Suddenly One Summer by Julie James

Suddenly One Summer (Novel) by Julie JamesVictoria Slade, a high-powered divorce attorney, had just finished celebrating a win with her associates when her townhome was broken into, forcing Victoria to hide in her closet and call 911. While waiting for the police to arrive, Victoria was suddenly thrust back to her childhood and had her first-ever panic attack, blacking out while hiding behind her clothes hamper.

Too afraid to remain in the townhome, Victoria purchased another condo, but had to rent another place for the summer, until her condo would be ready. Feeling lucky to find a place in a safe neighborhood, Victoria goes out with her friends and notices a hot and sexy man looking at her, but she loses interest when he and his two friends join a bachelorette party in progress in the back of the bar.

Returning to the rental, Victoria sets the alarm and is looking forward to a quiet night, and is startled when her next door neighbor seems to be having a party, complete with penis pops and the thump of the headboard. To add insult to injury, the neighbor also has a fondness for early morning home repair, cutting into the shared wall and using a drill.

Ford Dixon, investigative reporter, is not impressed with his new neighbor’s attitude, though he recognizes her as the beautiful woman from the bar. After Ford’s sister turns up on the doorstep crying, Victoria agrees to help Nicole, who recently had a baby, locate the baby’s father for child support. Ford’s talents at locating people and Victoria’s strengths at litigation make an excellent team in tracking down Peter Sutter.

Victoria seems strong and confident, but in reality is very concerned with how she appears to others, which is why she begins therapy in order to calm the panic attacks. Ford’s loyalty towards his family is admirable and seeing Ford and Victoria work together, using different schemes to get a picture of Peter so Nicole can identify him, makes for a fun read. I enjoyed Suddenly One Summer and the romance that develops between Victoria and Ford, and appreciated the amount of trust they both demonstrated in order to make their relationship work.

About Mary

My name is Mary, and I’m a serious book junkie, with a large personal collection of reading material. I’m fascinated by ghosts, the paranormal, and true crime stories. I love discovering the possibilities in the next world and am curious about the reasons people do what they do in this one. I’ve been reading since the age of 3, and always have a book or two or three going. I’m an elementary school substitute teacher, and I always have a book or two in my “bag of tricks”. My new favorite is “Frog in a Bog”. My husband and daughter do not share my passion for books, and secretly think I’ve gone over the top with my collecting and reading habits, but I firmly believe there are worse habits I could have!
