Hard-working and dedicated, Sonia Sotomayor decided to be a lawyer when she was just ten years old, because she was a fan of Perry Mason, a television show about an attorney that aired in the 1960’s. She worked hard in school, and was outspoken in college, daring to say or do things that women were not supposed to do or say. She went to law school at Yale, and did well, even though some people said she was only succeeding because she was Puerto Rican. After years of hard work as an attorney and a circuit court judge, she was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama.
I enjoyed reading Sonia Sotomayer: Women Who Broke the Rules, and appreciated her determination and diligence in following her dream. Aimed at first through fourth grade readers, this biography is interesting and provides a great deal of information without being difficult to read. The book is well-written and makes Justice Sotomayor seem approachable as a positive role model.
