Witch’s Brew by Tabitha Shay
Saylym Winslow has no doubt she is going crazy. She finds herself in the town of Sanctuary, it is like a whole different world, living next door to a woman who believes she is 20,000 years old and a witch to boot. Objects in her house are randomly moving on their own accord and her bed is telling -no, yelling!- at her to stop snoring and keeping it awake at night. A bed has got to get its rest too! To make matters worse, at the shop she owns, “Ye Olde Witch’s Brew Magick Shop,” the items she has for sale do not stop talking to her. And of course to top it, there is Talon, who is just as bonkers as her neighbor. He keeps saying he is a prince and a Waken, whatever that is, and crazy of all crazies, he keeps telling her she is a witch, or a least half-witch and he will claim her. Now, she cannot seem to stop fantasizing about Talon and even worse, maybe even starting to believe him. Oh yes, she definitely is going crazy.
Talon, prince among Wakens, the male witches, is searching for a female witch to claim during the Beltane season. And the first witch he happens to see in Sanctuary, is Saylym. There is something very different about that witch and it is not just the human blood he can smell in her. For one she cannot seem to control her magic. What is even more strange is that he is unable to counter any magic she does. No witch should have that kind of power. And why does she keep denying she’s a witch? Her history and lineage is unknown by all. Where did she come from and how she did get into their realm of Ru-Noc if she did not know how to use her powers? The Waken Guild fears this. She is an Impure and the guild orders Talon to steal her soul. But can he destroy her when he knows she is innocent and her soul pure?
Talon is desperate to claim Saylym as his own as he is to find a way to keep her alive and not directly disobey the guild. Saylym is desperate to bring a sense of normalcy around her and keep her wits about while Talon is nearby. But what the two are not aware of, is that there is a bigger danger than Saylym’s bungling of magic, roaming the lands in and around Sanctuary. They must find a solution and a way to save all witches and Wakens from a terror greater than the Salem witch trials. And to save the future, they must find the key to Saylym’s past.
Witch’s Brew is, without a doubt, a delightful read. The personal history and background that slips in every now and then, teases the reader, gradually giving them a broader insight into the secrets hidden within the Wiccan world of Sanctuary. Also, it is interesting to see the main characters awaken to their true natures and even the steady awareness of their feelings for one another beyond the realm of lust. It is even more interesting to see the motivation behind the antagonists’ desire for revenge and their ever growing thirst for evil. This novel has so many twists yet along with those turns come revelations and surprise that even the ending gives a delicious taste of what is to come. To put it simply, Witch’s Brew is a delectable tale with an element of wit and charm.
