Lucy Upton has been considered “on the shelf” by the ton for a few years. She gladly holds the title of wallflower, since she is forthright and outspoken and tends to intimidate the men who might consider her a prospect. When her good friend, Cassandra, asks for her help in deterring a rather determined duke’s interest, Lucy relishes the challenge. But, despite their best-laid plans, the duke will not be dissuaded. Lucy has not ever had such a formidable foe. But, the duke made a deathbed promise that he will marry Cassandra and take care of her. He will not even let his attraction to the enticing Miss Upton get in the way.
I loved The Unexpected Duchess, to the point that I did not want to put it down. Lucy is a fascinating character. She is intelligent and not ashamed of the fact that she is a spinster. She is also loyal to her friends and would do anything within her power to help them, which is why she does not hesitate when Cassandra asks for her help. But, they all have an agreement to help each other when it comes to the ways of love, and Cassandra wants Lucy to find happiness if at all possible.
Derek Hunt, the Duke, has just returned from the war. He is loyal to his friends, too. But, his attraction to Lucy cannot be denied. They are both intriguing and I loved reading their story. The Unexpected Duchess is a great romance and I highly recommend it if you enjoy the historical genre. I look forward to more books from Ms. Bowman, and I cannot wait to read her next book in The Playful Brides series.
