Solar flares have hit the earth, killing most of the population. What is left of humanity has gathered together in small communities, just trying to survive. Mark and Trina were in school together, riding the subway home when the flares hit. They were saved by Alec, an old former soldier, and have been together ever since.
Their community is attacked by a Berg, which is a huge airship. They are used to drop off supplies to the larger settlements, but here it is, back open and men firing darts at milling people. Whoever does not die outright becomes ill. And contagious. The substance is turning people crazy and filling them with rage, making them do terrible things to each other.
The gang decides to follow the trail of the Berg back to its origin, hoping to find out what is going on, and also a cure. They find a small girl named Deedee along the way. She had been shot with a dart, but is immune. Her community is trying to kill her since they have all turned crazy, so the gang has to save her while keeping away from the crazy people. They face ever-growing dangers with the last of humanity turning savage. They must find the cause of all this and protect Deedee because she is special.
James Dashner has given us a great look at what happened prior to the Maze Runner: the beginning of Wicked, The Cranks, and the fall of what was left of humanity. The characters work well together, and I cared about what was happening to them. The horrors that the crazy people are doing to others is sometimes terrible to read about, but it gives depth to the disease. The Kill Order can be read before or after The Maze Runner series.
