Thanks to Rachel and the BBB crew for hosting me today, and a big thank you to everyone for dropping by!

Shadowglass is the second book in my series. Second books are difficult beasts for a writer to tackle. Once we’ve gotten over the fun of selling that first book, we have to get back to work, and it’s both sobering and terrifying. It’s no longer a question of just writing what we love. We have to write what our agent, our editor and our readers (we hope!) will love. And I don’t know about other authors, but the Fed-Ex guy still hasn’t delivered my crystal ball.

Luckily for me, my agent and editor and I seem to love the same things! But talk about keeping an author up at night. So many decisions to make. Is this story too much the same as the last one? Is it too different? What if I leave out such-and-such? Will readers be disappointed? Or maybe they’re already sick of so-and-so, and I should try something else?

Fact is, there’s no way of knowing until it’s out there. You just have to take the series in the direction you think is best. And my favourite parts of Shadowfae (book 1) are the darkly dangerous atmosphere, the sensuality and the romance. And fairies, and demons, and hungry vampires, and… everything :)

So here we are, Shadowglass and I. It’s a bigger book than Shadowfae, because I’ve delved deeper into my dark and psychedelic urban fantasy world. Before, the fairy folk were in the background, but now they’ve taken center stage – they’re sexy, crazy and colourful, and I hope you’ll love them!

Kane, the demon lord, is back, and he’s dealing with a bunch of new adversaries: confused angels, ambitious demon ladies and shapeshifting gangsters. And you’ll meet a new heroine: Ice, a waterfairy thief whose fascination for shiny things (and mysterious men) gets her in trouble.

And of course it’s sensual, dangerous and romantic. With a happy ending. I think I’ve kept all the good bits. I hope you agree :)

Here’s the cover copy:

“A seductive magic mirror lies hidden deep in a demon’s lair, with a simple warning: don’t stare at the glass…

Ice is a troubled fairy trying her best to survive in the squalid underworld of the Shadowfae. When she spends a hot night with a demon lord, she discovers a powerful magic mirror in his lair — and pilfers it, knowing it’s the key to escaping her bleak life as a two-bit con artist. But Ice soon discovers that the mirror’s power comes with a price…madness, which is slowly overtaking her.

Indigo oozes darkness, danger and tempting sensuality. He’s been sent to destroy Ice and bring the mirror back to its rightful owner; a mission that, if he fails, will cost him his life. But when he meets Ice, he faces an even greater challenge: an insatiable sexual hunger that neither of them can deny, and dark passions that threaten to claim them both forever. The trouble is, the longer he stays within the mirror’s reach, the greater its hold on his sanity—and the stronger his determination to save Ice…”

So you tell me: what makes you pick up book 2 in a series? Do you have to really love the first book? Or will you take a chance on a series where book 1 had potential, but wasn’t in your favourites?

And what if you haven’t read book 1? Will you jump into the middle of a series if it sounds cool, or do you like to start with book 1?

And what can make you decide to give the second book a miss? The absence of a beloved character? A plot twist you don’t like the sound of? Or even the fear that book 2 won’t be as good, and will ruin your enjoyment of book 1?

    HI Erica!
If I really love a first in a series, I will ALWAYS read the second. I tend to really, really love series, so if I know there will will more coming, I tend to be more inclined to read book one. I don’t like to stat with book 2. I have won book 2 or 3 of a series before in a giveaway and I will always go out and buy the previous books, so I can read them first. I dont think I would ever not pick up the second unless the first was so terrible, I didnt enjoy it. I do mostly read series. I enjoy coming back to the same characters. It’s like feeling you know them.

I RSVPed. I have not read your series but it seems like it would be a good read. Now for your questions, 1.I really have to click with the story, the dialog, characters and the freshness of the plot. 2. I will jump into a series anywhere, and then if I like the componets of question number one I will buy from the first and read it as it should be read. 3. Lots of second books miss the mark big time, but if the author still has my intrest in the over plot of the series I will buy no. 3 and not worry about how it detracts from book one. A humoress fact about myself is I quit reading one book about 75 pages from the end. That was 25 years ago and still refuse to end the book because I don’t want the author to kill off one of the characters. I have enterd the free to win book, both RSVP’s for Wed and Thur., and I plan to participate in them. Thankyou, Lisa D.

I will usually try to read the first book prior to reading the second, because it makes more sense to read things in order. I like second books in the series better usually, because it gives the author a chance to delve deeper into the story, where the first book is kind of trying it on for size. I typically try to read the entire series if I can, if the first book intrigues me enough and has potential for a great series. I feel like something is unfinished if I don’t read them all.

PS. I RSVP’d for this event.

I’ve given series another shot if i didn’t LOVE the first. I never considered not picking up the second thinking it wouldn’t meet my expectations. The only time I’ve not read subsequent novels in a series (I can think of specific ones but don’t want to name them) is when the writing just doesn’t draw me in, and I find my mind wandering, kind of bored and not caring what happens. Fortunately, that’s only happened a few times.
And I absolutely CANNOT read a book in a series without reading the first. I’ve picked up books in stores that look really interesting that are parts of series, then find the ones I’ve missed either in that store or online. And if I already like the series I’ll avoid reading the back cover, so everything is a surprise.

Hello Erica, Thank You for spending time with us today.

I go for the new authors/series. IF I truly loved the 1st book and find myself hunting down the release date for the second it’s a BUY. I am however cautious on the 2nd book if the 1st book has potential and didn’t annoy too much; it’s a buy.

If I can get away with reading the series out of order I will. I can’t read a series straight thru; I need an unparanormal mystery about every 3rd book.

To miss the 2nd book, I would not have finished the 1st book either because it was overly simplified to the point of boredom.

To miss the 2nd book, I would not have finished the 1st book either because it was overly simplified to the point of bordom.

I almost always try to read the first book before reading the second. If I read and enjoyed the first book in the series then I want to read the second. The only time I won’t read the scond book in a series is if I just didn’t like the writting style or the characters in the first book. If I didn’t enjoy the first book I’m just not interested in reading any more in the series.

I’ve never not read a second book thinking it will not be as good as the first. I usually find that second books are better since most of the world building and character introductions have been done in the first book. The second book can be more about the story.

Hi Erica. Shadowglass sounds great. I find that if the first book in a serious is good then I want read the second one. I don’t like to start in the middle of a series. I will buy both books and read them in order. I will give a second book a miss if I did not enjoy the first book.

Hi Erica!!! I’m so glad you could be here on my special day. Its my birthday!!! :) When is your b-day?

To pick-up book 2 in a series, I have to be drawn into the characters lives, and really want to know what happens next. I need to care about them and want to the know the answers to all the questions the author has raised. I don’t think I’d ever start in the middle of a series. If I’m just learning about a series, and like the concept, I’ll start with book 1. I’m always afraid I’ll miss something if I don’t start right in the beginning.

What are some of your favorite series?

    Hi Erica,

I always tend to start with the first book in a series. It may sound strange but no matter how many books are in a series I tend to buy the first 3 books (unless there are less). Even if the first book doesn’t blow my socks off, I will go ahead and read the next book. I have found that writers tend to develop their skills more with the second and third books and so on. Once I start a series, I like to finish it and see how things turn out for the characters.
    Congratulations on book 2 :)

I’ll read the first book and then make my decision from there…if I find characters and a plot that leaves an impression on me then I will definitely pick up the second book. The first doesn’t always necessarily have to wow me but as long as I see the potential in the story then I’ll definitely keep up with the authors work.

I have to read a series from the very beginning…That’s an absolute must! There have been occasions where I may buy a book or win a book that may be part of a series but before I start that book I always have to ones that lead up to it.

I’ve been fortunate enough so far to follow up with the second books and more in the series stories that I do follow.

    2. In answer to Eva’s first question, I usually will pick up the second book if I loved the first book. I recently read a first book in a series and hated it so I will not be picking up the second one!

I have a good case in point with starting in the midst of a series. My favorite series of all time, The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, was introduced to me by the third book, Queen of the Damned. It still remains my favorite book too! It really depends though on how stand alone each individual book can be. Some series, you absolutely have to read starting with the first book. Others, you can get away with starting in the middle.

As I said in my first answer, usually the only reason I’ll pass on the second book is if I strongly disliked the first one.

    Hi!

1- For a series with multiple books, as long as I enjoyed the first one (even just a little) then I’ll usually pick up the second. I’ve read a few series that didn’t get really good until the third or fourth book, so I’m always willing to keep reading~ There’s been a few series though, where I couldn’t finish the first book because it was bad or I wasn’t into it, in which case I was done with the whole series.

2- As far as the order of reading, I won’t ever read the second or third book of a series (intentionally) without reading the ones that come before because I think you loose a bit of the magic of that series by doing so. I’ve accidentally read the second book in a few series, time where you don’t realize it’s a part of a larger whole, and I usually end up feeling lost or like a I missed a chapter that explains these random characters that pop up that you’re suppose to know.

3- like I said as long as I finished/enjoyed the first book, I’ll almost always pick up the second. There’s a comfort in reading something with familiar characters in it.

I posted a link to this site on Myspace - I’ll email it to the email address above.

I also entered for the free book, Rsvp for Wed, RSVP for THursday and did the book chat today

There has to be something in book 1 that makes me go “what’s going to happen?!” for me to pick up book 2. It could be anything, from finding out about a secondary character or just a tibit that the author drops that wasn’t completely explained. I guess it’s the potential of the book that makes me pick up the second book, but the writing style definitely needs to read well first.

I rarely jump into the middle of a series. I may read a tangent or parallel story in an anthology and pick up the series though, so I think it might have happened before, but I generally like to start at book 1.

1– Hmm….If I didn’t like the first book, I would probably not read the second. Unless I knew the character in the second book was one I really wanted to read about. I’ve had that happen before :-)

2–I definitely like to start from book one!

3– I don’t really know. It could be allot of things. But there are to many books out there to read one you (personally) don’t like.

Glad to know your books have a happy ending! That’s the one sure thing to say to get me to read one LOL. Gotta have that HEA! :-)

I haven’t read the first book in the series “ShadowFae” yet, but I was checking out your website last night and I am definitely going to go out and buy it! It sounds like a very interesting and entertaining read so I am really excited because I am always looking for new twists on urban fantasy/paranormal fiction.

I never start with the second book in a series, I’ve been told I’m a little bit of a nut but I won’t even watch tv shows out of order.

Characters do play a large part in my choosing to pick up the second book in a series. If I read a book and gained a connection with the characters or the plot I am more than likely to pick up the next one. I’m not one to quit reading a series I have liked because my favorite character does something I hate or dies as long as the overall story is progressing I’m there with characters battling it out. Horrible stuff happens all the time you can’t expect every book to have everything tied up in a nice little bow. I believe that I would pass on a book 2 if I simply never gained a connection with any characters or the plot of the first book. I have to care about the characters to continue.

what makes you pick up book 2 in a series? Do you have to really love the first book? Or will you take a chance on a series where book 1 had what What makes you pick up book 2 in a series?
The first book, along with the blurb and excerpt, have to be really good for me. Otherwise I won’t bother even bother reading the first book to begin with.

And what if you haven’t read book 1?
It depends on the blurb and excerpt. But I will be willing to read in the middle of the series, only if I can’t get the first book(s)

And what can make you decide to give the second book a miss?
I’ve never not read a series where I stopped reading after the first book. But I suppose if I really liked a character enough and they are killed off in the first, then yeah I wouldn’t read on. Or if I feel the book really wasn’t all that great or I’m not that interested in enough.

If I enjoyed the first book (it doesn’t have to be perfect), I’m likely to pick up the second, especially if I liked a few of the characters. I would take a chance. Sometimes the sequels get better. :)

I started Kim Harrison’s Hollows series on book 3 because there were boots on the cover and the blurb looked good on the back. I like to start with book one, but I didn’t realize it at the time, so I just went back and read the first 2 later. I did the same thing reading book 9 of LKH’S Anita Blake series. So I prefer starting at #1, but that won’t stop me from picking up a book series in the middle to read.

It would have to be atrocious. There aren’t many bad picks I’ve read, so this has never happened. I’ve survived the deaths of favorite characters and still read. I don’t prefer that, but if I like a series, even if it goes a bit off the deep end, I still read it. I’m kind of brand-loyal that way. So if you get me with one, I’ll probably read more. :)

Thanks for the questions. I like when authors ask us what we think, and I like your fae ideas with the conflict. Thanks for being here today!

Will do book chat and RSVPs if I haven’t already.

If I don’t like book one I never go on to book two in a series. In fact, if I’m not into the first book by page 100 I’ll stop reading. If I like book one I have never NOT gone on to read the follow up. I will NOT jump into a series either. Have to start at the beginning.

I love series. I like reading about what happens to the characters in the first book. That is why I will always pick up book 2. Many times I have read Book 2 or 3 first and I always wind up going back to the book store and getting books I missed. If I start a series(whether from the first book or whenever), I always get the rest of it. Sometimes, I’m not thrilled with the second book or one of the others, but I keep with the series until it has run it’s course.Patsy H.

Picking up 2, well yes if I love the first of course, taking a chance, no, if I find it or borrow it yes, but not buying it.

No, I could never just jump in, then I will just head out and get book 1 first.

Not giving book 2 a go, well if it really sucks, or if I am broke, as simple as that

Normally, if I’ve read and enjoyed the first book in a series, I’ll pick up the second. I have picked up a book near the “center” of the series and found several too tough to get into. But if I didn’t like book one, I’ll usually pass on a second (or anything after that). The only reason I’d have any trepidation about picking up book two if I liked book one is if there was a complete absence of any favorite characters.

I am kind of anal like that. :) If I like the blurb/cover then I will grab it, read it and if found it is a series, start reading the others as well. Do I keep with the series? BUT - if the characters made an impact on me, I will try to read the next in the series. SO I guess it’s not completely hit or miss :)

If I enjoyed book one in a series(like or love), I will definitely get further book in the series. Very rarely I’ll dislike book one so much that I won’t continue the series. Only happened once in recent years. The woman’s boyfriend was killed near the end of book one. Even though I already owned book two, I’ve never read it or reread book one.
I don’t like starting in the middle of a series. Only done it once in recent years. Read an anthology and one of the stories was by Christine Feehan. That was my intro to her Carpathians. Spent the nest couple months gathering the other books in the series and reading them. A few were read out of order because of the order I bought them in. Most times I’ll wait til I have all the released books available before I start reading, but just couldn’t wait with those.
One thing that can make me stop reading a series is the death of a main character, but not always. After all non-immortals do get old eventually. I have stopped reading a couple series in the last few years, not at book 2-more like 5 or 6, because there is one main character that is followed through all the books and the stories eventually got boring with the unchanging cast of characters and the main character seems to be stuck in a rut, never changing him or her self, never growing.

Many times I have jumped into a series without reading the first one. I end up going back to find out what I have missed. If I find the I don’t like a book in a series I will continue to stay with it because of the characters.

Wow, you guys will try anything:) that’s awesome. I admit I like to try first books… but if the second book in the series sounds really cool, I’ve been known to jump in midstream.

But there’s no way I could wait until I have all the books before starting. The suspense would kill me… but then sometimes you have to wait for so long… *cough*KMM*cough*

Still, the waiting is part of the magic, right? And it’s a good excuse to re-read all the previous books!

what makes you pick up book 2 in a series?
If I love a book, the second is an automatic pick up. If I find potential, then I will pick it up eventually, but not right away. I will still pick it up however.

And what if you haven’t read book 1?
I have jumped into a middle of a series, although not often. I usually love to read book 1 and go from there.

And what can make you decide to give the second book a miss?
Usually the absence of a beloved character will delay me from reading the second. However, if it is a really good series, I will pick it up anyway to read.

A lot of the time, I’ll pick up book two before I’ve read book one, just because I’ve heard good things about the series. If I wasn’t that impressed with the first book, I might not pick up the second, unless I read a good review or hear that it is much better than the first.

I really dislike jumping into the middle of a series, I like to read them from the beginning. I have done it before, mostly because I didn’t realize it was a series, but then I have to go back and read the rest from the beginning.

The only way I would miss the second book in a series is if I didn’t care for the first one. If I enjoyed the first, I will definitely pick up the second, third, etc.

    1. I am a sucker for a series. I will definitely try book 2 if the first has potential. the first in a series usually has a lot of ground to cover…world building, character introduction. That sort of thing.

    2. I have to go in order, unless I am sure they can stand alone.

    3. The absense of a character could do it. Or if the characters live in the same world, if the second character is weak compared to the first, that could do it too.

If I like book 1 in a series, I will definitely get book 2, then book 3 if I like that one. If I read book 2 or 3 without realizing it is part of a series and I like it, I will go back and read the rest of the series. I’ll pick up a book and read the cover blurb. If I like the sound of it, I’ll get it. If I didn’t like the first book in a series, I still might pick up following books and try again if I like the blurb.

I haven’t read your novels yet but they already got me curious just by reading the cover blurb, that’s usually how I decide if I’m going to read a book or not. Anyway I’m a stickler for reading books in order if they’re part of a series the only exception to that is if the author his or herself tells me that they don’t necessarily have to be read in order.

There are few times when I’ll jump right into the middle of a series, one or two exceptions would Karen Marie Mooning’s Highlander series or Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series and even then I just jumped right into them because I didn’t know they had to be read in order and they just seemed like they would be go reads by themselves, it wasn’t until later that I found out that they were part of series, but they seemed like they would stand on their own pretty well.

I don’t think I’d ever skip the second book in the series, even if I wasn’t real crazy about the first one that’s no reason not to give the second one a chance, if I ever did skip the second book I don’t think I’d last very long before I’d rush right back out and buy the thing, my natural curiosity wouldn’t allow it.

What great questions! I will say I’m rather anal about reading books in order. I will read out of order, but it disturbs me greatly:) If I love a first book, I will read the second EVERY time. If I like the book but have just a few doubts I’ll give it a second chance for sure. I can’t think of a reason I wouldn’t read a second book in a series if I liked the first one. I also tend to trust authors I like. If a character dies for instance– I don’t stop reading the author’s books. I trust that they had their reasons, and all will be made clear to me as it continues.

1)what makes you pick up book 2 in a series? Do you have to really love the first book? Or will you take a chance on a series where book 1 had potential, but wasn’t in your favourites?

Personally I give “new authors” and “new series” a three book trial before I make a complete and total judgement. There was one exception to the rule but I gave the series one hell of a fighting chance for I read thirteen books and only liked perhaps two or three (It was Christine Feehan’s Dark series). With new series, be they romance, paranormal, or even fantasy, the first book generally drags because the author first has to paint and set up their world for readers. Yes if the first book grabbed me immediately I am the type of person that must have more to see what happens next or learn about characters from the first book. Also, if book one wasn’t considered a favorite but I became enamored of characters and/or it had potential to get better, yes I will pick up book two for the same reason to see what happens next.

2)And what if you haven’t read book 1? Will you jump into the middle of a series if it sounds cool, or do you like to start with book 1?

About ten or so years ago the answer would have been yes. Around that time I devoured what books came into my possession for I couldn’t wait. Friend of mine was horrified that I read series books out of context, amazed that I didn’t get confused. She made me promise/swear to never read series out of context again. Now it was alright if I started a book, didn’t know it was apart of a series too late. I’ve been keeping to that promise pretty faithful.

    3) And what can make you decide to give the second book a miss? The absence of a beloved character? A plot twist you don’t like the sound of? Or even the fear that book 2 won’t be as good, and will ruin your enjoyment of book 1?

Very good question… One that I have never really put much thought of before. Plot twist may turn me off depending on the kind that they are.. I have a penchant of getting attached to back/side characters, so the mention of a favorite being murdered off or something would put me off..

    Hi Erica,

I’ll pick up book 2 in a series if I really loved the first book. Also if the first book somehow left me hanging and I need to know how this element gets resolved. I’m not saying that the first book didn’t have a conclusion of the main story plot just that it introduced and set up the next book’s story ploy.
I’m not so sure that I’d give a second chance to a series where book 1 had potential, but wasn’t in my favorites, for the simple reason that the author hasn’t shown that she can deliver the full goods and to be honest there are so many other books out there that even second chances have to be shelled out sparingly.

I have jumped into the middle of a series. That’s why I enter contests for books. I may not have the money to gamble on new book and new author, but it is for free, I’ll give it a try.

I’ve never feared that book 2 won’t be as good, and will ruin my enjoyment of book 1. I just don’t think that way. The ride you take reading the book should be like a roller-coaster ride dragging emotions from you with unexpected highs and lows. I have to feel exhilarated at the end of a good book. A kind of high that stays with you and makes you hold on until the next installment.

I will pick up the 2nd book in a series if I loved the first, but there are some occasions that I didn’t love the first book but it was interesting enough that I want to see if the second book gets better.

If I am reading a series I have to start with book one. Twice I have read books out of order because I didn’t even know they were part of a series, but once I learned my mistake I had to start from the beginning.

I usually have to read the first book before I buy the second. I start by reading reviews about both. If the reviews are good, I’ll pick up book 1. If I love book 1, I’ll buy book 2.

It helps that I have a Barnes and Noble account, they have great discounts.

And what if you haven’t read book 1? Will you jump into the middle of a series if it sounds cool, or do you like to start with book 1?

No, I really don’t like being lost, and I can’t get into a book without knowing the context.

And what can make you decide to give the second book a miss? The absence of a beloved character? A plot twist you don’t like the sound of? Or even the fear that book 2 won’t be as good, and will ruin your enjoyment of book 1?

If my favorite character isn’t in it, or the reviews for book 2 aren’t that great, I might give it a pass. I’ll probably get it and start reading, but if I don’t like what I see, I’ll just stop and not finish it.

Hi Erica! I haven’t read your series yet, but I’m looking forward to reading it!
As for your question, I will usually give the second book in a series a chance if I see potential in the first book. I can’t usually start a series in the middle. I’m very particular about reading in order, even when they don’t have to be read in order. If I enjoyed the first book, I usually read the second. Just because I’ve heard that some people haven’t liked it doesn’t really sway me one way or the other. Peoples opinions vary way too much.

    Hi Erica,

it’s a bit different with me- if I like the idea of some series, then I wait until I have all the books from it before I start reading, because I don’t like starting in the middle and not knowing what happened previously, or finishing a couple of books, and then waiting until I get the rest. I usually forget what the first books were all about till then:)
And even if I don’t like the second and later books as the first one, I don’t stop reading until I finish the whole series, as I like to know how it ends. For me to drop the series (or a book) without finishing it, it has to be math-textbook-like boring, and make me yawn at every page:) I’ve read only a couple of books like that, and none of them were my cup of tea anyway.

I HAVE to love the first book to read the second, and I will NEVER start the second if I haven’t read the first.

Most of the time, if I was a fan of the first book, I’ll stay loyal to the series, but the first one has to grab me or I’m very reluctant to try again.

Having said that, I’ll read the first in its entirety, even if it doesn’t grab me. I believe in giving a book a full chance.

Oh, I so love everyone’s answers :) y’all are chicken soup for the author’s soul.

It’s only recently I started DNF-ing books that didn’t grab me — just because I don’t have time to read books I’m not really enjoying. Before, I always used to read to the end, and stopping in the middle still makes me feel guilty :(

How about you? Do you have a DNF policy? Do you always read to the end, like Melissa P above me? Or do you read half and then decide?

I always begin with a first book in a series — I can only think of one instance where I did not. I will always pick up a second book in a series as long as I enjoyed the first one. Occasionally, if I was not absolutely enamored of a first book, I will still get the second as long as I did not dislike the first book, or, as you said, thought the first showed potential.

If I really loved the first book and got into the series I will pick up book 2. If I really didn’t get into the first book but think the 2nd book might be good than I might pick up when I am looking for something to read but it isn’t a priority.

I prefer to read a series in order especially if they are linked with a continuation of the story. If they are a series but can be read as stand alone books and I am just dying to read one of the books than I might read them out of order especially if I am having some problems finding the earlier books.

What would make me decide to miss the second book might be some problems getting into the first book. If I loved the first book I would definitely get the second. I don’t worry too much that the second one won’t be as good as the first. I expect differences and know there might be completly different twists but I want the books to be different otherwise it would lose something at least I think it would.
