Arcadia, or Cadie as her friends call her, is 18 years old and she is sick of her life. Living in a small town, nothing ever happens. After losing her mother to cancer, Cadie has become mother to her little brother Daniel. She loves Daniel but she wants to be a normal teenager. So when she meets two very cute guys at a a party at a party who are on a road trip, she jumps at the opportunity to go along with them. She is instantly attracted to the older guy, Noah, and the feeling is mutual. Noah’s cousin, Matt, the other cute guy, seems attracted to her friend Lindsay and Lindsay agrees to go along too but backs out at the last minute via text message. The three set off with their ultimate destination being Flamingo, Florida, a deserted town whose residents were relocated after a hurricane. But Cadie soon finds out that Lindsay never made it home and her road trip takes an unexpected and dangerous turn. One of the cousins is hiding something and it could kill her.
Trish Doller is a new author to me and while I enjoyed The Devil You Know, there were things that I was not a fan of. As the mother of two teenage girls, it was disturbing to me that the heroine of the story who, at first seemed so responsible, would take off with two strangers she had just met. I am not saying this was something I would not have done at 18 but I feel like the world is different today and, while she learned a very hard lesson in the end, with the romance between her and the older cousin, that lesson might not be enough to discourage impressionable teenagers reading the book to want to take off on their own adventures. With that being said though, I though the characters were very well-developed and Cadie, although she made some very poor choices, was a likeable heroine. The ending was a bit predictable but it was still overall a good story and will definitely keep the reader completely engaged and entertained.
