It was the first trip for my husband. Okay, now you’re going to think I’m a nut, but both the cat and the dog are named Molly. It’s not my fault. I swear it’s not. The cat was dumped on our front lawn as a itty bitty kitten. We named her Molly. She’s a tortoiseshell calico and she’s 8 years old now. The dog was a neighborhood dog that a “neighbor” was taking care of. They moved away and left the dog. I’m told this is not the first time this poor sweet baby was abandoned. She’s a little black mutt and the vet thinks she’s about 13. She’s been with us for just over a year and I’m completely in love. She already had the name Molly and since she answers to it, I couldn’t see changing her name. The cat only comes when she wants to anyway. We call them Molly Cat and Molly Dog.

  6. 1. Alpha
    2. MacGyver :)
    3. The thinker kick butt heroine.

Who/what inspired you to become a PNR writer?

    Thank you and best wishes.

    • Hi Viki, My dad loved MacGyver. LOL.

I have always loved Paranormal and SciFi. I’m a huge Star Trek fan. I love an epic story like Lord of the Rings. And Romance is in my soul. Sound corny, but I can’t imagine writing a book that didn’t have romance and end with happily ever after.

  7. To answer your questions that are on the Contest Widget:

    1. Do you like your heroes alpha or sensitive?

Hmm… I like a healthy blend. I don’t want somebody who I might walk all over because they are overly EMO. lol But somebody who is my equal and can match my strong personality and compliment. Strong silent types. But know when I need to be held and pampered. That being said, this could change tomorrow. LOL

What about you A.S? how do you like your heroes?

    • I like strong hero’s who have a good head on their shoulders and think about the people around them. I hate selfish hero’s.

      • Yea selfish heroes are agitating. I can’t think of any off the top of my head that I have read about or seen on TV. Can you think of any? Now I am obsessing about who is a selfish hero. lol

        • Jude Deveraux’s The Velvet Promise. Gavin made me nuts. I’ll try to think of some others. This is the only one that comes to mind at the moment. :D

  8. 2. If you were trapped in a foxhole, who would you want in there to get you out?

Well, again this depends on what kind of Foxhole! hahaha

I would want my husband and my Cousin Steve.

Who would you want with you if you were trapped in a foxhole A.S.?

    • My husband for sure. Dave is one of those MacGyver types. Give him a toothpick, two thumbtacks and a boot and he’ll figure a way out of any situation. ;)

      • LOL awesome that’s how my cousin Steve is. He’s always coming up with inventions or ideas for them. He sure can crochet a mean hammock too. LOL

  9. 3. If you were a character in a romance novel, what kind of hero/heroine would you be?

I am on the fence today about everything. LOL Again it depends on my mood. Today’s mood indicates I would prefer to be a behind the scenes heroine, making things happen without others knowing it is me.

What about you A. S. what kind of heroine would you be?

    • I like the idea of the behind the scenes heroine, but if I’m honest, I’m a balls to the wall, in your face, doing what need to be done kind of gal. My hero has got to be able to keep up.

  10. Raonaid Luckwell

If you could only give ONE piece of advice to newbie authors and writers, what advice do you think is the most important one to give?

Give one CON to being a writer? One Pro?

    • Hi Raonaid, Good question. My advice is, learn your craft.

By this I mean, take courses, get better, listen to the advice of other authors and editors. You don’t know everything. You will never know everything. I’m not saying blindly follow, but really think about why people criticize your work. They may not have the right solution, but if they plucked that item out of your writing, then there must be something wrong. Writing is a journey and one that never ends. I hope to be improving with each and every book I write. If that’s not in a writer’s mind, they should consider a different occupation.

CON - Writing can be very isolating. (find a group of writer friends)
PRO - It’s the ultimate expression of good and evil, love and hate. You get to live inside your imagination everyday.

  11. Hi Andi and Congratulations! What’s one of your favorite meals to cook?

    Answers to your questions:

    1. A mix of alpha and sensitive.

    2. My husband who is not only strong but also innovative.

    3. I would want to be strong and independent and a little quirky.

    • Thank you, Betty. We love Italian food. I love to make a simple pasta dish, with homemade marinara and I gook the penne right in the sauce. I like to serve a salad with strawberries and balsamic dressing with it. Super simple, perfect for a weeknight and delish.

      • Thank you, Andi. The penne cooked in the sauce sounds really good and more flavorful~I’ll have to try that. And you can’t go wrong with strawberries! Although, I thought there would be a chocolate dessert:) I’m a chocoholic, too!

        • My husband makes Chocolate ravioli that is to die for. OMG! I want that now!!! Fried little pockets of love.

If you try the pasta, just make the sauce (or use jarred.) put the penne in and cover with water. Leave it uncovered to cook. Stir from time to time. The water will cook off by the time the penne is ready. If not, just add a little more water. The pasta comes out very flavorful this way.

          • I’ve never had chocolate ravioli but I know I would LOVE it! I wouldn’t object if you husband sent me a care package!
That is such an interesting way to cook the penne~~I have to remember this! Thank you so much for sharing!

  12. Raonaid Luckwell

Do you like your heroes alpha or sensitive?
    — I really like the heroes I read to have a sensitive side… sometimes when they behave too alpha, they come across too cold and emotionless. Perhaps, I would rather the hero to be empathic, that he can sense or read another’s emotion and behave accordingly.

If you were trapped in a foxhole, who would you want in there to get you out?
—- Can I say “My weenie dogs”? Those little doggies have been bred to burrow and dig. And having three, I can attest to their ability to dig. They do NOT give up and just go.

If you were a character in a romance novel, what kind of hero/heroine would you be?
    — I would love to say the “kick ass, snark-mouthed” kind. However, realistically, I would be that heroine plagued with worries and self doubt. I can say that I would be the stubborn kind when it came to something I feel so strongly for.

  13. Congratulations on the release of your new book! Deception sounds exciting. Who is your favorite character in the Demon Hunters series? Was that character easy or difficult to write?

    • Wow, Bonnie. That is such a tough question. I’ll tell you what I tell my three nieces when they ask me which one is my favorite. “The one that is closest to me at that moment.” I know, I know, it’s a cheap answer, but it’s true. I love the one I’m with the most. When I was writing Deception, Lilly was my girl. Right now I’m finishing up book 4 of the Demon hunters and I’m in love with Serena and Tad.

They are each difficult at time depending on my mood. Dorian was very hard for me to write, maybe because he’s a lot like me. He’s always in his head, working out details and thinking about how things effect everyone around him. That said, I really like him, so that’s nice. He’s perfect for Lilly.

Belinda from Ascension was probably the easiest to write. I understood her and her motives from the very beginning. She was my inspiration for the series and her point of view flowed very well.

  14. Hi Andie,
What is your favorite part of writing? Making characters & your own world, forming the story plots, creating all the little details that make it uniquely yours, etc?

    • Hi Chrysti, Another tough question. I love world building. I love creating three dimensional characters, including the secondary ones. I adore falling in love with each and every one of the people I create.

BUT… I think the best part of writing is that moment when a story comes to me. It might happen in a dream or listening to a song on the radio. It might jump at me from out of nowhere. There is nothing like finding that tiny essence of a plot and letting it germinate in my brain until it’s a full fledge story ready for writing.

  15. Hello. I loved Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux as well. Do you have any other favorites by this author? I am currently reading her new book Ever After.

    • Hi Susan,
Long, long ago, Jude wrote the Velvet series. If you have not read that you most definitely should. I loved the last one, Velvet Anger the most. Another great one was Remembrance. This one has paranormal elements and is one of my favorite. Just thinking about the ending makes me tear up. I haven’t read her new book yet.

  16. What are you currently reading? Do you ever read multiple books at a time? What is your favorite genre to read?

    • Hi Karyn, I’m reading Cooking Up Love by Gemma Brocato. Sometimes I’ll read more than one book at a time if they are very different. Historical is my favorite but I do love Urban Fantasy too.

  17. Hi, Andie! Great to see you here on BBB. Rachel is THE BOMB as hostess. Anyway, I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS on your fabulous new release! I can’t wait to read it. So, I guess I’ll throw you an easy question. ;) Do you prefer “dark and brooding” or “charming and snarky”?

  18. Author questions

I like my heroes alpha with a sensitive side and a great sense of humor.

If I were trapped in a foxhole, I would want to be with my husband because he is very creative and good at solving problems.

I would like to be a strong independent heroine who is smart, confident, and compassionate.

  19. First, congrats on the release of Deception. It’s an awesome read. And French Kiss is one of my must watch at least once a year movies. My other is A Good Year with Russell Crowe. It’s also about a vineyard.
I love the descriptions of your demons and am wondering if you named the demons in your book by yourself, or did you do research and find them that way?

    • I love “A Good Year” So sexy and fun.

Thank you, Gemma. I named them myself. I have no secret way of doing this. The only demons that are from books are the Banshees and I’ve taken some liberties.

  20. If you could spend the day with any literary character, who would it be and why? What would you ask them?

  21. Do you have any writing or reading rituals?

    • Hmmm…. I like it quiet. I prefer to write on the couch in my office or on the chaise in our sunroom. I edit at my desk. I write pretty much every day, though I’m trying to not write on Sundays. I guess I don’t really have an quirks, Amy. I just put my butt in the chair and get to it. I’ve been thinking lately I might like to write to music. I see a lot of authors with playlists for their books. Haven’t tried that yet.

  22. Answers to author’s questions:

    1. Do you like your heroes alpha or sensitive?

I would say a nice mixture of the two, but a little heavier on the alpha.

    2. If you were trapped in a foxhole, who would you want in there to get you out?

Anyone who could get me out. It creeps me out just thinking about being stuck.

    3. If you were a character in a romance novel, what kind of hero/heroine would you be?

    A strong and independent heroine

  23. Question answered:
    1. Do you like your heroes alpha or sensitive?
Why not both lol obvious alpha to everyone but sensitive to just you :)

2.If you were trapped in a foxhole, who would you want in there to get you out?
Captain America (Chris Evans) would be my choice lol or even Chris Pratt

3.If you were a character in a romance novel, what kind of hero/heroine would you be?
I would be the funny curvy bookworm that works at the small town library…which i do so yeah lol thats pretty accurate description of my life

  24. Amy, your #1 is actually the perfect answer. LOVE IT! #3 made me LOL.

  25. Do your dog and cat get along?

    • They don’t fight, Bethany. Mostly they ignore each other. Though now and then I catch them touching noses and when I had the cat on the front porch one day, the neighbors dog came over to investigate and my little Molly Dog went on the defensive to protect the cat.

  26. HI A.S. is there someone you would love to meet?

    • Hi Dina, You mean like a celebrity. I’m not that into that. I treat everyone the same…. But I wouldn’t mind meeting Chris Pine in a dark alley. ;)

  27. What genre would you like to take a crack at, but you haven’t yet for whatever reason?

    • Well, Fox, I’ve written Erotic, paranormal, Historical, Historical Paranormal, Contemporary. I think I’d like to try SciFi Romance one day. That would be fun. :D

  28. What do you enjoy the most about research.

  29. Have you ever felt discouraged or lost your motivation? How did you overcome it?

    • Hi Ann, I think everyone feels that way from time to time. Mostly I just put my head down and wait for it to pass. Maybe I’ll work on something new that takes me away from a work that’s on deadline. I’m pretty positive as a rule and tend to find logic in everything. When I can’t, my husband keeps me grounded. The group of authors I belong to, KickAss Chicks is another source of support in good and dark times. They call me Yoda, because I try to stay level and calm.

  30. Who is your favorite Muppet and why?

  31. I like the sensitive heroes!

I’d want a fireman there with me, of course!

I’d be the wisecracking, resourceful type with the secretly sensual soul!

  32. Hi,
    1) your favorite foods 2) all electronic devices 3) reading or writing

    Of the three listed above…
Which would be easiest to give up for a month?
Which would be hardest to give up for a month?

    • 1. Pasta and chocolate
      2. my iPhone
      3. You can’t have writing without reading. I guess I’d have to choose reading if I could only have one.

I could give up chocolate for a month, I think. :/
I don’t think I could give up my iPhone.

  33. From any of your books, what has been one of your favorite scenes, or types of scenes, to write?

  34. Do you like your heroes alpha or sensitive?
    The more alpha the better

If you were trapped in a foxhole, who would you want in there to get you out?
My cousin. He’s military, loves hunting and weapons and he might actually try to save me.

If you were a character in a romance novel, what kind of hero/heroine would you be?
I’m boring in real life, so I would want to be a strong kick butt type of heroine.

  35. What was the hardest part of writing your book? Who is your go to author?

    • The end is usually the most difficult for me. I struggle with how to close it out for a day or two. If I’m struggling I’ll go back and read Jane Austen for inspiration. For enjoyment, I love Eloisa James.

  36. How do you decide if a book is going to be a stand alone or part of a series?

    • Hi Mary, I don’t really make that decision. Sometimes I’m writing and a secondary character jumps out at me and begs to have his/her story told. With The Demon Hunters, I was about three chapters into writing Ascension and I hit a wall. I had planned a stand alone book. It was weeks of torture trying to figure out why I was struggling. Then I realized the demon part of the book could not be told in one story and I started to flesh out the series.

  37. Alexandru Rusu

What things inspire you to write books ?

    • Hi Alexandru, I’m inspired by everything and nothing. I write because there are stories in my head. A sweet moment witnessed might spark a scene in my head and that might germinated for a year before it develops into a full fledged book. The same is true for an unpleasant scene. Everything in the world is fodder for a book. I also live in a very beautiful part of the US. The view inspires me every day.

  38. Are there other genres you would be interested in writing?

    • Hi Michelle, I love paranormal and historical. This is the first series I’ve written with both together. I’ve written Historical Romance and Contemporary PNR along with a few other genres. I think I’d like to give SciFi romance a try one day.

  39. Glenda S. Hefty

I really enjoyed the interview…thank you!

  40. Linda Szymoniak

You sound like me - I have both dogs and cats. What are yours names? Tell me a little about them.

    • Hi Linda, They are both named Molly. The dog came with the name and I couldn’t change it since she answers to it. We call them Molly dog and Molly cat. The dog is a rescue from just last year. The vet thinks she’s about 13. The cat was abandoned on our front lawn eight years ago.

  41. Hi and Congratulations! What other paranormal characters or creatures interest you?

    • Hi Valerie, I love angels and demons. I love an epic battle of good vs. evil. I’ve read some great werewolf and vampire books, but I’m not obsessed with them. I like whiches and I really like sixth sense type stories. People who see the past or the future or maybe read minds.

  42. Hi!!! My wife is originally from New York City. What do you miss the most about living there? We are now in the Mid-west, and besides her family - she misses the food!!! Especially seafood and pizza.

    • We had to build a pizza oven in our backyard , heatwave. we couldn’t live without good pizza. I live in Texas. I miss cold water from the tap in the summer. The pipes here are too shallow for the water to be cold in 100 weather. I do miss good seafood but I can get it in Houston or South Louisiana. That’s a bit of a drive for us. Italian markets, bagels and our friends and family of course.

  43. Ashley Martinez

Do you follow any kind of writing routine?

    • Hi Ashley, I try to write every morning for a few hours. I have a circle of writer friends and we meet on FB beforehand to confirm we’re all writing. It helps get my butt int he chair to know someone is checking in on me and cares if I’m getting work done. Then in the afternoon I edit and do other not so fun writer things.

  44. Just been to see three movies in 2 days as partner’s granddaughter is staying. It’s a real treat for us. Loved the movie Spy. Do you get to the movies often? Is there any recent movie you would recommend?

    • We live pretty remotely, Emma. I haven’t been to the movies in a long time. We love to watch them on Pay Per View. We watched The Kingsmen the other night. Lot’s of fun.

  45. What is your favorite thing about summer?

  46. 1. sensitive 2 Jamie Frasier 3 strong, loyal, sense of humor, compassionate

  47. What is your least favorite genre to read?

  48. who is your favorite author?

  49. Amanda Sakovitz

Wheres your favorite place to write?

    • Hi Amanda! Most of the year I write in the Sunroom overlooking the lake. I love that, but it’s too hot and bright in the summer, so I write in my office on the couch.

  50. Do you do your research on line or used physical references?

    • Hi Linda, Both. I have a lot of wonderful books on just about every topic from paranormal phenomenon to the Plantagenet dynasty. I also look stuff up on line, like when a word was first in use. Such as, the word Okay was not used until the 1920 and it was OK then. Little things like that are important when writing historical.

  51. what’s your favorite cocktail?

    • I love a good Comso, Steve. I make a good one. I love bourbon with Diet Ginger-ale. In the summer Vodka and Pink Lemonade is nice. Wine is always good. :)

  52. Kristy Maynard

What are some of your must haves for writing ( music, silence, beverage, no beverage, snacks, no snacks, etc)

  53. Hi Kristy. I like silence but that’s not always possible. I’ve been thinking about trying music, but I haven’t done it yet. I need my note book and index cards. Snacks are optional. I always have coffee or water.

  54. Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

    • Hi Mai, My life is pretty calm. I like to think I have enough common sense to get out of most situations and with luck my hubs can get me to safety when muscle is needed.
