Seventeen-year-old Jacquelina Garza was back on the streets after running away from the halfway house where she had been living. Jacqi had been a troubled child ever since her abduction at age eight, when she disappeared for three days, held by a child molester in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Concerned about Jacqi, the woman who ran the halfway house asked a friend, Phelan Tierney, to track Jacqi down and bring her back to Winchinchala House before the courts found out she was missing. Jacqi was making plans of her own, to go to Visalia with Fireman Mike, a client of hers, but when Mike is beaten and murdered in front of her, she finds herself back under the scrutiny of police and afraid of her family, especially her mother’s boyfriend, tracking her down.
Phelan Tierney, former attorney and part-time tutor at Winchinchala House, was impressed with Jacqi’s intelligence as she studied for her GED. When Lonnie asked him to find Jacqi, he agreed, but had no idea it would lead him into a murder investigation and put his life at risk. Still grieving the loss of his wife from cancer two years earlier, Phelan was slowly building a relationship with an oncology nurse, Cassidy, who felt his need to find Jacqi was bordering on obsession, and she did not approve.
Jacqi is truly a strong woman who has a lot to deal with, starting with her dysfunctional family life, the abduction, the subsequent trial, and her acting out as a teenager, all of which led her to the point of being with Mike when he was murdered. Phelan wants to help, but even he finds the situation to be overwhelming, and yet he does not give up on Jacqi. The Mercy of the Night was a compelling story that I found interesting and exciting, with plenty of intrigue and hidden agendas, and I enjoyed it very much.
