The Magic of Lavender by Cate Masters

Jocelyn Gibson is ready to move on with her life. After losing her husband John, she is ready to work on her dream, running a Bed and Breakfast where her family’s lavender recipes are the draw, but just the recipes. There are other magical aspects of her family heritage she left behind long ago and does not want to fall back into. She has found an amazing house, but there is much work to be done. Along with all of the rehab and hard work getting The Lavender Inn ready for guests, Jocelyn is fighting her attraction to the local vet, Eric Hendricks. He is too young, bad with people, and like Jocelyn still mourning the loss of his wife.

Eric is a wonderful vet but does not get along with people so well. Ever since he lost his wife, he has not wanted to get close to another person-until he meets Jocelyn, the captivating new owner of the Lavender Inn. There is an undeniable attraction between the two, but there are strange things happening to Eric and Jocelyn may be at the center of it.

The Magic of Lavender is a really interesting read. Master’s has created a curious mix of Greek mythology and the Fae tradition that is fascinating.

Jocelyn and Eric make a nice couple and one of my favorite things about them is that they are older and have real life problems. Jocelyn has a college-age son, a full life, friends and family. She is hard working, genuine, and sincere. Both she and Eric are trying to get past personal tragedies and connect on so many different levels. The development of their romance is incredibly realistic-this book takes place over more than one year. Both characters are complex and well-developed.

Because The Magic of Lavender takes place over more than a year, it can feel a bit long at points and then a bit frenetic. You are just seeing the big moments, not the in-between quiet moments. The climax happens at an awkward place in the story — there are still quite a few pages left after the big confrontation, so the last fifth of the book feels like a long epilogue. Joceyln’s actions in those pages do not make much sense to me. It feels at odds with her development over most of the book, but by the end everything comes together so I can overlook that issue.

The Magic of Lavender is a fun introduction to a world where the Greek Gods still walk, a person’s soul is currency, and there is magic to found in nature. While I was not fond of the pacing there is something captivating about this story that made it difficult for this reviewer to put this book down.

About KristinD

Kristin is loving wife and doggie mom with a serious book addiction. When she is not in the kitchen whipping up a tasty confection (or cocktail) she can usually be found on the couch with her nose in a book. And she really did not hear what her husband just said to her, never mind that she responded… he should know better, she was reading. Her favorite books to read feature vampires, fae, & Gods of any pantheon (oh my!) but she has been known to pick up some pretty heavy philosophical tomes, funny memoirs, and scientific gobblygook. She also has a soft spot in her heart for good high fantasy. She fell in love with Anne Rice at far to young of an age and still has not found her way to NOLA! Kristin also spends time as a foster mom for a herding breed dog rescue in Illinois, indulging her husbands’ “silly” hobby of import/vintage video gaming, and spending as much time as she can with various members of her ridiculously large family. Somehow she manages to work full time in insurance sales but would much rather be having a kitchen dance party.
