The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance by Delilah S. Dawson

The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance by Delilah S. DawsonFrannie Pleasance comes across many odd individuals and situations in her line of work as proprietor of the Needful Creatures pet store (dealing in live animals, not clockworks), but she does not typically stumble upon unconscious men lying in the street-especially not any so closely resembling her dead brother. Her curiosity piqued, Frannie prods the man with her toe, at which time he jumps up and then immediately gets sick. When some approaching blud rats make the two realize they need to be moving on, Frannie tells the man to come back to the shop with her, offering him a room for a price. Her prospective lodger introduces himself as Casper Sterling, and insists on doing chores to pay his way until he can replace his stolen money.

Over the course of the day, Frannie and Casper become acquainted, and she learns the true identity of her lodger: the Maestro, a renowned musician. That evening Frannie gets awakened to her room being on fire. When the Fire Brigade arrives, Frannie discovers two things: she finds the big burly Scotsman firefighter very intriguing, and the fire was started by magic. Aside from seeking to learn who seems to be trying to kill her, Frannie must also ensure that no one finds out the secret of her closet…

The captivating Frannie and her pets, along with her mysterious lodger and formidable fireman, provide an entertaining and very welcome return to the land of Sang. This terrific second novella in the Blud series contains all of Dawson’s trademarks: spot-on humor, realistic romance, and world-building that crackles with its intense imagery. One truly frightening scene (which shall not get spoiled here) demonstrates clearly the dangers of Sang. The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance serves to whet the appetites of those anxiously awaiting book two in the series, Wicked As She Wants (4-30-13), or to introduce the uninitiated to the author’s wildly fascinating world.
