Treadmill by Warren Adler

Treadmill by Warren AdlerJust when Jack Cooper thinks that everything is going his way, it all comes undone. Within the space of a month, he loses his job, his wife to another man, and his mother to illness. Dejected and alone, he focuses on one thing alone-–his daily workouts at the Bethesda Health Club. Not looking to make friends or find a girlfriend, Cooper is befriended by a mysterious man named Mike Parrish. Parrish is full of outrageous assertions, ones that Cooper’s not sure he even believes-right up until the day Parrish disappears without a trace.

Cooper is not your typical hero. He is broken and defeated and sometimes, he is a real idiot. But his tenacity and determination to find out what really happened to his one sort-of friend is what makes him hero material. Even though his journey starts with idle curiosity, before long, it is a compulsion that he cannot keep from indulging.

Treadmill is an interesting, if a bit far-fetched, mystery with more than a little political intrigue thrown in for good measure. Cooper never really knows if he is losing his mind or if he is really in danger from some unknown source. For me, this is the biggest draw to the story. Half the time he thinks he is overreacting and the other half, he is being shown that the threat is real.

The political conspiracy aspect was a little too over-the-top for my tastes, but the idea of it all was just crazy enough to be plausible in this day and age. One thing we have learned over the years is that people in power will do anything to remain in power, and this book furthers that assumption nicely. If you are looking for a different sort of political thriller that deals with the ordinary man, then Treadmill is a good choice for you.

About Aymee

I’m Aymee and I’ve had a love affair with the written word from a very young age. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, magazine, pamphlet, cookbook, restaurant menu or the back of a cereal box, if it’s in my possession long enough, I’m going to read it. The only thing I love more than reading is sharing my love of a good story with others. Although I’m firmly ensconced in the City of Sin, I’m a homebody who’d rather be baking cookies or digging in my garden rather than chasing the bright lights and excitement of the city.
