Whether you are a Trekkie or not, nearly everyone knows who Mr. Sulu is, but what we do not know is the man behind the character and all the things that shaped his life and made him into the person that he is. I will admit that I rarely watched the original series, although I did love the movies as a kid. That said, I have long been fascinated with all the characters that inhabited that mythical starship simply because they have always been such a visible part of our culture.
Even though I had a passing knowledge of Mr. Takei before reading this book, I was completely taken by surprise with the complexity of the man I began to read about. That he spent time in an internment camp during World War II was a shock to me. Listening to him retell stories about his early years living behind a barbed wire fence both appalled and inspired me. He was a child being held prisoner and he found it to be a great adventure.
George’s parents had an incredible amount of dedication and drive. Their primary goal was to give their children the American Dream by providing the best future for them as they could. It was truly heartwarming to feel the love and admiration in his words anytime he spoke of his parents, even when he did not exactly agree with their philosophies, he still respected their opinions. Approximately one-third of the way into this autobiography, I realized it was not any wonder he achieved exactly what he had. Growing up with that kind of support does amazing things for a person.
Although the main attraction to this book was the link to Star Trek, I found myself fully invested long before we even touched on the subject of the ground-breaking science fiction classic. We tend to forget that our favorite actors are more than the roles they play-they are human, as well.
Mr. Takei has had many roles, both fictional and real, outside of Mr. Sulu. He has been on Broadway, and in television and movies. He has also had political aspirations and has made a difference in the lives of the people in his community. He is a well-rounded person who is an American, but not one who has lost touch with his roots, either.
Overall, I was surprised by the depth of emotion and character I found within the pages of To The Stars and have found a much greater appreciation for the man who loves to make us laugh on the Internet.
