Welcome to the Isle of the Lost: the place where all of the fairy-tale villains have been banished. On an isolated island far away from the kingdom of Auradon, the inhabitants are forced to live inside a dome which blocks all magic. Malificent rules the island and is determined that one day she will have her revenge.
When a disturbance in the dome causes a little bit of magic to return, Malificent sends her teenaged daughter, Mal, on a quest to find her lost scepter, the root of all her evil power. Accompanied by Carlos (Cruella DeVille’s son), Jay (Jafar’s son) and Evie (Snow White’s evil stepmother’s daughter), Mal is determined to make her mother proud and escape the Isle of the Lost once and for all. Dreams of Auradon and a certain teenage boy have been filling her sleep and she longs to see the kingdom for herself.
In Auradon, Prince Ben, son of King Beast and Queen Beauty, has also been dreaming about a beautiful purple-haired teenaged girl. Unsure about his future as King of Auradon and his “perfect” life, he knows that there is more to discover outside the confines of the kingdom.
The Isle of the Lost was inspired by the upcoming Disney movie “The Descendants” which premieres this summer. Melissa De La Cruz does an amazing job of introducing us to this new universe of the children of the Disney characters that we have all come to know and love. Mal’s journey becomes not only a quest to prove her worth to her mother, but a valuable lesson in friendship and the discovery that maybe, in this new generation of villains, some good has mixed in with the bad.
