Ten years after leaving home at sixteen when her father died, Jesse Davison returns to take possession of the house she grew up in. However, Jesse finds herself less than pleased with the rep there to meet her: Marsh, town ladies man. During their very brief meeting, after Marsh drops the bombshell that her former friend, Will, has returned, Jesse receives a phone call from her supernatural employer, The Dream Merchant, telling her that she has a task.
Jesse manages to sneak away and go to the cemetery to meet the woman she needs to “read” in order to fulfill her obligation. By touching the young widowed mother, Jesse sees an unsettling scene, assuming that the resulting dream provided for the woman will resemble her own-a revenge fantasy about the death of her father. Jesse’s work situation gets complicated by an accident involving a bottle containing her dream, and chaos ensues when this problem bleeds over into other parts of her life.
This excellent novella with its unique premise holds the reader riveted throughout the fast-paced and smoothly-flowing narrative. Schafer shines when creating her shadowy worlds, and The Dream Runner demonstrates her ability even in the shorter form-providing just enough information to allow us to follow the story, but with a tinge of unease when not knowing what to expect next. Jesse’s backstory gets revealed over the course of the tale, but the explanation of how her involvement with the Dream Merchant began remains a bit of mystery which hopefully gets explored in book two, The Dream Thief . This reviewer very much looks forward to finding out.
