Her Reaper’s Arms by Charlotte Boyett-Compo

Bevyn has seen many dark things that would haunt most normal humans forever. While it really is a good thing he is not an ordinary person, sometimes it just weighs upon his soul. And really, the sense of loneliness surrounding Bevyn Coure has gotten so thick, it has become overwhelmingly depressing. But when he heads into the town of Orson and spots a woman named Lea Walsh, he knows he wants her and he will not be denied. So he simply demands that she meet him in his room.

Lea was frightened when the Reaper came into the tavern. That fright turned to “scared out of her mind” when the Reaper demanded she go to his room. It was only when she realized that Bevyn was simply looking for someone to just simply “be” with him that her fear evaporated. She too understood the meaning of the word alone. She could definitely be happy as Bevyn’s mate, as long as he does not infect her and make her into one of his own kind.

However, that peace might not last for long. Bevyn Coure’s history, from his life before Repear-dom, has decided to make an appearance. Penthe is an Amazeen and a Blackwind to boot. She is a warrior trained to find Reapers and to kill them. Bevyn wronged her ancestor and Penthesilea vows to make Bevyn pay. Honor demands it.

Her Reaper’s Arms, added yet another interesting twist and element to the Reaper saga with this story. The world of Terra is opened up even more as bits and pieces of the puzzle fall into place. However, the main drawback I found with this story is with the characters. They were not as rounded but seemed a bit two dimensional. Lea’s dramatic change from meek and mousey to strong and willful was somewhat unbelievable. To add to that, I like thinking of Bevyn as the strong, second-in-command but even his moments of weakness (which were really his moments of vulnerability) made him seem rather pathetic and wimpy and completely not like Bevyn that is well respected and admired by people and his fellow Reapers.

It is also a well known fact that Lea thought the hellion that made a Reaper what he was, was well, rather repugnant. She did not want to be one. And as much as she loved and cared for Bevyn, she did not want her own children to be infected with it either. Now, how much she disliked what tainted a Reaper bothered me to the point where I had to ask, “Then why is she with him if she finds what he is so revolting?” Her point of view about even the possibility of becoming a Reaper invoked such emotion in me that I found I did not like Lea much at all.

When a story brings forth such emotion in a reader that is normally a good thing. But her distaste for Bevyn’s kind made me not like her, and therefore not like the fact that Bevyn was with her in the first place. On one hand, there are others who would like that this tale triggered such feeling, but on the other hand the feeling that it drew out made me unhappy with the match, and not completely satisfied with the story.
