Interview:

Hi Charlaine!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Charlaine’s newest book A Touch of Dead.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

CH: Challenges? Every day is a challenge. I hate to use a sea metaphor, but being a writer is like being the entire crew of a large ship. To extend that, when you reach your destination in one piece . . . that’s a great reward.

BBB: Do you consider different books paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

CH: It’s not important to me personally, no. But to the people shelving the books it’s quite important, because readers are looking for a book skewed more to romance or more to adventure, and they want to look in the right place.

BBB: Do you feel that the South provides a particularly rich setting for vampire and other paranormal fiction?

CH: I’ve read great paranormal fiction set all over the world, so I don’t think so. We southern writers do like to present the South with a flourish, though.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

CH: I think I’d better keep mum on that.

BBB: You mentioned in an another interview that you know who Sookie will end up with. Can you tell us how long we have to wait to find out? Or, you know, maybe a hint? : )

CH: No.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

CH: Not very well. Actually, I’ve had to hire a couple of people to help me on continuity. After this many books in the series, I may blank out on some bit of business I did five years ago, say.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

CH: I know my agent loves his, because he gets so many submissions it cuts way back on hauling a ton of paper around. And I see people on vacation very happy at having so many books at their fingertips without having to pack them. I myself still prefer to hold a book.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

CH: I’m sure they’re going to have an impact, but I’m not sure what it’ll be in the long run.

BBB: What one thing would you change about the TV series if you could?

CH: Honestly, I can’t think of a thing. I am so pleased with the way it’s going, it would be ridiculous of me to want more.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

CH: A Harper Connelly comes out later this month, the collection of Sookie short stories just came out and it’s doing well, DEATH’S EXCELLENT VACATION with an original Sookie story will be out next August, and Dead in the Family will be out next May.

BBB: Have we seen the last of Alcide?

CH: Gosh, no.

BBB: Will we ever see anymore of the fae???

CH: Yes.

BBB: Where do you see the urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

CH: I see no signs of a slowdown. It’s an exciting genre with some fantastic talent.

BBB: if you had to choose for yourself, would it be Bill or Eric? Or Sam?

CH: Fortunately for me, I get all three.

BBB: How do you navigate the actual story writing, e.g. do you pre-plot it all out, get the main details and pantz it, divide up chapters, etc.?

CH: Ha! I wish I were that organized. I just flex my fingers and go.

BBB: Soooooooooooooo which vampire was Sookie’s great-grandfather referring to in the last book?

CH: Mum on that one.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

CH: All they have to do is check my Calendar on my website http://www.charlaineharris.com to find out where I’ll be, and when.

BBB: If you could choose to be either a shapeshifter or vampire for eternity, which would you choose and why? Or would you be some other creature?

CH: I like being human, actually.

BBB: Did you ever in your wildest dreams ever think your series would become such a huge success and the show as well?

CH: No, I did not. It’s been a wonderful ride.

    Charlaine,

What do you or would you say to Sookie fans who are disappointed that there favorite scenes from the book may never show up on the TV screen, with Alan taking his own storyline path?

Hi! I only started reading your series a little while ago, so I’m only just finished your third book. I love them though! Here are my two questions for you:
1.) Where to you get your ideas for the Sookie series?
2.) How do you feel about having a tv show based on your series?

I posted this on my facebook! http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fbittenbybooks.com%2F%3Fp%3D12124&t=Interview%2C%20Chat%20and%20Contest%20with%20Author%20Charlaine%20Harris#/profile.php?id=833152574&ref=profile

Hi Charlaine! I have been reading both the Sookie and Harper series and have thoroughly enjoyed them!

Another thing I like is your Books of the Week on your blog. It definitely looks like you love to read as much as write. I’d like to know, is there a particular genre you love, and possibly one that you won’t touch? :)

    Thank you!

Welcome to BBB Charlaine! I saw you this past weekend at Bouchercon and (Rachel is going to whip me with a wet noodle for this) didn’t get a chance to get you some BBB bookmarks. *ducks* This was a great interview and I’ve been looking forward to it. The only problem I’m having is coming up with a question. All of mine were either answered here or at Bouchercon which, by the way, had some great panels! Or….I KNOW it’s one you won’t answer! LOL So, I suppose I’ll stick with a comment. I love the books and the show and can’t wait for more! I know some people don’t like that the show isn’t EXACTLY like the books but I’m fine with it. I don’t want to know exactly what’s going to happen and I like that Mr. Ball has shaken things up a bit. Thanks again for playing with us!

I suppose I do have one question. What do you think of conventions such as Bouchercon or RT? Not just from an author’s viewpoint but as a reader also.

Has there been an instance where in hindsight you have regretted killing a character?

As a teacher you have inspired me beyond belief. I have never read a series that has captivated me like the Sookie Stackhouse novels. When I first became additiced to the novels, I would stay up all hours of the night reading because I just couldn’t get enough. I am a huge fan of Eric’s! Can you tell me if we will see the same type of situation that occured with Sookie and Bill when Eric’s maker turns up in Dead in the Family? Thank you so much for your time!

    2. Hi Charlaine! I absolutely ❤ your books!!! and I also think Alan Ball is a genius for 6ft Under, so when I heard y’all were collaborating for True Blood, well I just about died of glee! It’s been one of those magical match-ups for a fan like me, sort of like a man’s fantasy baseball scenario, lol! My favorite book so far (for obvious reasons-I love vulnerable Eric!) is Dead to the World, and I look forward to reading more. Reading this series has literally made me laugh out loud, more so than any other; and I really think you do a kick-ass job of capturing a “southern” voice. The nuances are really good; so much so that I thought you were from Lousiana, lol. I ❤ you and thnx for chatting with us :D
-1)Before Alan Ball approached you for True Blood, were you familiar with his work? Were you a fan of Six Feet Under?
-2)Why did you name Sookie Sookie? Is it a nickname for something?

When you first started writing the series did you plan on Eric and Sookie evolving the way they have?

Eric is probably one of the most popular vampires in Literature. How do you feel about Eric’s popularity and fanbase? Are you surprised?

Hi Charlaine, a very warm welcome from us in the UK. I’ve only just started to read your books as a result of True Blood (I’ve just finished Dead in Dallas) - But I think they’re brilliant, can’t wait to find out what happens in the future.

My question is, that I know the TV series and your books don’t exactly correspond in terms of story-line - but is there one thing from the TV series that you might include in up & coming novels (copyright permitting) - Jessica as Bill’s daughter perhaps?

*Giddy* I LOVE your SOOKIE books!

Thanks, Charlaine, for taking time out to answer some of our questions! And thanks, Rachel, for organizing it! Woot Woot

I know you only have a small amount of time to share with us today, Charlaine, so I won’t ask the millions of questions I want to ask!

    QUESTION:
The buzz around Twitter and Face book was huge when we heard you’d be on an episode of True Blood. All be it a small part, we were all glued to the TV, watching for you! I’m excited to be able to ask you how did it feel to be there, in Sam’s bar, and seeing all your characters walking around you?

And If it’s not too cheeky, I’m gonna sneak in one more question!

Is Sookie going to have another love interest in ‘Dead in the Family’?

    2. I was very interested when Alan Ball’s agent approached my agent. But it was two years after that, more or less, when the show actually reached the screen.

    3. I say that the TV show and the books are separate experiences. Alan can’t film the books literally, because they’re told in the first person. And the books aren’t a visual experience like the show. They have to be taken separately.

    4. Oh, sure, the one where Godric met the sun.

    5. I think writers are born, not made. Ideas come because I’m a writer, and they come from a variety of sources. All great ideas start with “what if.” And I love “True Blood.”

    6. I love to read, absolutely. I read a lot of science fiction and a lot of mysteries. I can’t think of any genre I simply won’t touch at all.

I left a message in the past to rsvp as dbert.

Question 1: In the end of your last book, Sookie’s great grandfather indicated “that man really loves you” or something along those lines, but it left the reader not sure which man he was referring to, Erik or Bill? If you can’t answer that question, will that particular question be answered in another book, since Sookie’s great grandfather states he will be leaving her life infinitely?

Question 2: Are children in Sookie’s future?

BTW: I really enjoy your books. A new book is a large highlight among my very crazy and uneventful life. Thank you for adding some excitement and drama to my life.

    7. From a reader’s viewpoint, I think conventions are wonderful. You get to be in the same room with your favorite writer and get a glimpse into what he or she is really like, and you can get your books signed, too. You can also listen to writers you’ve never encountered before and get some good ideas for your reading list.

    8. Yes, in one or two instances I’ve regretted killing off a character, but mostly they need to die for one reason or another.

    10. I’m not sure I understand the question. Sorry.

    11. You mean, write young adult instead of adult? Nope. That bug hasn’t bitten me yet.

Yes I rsvped. I have enjoyed your Sookie Stackhouse series or true blood series! I’m waiting for A Touch of Dead to come out in paperback, hardbacks cost too much for me! Do you feel that True Blood on HBO has increased your reader base? I know a friend of mine is now hooked and he would never have read any of your books. I’ve let him read mine and I watch his tv. 12. I’m sure there’s something wrong with me, because I have very little interest in writing screenplays. Maybe if I didn’t have so much else to write, I might summon the energy to learn something new, but right now . . . no.

    13. Yes, I was familiar with “American Beauty” and “Six Feet Under.” Sookie is a very old southern nickname. My grandmother’s best friend was called Sookie.

    15. Koren, I reward myself when I get a royalty check or a big advance. I buy something I don’t really need. I enjoy it very much. I’m having trouble setting goals these days because there doesn’t seem to be much else to long for.

    17. As long as the ratings are good and the cast wants to continue, “True Blood” will stay on the air, I assume.

    18. No, I didn’t do a lot of planning when I began the series, because I didn’t know if I’d ever get to write more than “Dead Until Dark,” which I wrote without a contract. I’m surprised that Eric is so adored, when he is such a ruthless and calculating character, but he does have his funny side, and he is a sexy guy.

    19. I definitely do some research, but of course any research about mythical creatures can be turned inside out for story purposes.

Hi Ms. Harris, I saw that you said you don’t do a lot of preplanning on your novels, that you just “flex and go”. Do you think this is a more creative approach than outlining, etc. before you begin? I’m not big on outlining (I always write the outline after I write the paper!) so I wanted to know what you thought from a creativity standpoint.

LOVE the characters you have created, by the way :)

The torture scene in the last book was very tortuous to read.. Are the rest of the Sookie books going to be as dark? I hope not. I want Sookie and her friends to have a little happiness but she always seems to be beaten up and tortured. Can we have at least one or two happy scenes?

    21. I will not incorporate any ideas specific to “True Blood.” For one thing, I’m several books ahead of the development of the show, and for another thing, that would just feel strange to me, assuming it would be legal.

    22. Yes, A TOUCH OF DEAD will be out in audio, but I don’t know the date.

    23. No, Lacy, I find it interesting.

    24. Alan and I had lunch in Merlotte’s that day, and it was surprisingly homey being there. I had met most of the actors already, and it was good to see them again. Rehearsing the scene was fun. I was impressed with how complex a procedure making just a little bit of film can be.

Sookie does have A love interest in the next book.

    25. If I’m in LA while they’re filming something I could reasonably be in, I’d be glad to do another cameo. But those are two big things to match up.

    28. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the books. There are children in Sookie’s future, but they may not be hers or live with her.

    29. My home state is Mississippi, and I chose northern Louisiana because Anne Rice had done such a great job with southern Louisiana. I thought it was time someone paid attention to the ignored northern part, and I thought that would be funny.

    30. I’d probably bring back Claudine.

    31. I’m honored to be compared to Jane Austen, but I don’t see it, myself.

    32. I’d been writing conventional mysteries for years, and I wanted to widen my reader base . . .plus, it sounded like fun, and I love to enjoy my job.

Why did you choose a telepath? I just love Sookie and the idea of a waitress that can read minds is just too neat. Also, is the humor intentional? There is so much that I laugh at and probably shouldn’t. LOL

I just finished reading the boxed set of the Sookie Stackhouse books this past weekend and promptly went out and got the DVDs from the first season of True Blood (I don’t have cable). One thing that really struck me throughout the books (which I loved, BTW) was how evocative they were of my time in the region — I lived eight years in the Ozarks and was lucky enough to visit New Orleans twice.

What, for you, most typifies the northern Louisiana setting of the books? The sense of family? The small-town atmosphere? Something else?

And what’s your favorite thing about writing about supes? :)

    33. Thanks so much.

    35. I feel a lot of pressure, but I’m writing only one Sookie a year. I have to write other things, too.

    36. My characters belong to me.

    37. I wish I were more like Sookie. She’s a lot braver than I am!

    38. It’s very possible. Paula tells me the closet is almost full again!

    39. Possibly. But that’s a long way away, and I’ll know more after I write the next book, I think.

    40. Lily and Jack did appear in one of the Sookie books, but since their worlds are so different it could only be a cameo appearance.

    41. The show has increased my reader base by multiples. No doubt about it.

    42. I love to write Pam. Something I would change? No continuity errors!!

    43. All the characters on the show are a little different from the way I wrote them. But they have to fit into the context of the show. Of course, I love Sookie most of all, because I fit into her skin.

    44. I do plan on writing some more “strong willed females” in my furture work. That seems to be what I’m good at.

    45. A favorite Sookie book? Not really. There are things I like about all of them. I guess ALL TOGETHER DEAD is one of my favorites.

    46. Misty: yes, yes, no.

    47. No, not always. I’m a pretty spur-of-the-moment kind of writer.

    50. I’ve been in talks about other characters of mine being on the screen, but nothing’s really gelled with me yet. I’ve had a few crossovers, but all the worlds are so different that a lot of crossover is impossible.

    53. No, I don’t think it’s more creative. I think it’s scatterbrained. But that’s the way I work. Creativity doesn’t have to be disorganized.

    54. I don’t know. That makes me queasy thinking about it. Only one more story?

    55. Hello, friend.

    57. Thanks, Brenda.

    58. There is so much to write! So little time!

    59. No, I’ve never experienced such pressure, thank goodness.

    60. Yep, that was pretty dark, and it was meant to be. There’ll be happier scenes in the future, though.

    62. I don’t mind. I figure Alan is the expert on the TV end of it.

    63. Yes, I do know how the series will end.

    Hi Charlaine,
Thank you for coming by. I have a non-Sookie question! I adore the Harper Connelly series- do you know how long the series will be? I am anxiously awaiting to find out what is next for her and Tolliver.

My other question: When you saw the first season of True Blood, was it hard to see characters that were buried long ago? I felt emotional seeing Gran and Lafayette and was wondering, as their creator, if it was like that for you, too.

I already have my order in for season 2 of True blood, I’m just witing for the release. Will you be doing more with Sookie’s cousin’s son in later books? I just read your collection of short stories, will you be doing more on Sookie or anyone else? Thank you again for visiting with us.

Hi Charlaine. Your books are absolutely wonderful! I have read most, if not all, of them. One of the things that I love about your writing style is that you have a wonderful sense of flair, but it varies a bit per your different series.

Do you have any new series ideas floating around in your head that may be written soon?

I can’t wait for next Tuesday to pick up the next book in the Harper Connolly series. Thanks for the great books, and wonderful TV show. Eric is awfully yummy :)

    66. I am always way behind on Facebook. It’s the thing I do when I have extra time. You can imagine how often that is . . .or isn’t.

    67. Obviously, the character of Lafayette was much more prominent in the series than in the book. He was really pretty much unlike the book character, and the actor playing him (Nelsan Ellis) has been spectacular in the role.

    69. I had a couple of weeks of paralysis after DEAD AND GONE came out. I hadn’t realized that I was a bigger target for cricicism than I’d ever been, and some of it was vicious. I took it very much to heart. I was deeply upset. I started second-guessing myself at every turn, and had a very hard time setting my course with DEAD IN THE FAMILY. That’s as close to writer’s block as I’ve gotten.

Yes, I’ve always enjoyed vampire literature.

    73. Picking a song is too hard for me. I’d have to think a long, long time about that. I don’t think I’d be a very good collaborator; there’s a reason most writers work by themselves.

    75. Yes, I think Nelsan Ellis is brilliant. I think that’s why the character lived. He should have been nominated for an Emmy. My favorite villain? Charles Twining was an interesting guy. He was forced into being a villain, and he did his duty as he saw it.

    76. No, picking the actors was a job for Alan and his casting people. I’m no expert. They can select the right actor for the right job. Alan did share a few of his thoughts with me, which of course I can’t share.

    78. Yes.

    80. Stephanie, which character? I’m very happy with the show.

    81. I wanted a wider readership, and I thought if I wrote a book with elements from lots of genres, I might attract more readers. It turns out I was right, luckily for me. And I had a great time doing it, which is even more important.

    82. The humor is absolutely intentional, of course. Telepathy was the worst thing I could wish on poor Sookie.

    83. I’m laughing out loud at the idea.

    84. All those things go into the small-town Louisiana setting, Lee. I love picking a little-explored area of the country and letting other people see it. I love writing about the supes because they’re human . . but they aren’t. They have a secret society.

    85. Steph B, Marianne was a piece of work. She was far more fleshed out than her brief appearance in my book, and she certainly wreaked havoc in poor Bon Temps.

    90. My grandmother’s best friend’s name was Sookie.

    91. I constructed the character of Sookie to do what I needed her to do to make the book the way I envisioned it. That’s the best I can explain it.

    92. The next Harper book will probably be the last.

No, it wasn’t hard to see the characters alive again in the show.

    93. Yes, Hunter will be in the next book. I’ve already written another Sookie short story, TWO BLONDS, that will appear in the anthology DEATH’S EXCELLENT VACATION next August.

    94. Yes, I always have ideas, Amanda.

    Hi Charlaine!!!
I fell in love with True Blood and was hesitant on reading the books while the show is airing because obviously as in so many cases the show/movies never match up to the books they are based on. I did not want to ruin the show by falling in love with the books. But I have a friend who reads the books and I tend to demand spoilers, that she often refuses to give me so I gave in and ordered your books just anxiously awaiting their arrival! Can’t wait see what’s really going to go down which leads me to my question/s…How do you feel the show compares to your books? Does it live up to your expectations? Is it hard to see the actors portray the characters that you have created or do you think they match up fairly well?
    Thanks so much,
    Nikki

    98. Bella, I’m not at all psychic. I really like to go to the places I write about, or at least to have been there. Sometimes, I have to rely on friends and pictures to help to me out.

    99. Yes, my success has affected me and my family in several ways.

    100. No, I’m not surprised. Bill has many good qualities. And to some extent, he was compelled to do many of the things he did that readers (and Sookie) DON’T like.

I voted for the favorite authors for the week. I do enjoy the Sookie Stackouse series. I’ve read all but the last. I’m one of the readers who is disappointed with how the series is so far away from the novel. I guess it’s entertaining in its own right. I just preferred my visualizations of the settings and characters to those depicted in the show. I wish Ms. Harris was more prolific in her writing. I hate waiting so long for the next in a series. However, since I enjoy the quality of her work, I don’t wish her to do anything to denigrate that, lol. Contradictory I know. I wondered if there will be a time when Sookie will become vampire. She seems to lose a lot with each novel.

I’m pretty sure CLUB DEAD will be out in large print, and also in hardback, in the coming year. I’d have to check with my agent on that.

    117. I wrote a straight science fiction novella, “The Britlingens go to Hell,” in MUST LOVE HELLHOUNDS. That was a lot of fun. There’s no telling what I’ll do next.

    119. Some positively, some negatively.

    121. No one from Jackson. She was a composite of all the unpleasant women I’ve known.

    124. I guess the first book was the most fun to write, though I’ve had great moments writing the subsequent books in Sookie’s history. It was fun to make up Mr. Cataliades.

    125. I don’t think he has to be either one thing or the other. Eric in the books is truly all about Eric. And he’s ruthless and has plenty of blood on his hands. That’s clearly in the books. But he’s also capable of good feelings, too. People (and vampires) aren’t all dark or all light. He never conceals his true character.

    126. They should have a backup plan. Even if they succeed as a writer, they may not be able to quit their day jobs for years. You have to support yourself somehow. Have an occupation! Or a fabulous, patient, spouse.

    127. Yes, I always wanted to be a writer. I had a golden opportunity when I married for the second time. My husband told me to stay home and write the book I’d always wanted to write. It had been such a struggle during my earlier life to try to write and hold a full-time job. I’ve been incredibly lucky.

    128. Yes, Michele will be in DEAD IN THE FAMILY.

    129. Sookie will never become a vampire.

but is he ever going to fully recollect what they had together?

But I know if they did, you couldn’t spoil it for us. But what are some of your thoughts on the two of them together? :)

Thanks so much for all of your time!

    130. Sookie, naturally, but I love to write Pam.

    132. Quinn will be in the novella that’s going to be included in the Sookie Companion next year.

    133. You’re very welcome.

134.For a couple of reasons, Shirley. The series is a travelling series, which sounded like a good idea when I conceived it, but turned out to be very labor-intensive. Also, I came to feel I’d written everything about Harper I had in me to write.

    135. Carol, thanks so much DragonCon was a real experience! A vacation? Honestly, it’s been so long since I had one I can’t imagine it. Two weeks without doing writing or writer-related stuff seems incredible to me. I’ve always wanted to go to Italy. And I’d like to go back to Alaska, which I only saw very briefly while my son was stationed there.

Oooh! one more question. There’s been a lot of speculation about Pam’s comment in Dead & Gone when she comments that Eric lives on in Sookie.
Will one of the future books give more information into what that means?

Again, thanks so much for writing. It’s been fun to read your comments :)

#1 Where did you come up with the idea of the character of Harper Connelly?

#2 Do you think TV series should follow book series exactly or just have the same general concept?

Hi Charlaine, I just wanted to say that i love all your books. I also loved the cameo appearance you did on True blood. Since your new book is titled All in the Family, are we going to see more family tie-in between the characters? Also not asking for too much details, but what happens with sookie and eric now that, according to vampire laws, sookie and eric are now married?

    Thanks

    148. People do get very nervous when they meet me, at least some of them. Every now and then a woman will start crying or go mute. I’m really non-threatening and very approachable, at least at the right time. There was a young lady who had Eric tattooed on her shoulder . . .

    149. Hi, Son! Good to see you here!

    150. Yes, he will.

    151. Harper was created out of my interest in lightning, which I still consider a magical force though I’ve read the scientific explanation a hundred times. I doubt any TV series could follow a book exactly, and I’m not sure it even ought to try.

Hi Charlaine, great interview. I’ve only begun to read your Sookie series, but I really enjoy them. I love your writing style. So many authors take up half a page just describing the staircase. I usually fade in & out when that happens. But you really hold my attention and I so relate to your humour. Any road, my question(s) are: How did you know you wanted to write? Was in just instinct or like a nagging “I just gotta do it” kind of a thing. Who was or is your biggest influence as far a writers go? Thanx for you time Charlaine,

I’m totally bummed I missed the chance to “chat” with Charlaine.

My questions were already asked in the interview itself and she unfortunately gave no leeway whatsoever! :: Cries! :: I just want to know who Sookie’s great-granddad was talking about in that last book!

    It’s driving me nuts!

Anyway lol, I love her work even before TrueBlood came to HBO.

    Hiya, Charlaine! :)
Sookie’s name sound so friendly and nice and proper… I was just wondering, is Sookie Stackhouse the first name that you thought of when you were naming her?

    Hi Charlaine,

What paranormal creatures do you have the least interest in writing about?

    Thanks!

    Hi Charlaine~

I love your Sookie books! I think that I am leaning more to Eric…but, hey that is just me. Do you find it easier to write your Sookie books or your mystery books? Do prefer one to the other.

I have already subscribed to the newsletter and I RSVP’ed.

Just want you to know how popular you are at our library. It is hard to keep the books on the shelf.
The especially like the Sookie series. We always have a waiting list when your new one comes out.
The biggest advantage working at the library - we get to read new books first.
