Swerve by Vicki Pettersson

Swerve by Vicki PetterssonWhen Kristine Rush and her fiancé Daniel set out from Las Vegas for a holiday trip to Lake Arrowhead, California, it starts out like any other trip. Long stretches of hot, sun baked road lay ahead of them. But so does something unexpected. Something terrifying. Something that was going to change their lives forever.

Before I ever cracked the cover of Swerve, it had a lot going for it. It’s written by Vicki Petterssen, an amazing author. It’s also a dark, psychological thriller, a genre I love to read. Lastly, it’s set on that deserted stretch of highway between the town I’ve grown up in and a place I’ve never been. This last point is what really drew me in because nothing draws me into a story more than when I truly know the area it’s taking place. And that piece of road? I know it so very, very well.

Ms. Petterssen doesn’t waste any time in getting things started, either. Two chapters in and Daniel is abducted from a rest stop, sending Kristine on a mad chase to save him from the unknown before it’s too late. From that moment forward, Swerve is a non-stop, heart-pounding race to the finish line. Will she make it in time to rescue her husband to be, or will she be too late? At times, you honestly believe it could go either way.

Kristine Rush is an amazing mother and an excellent nurse, despite her very messed up childhood in Tonopah, NV. The flashbacks between her current situation and that of her childhood only add to make the tension more palpable. They also give you more confidence in her ability to win this insane game someone is playing with her because you know what she’s gotten away from before. If she can get out of that, how can she not make it through this?

In the end, you are taken on such a wild ride that you’re left not knowing which end is up. Swerve has so many unexpected twists and turns that I found myself surprised in practically every chapter. An intense, emotional and thrilling journey through the Nevada desert is what Swerve gives you. For being her first psychological thriller, Ms. Petterssen certainly delivers a dark, devious, and terrifying novel.

About Aymee

I’m Aymee and I’ve had a love affair with the written word from a very young age. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, magazine, pamphlet, cookbook, restaurant menu or the back of a cereal box, if it’s in my possession long enough, I’m going to read it. The only thing I love more than reading is sharing my love of a good story with others. Although I’m firmly ensconced in the City of Sin, I’m a homebody who’d rather be baking cookies or digging in my garden rather than chasing the bright lights and excitement of the city.
