Ruling Lacey by Cyan Bell
Well Ruling Lacey wasn’t at all what I expected. Here’s a recipe for how to entertain Kate. Get some reincarnation, toss in a vampire or three (make them sexy please), stir in revenge and love and viola, you’ve got a story that Kate loves.
Lacey is cruising through life working the “dead letter” department. All she has to do is hang with her best friend and try to get the letters where they need to go. Then she gets a mysterious package with a stone that gives her the Sight.
Now she touches a letter and she knows who it is supposed to go to. Unfortunately one of the letters she touches throws her into a nightmarish scene. Bell does not shy away from the graphic depiction of a vampire being turned. Nor does she skimp on the sex when she gets to it. Her heroine is in a big heap o’ trouble!
Lacey and her best friend are attacked by an evil vampire. Lacey is rescued by the vampire the letter was meant for. Together they unravel a few things and realize who is behind the psychic stone as well as the letter for the hero. It’s a wild ride with people getting turned, people getting killed and people getting what they so richly deserve.
I really enjoyed this story. At only 67 pages, Bell did a good job of letting the reader see Lacey’s journey from postal worker to kick-ass heroine. I found this to be well-crafted. Bell added in a piece of vampire lore (who can turn whom and when) that truly worked for me. It did not reinvent the wheel–just added a really well thought out “spoke” if you will.
I will look for more from this author. And yes, the cranky Southern Belle is handing out five tombstones for this one.
