Meredith Preston fled to her mother’s home on Sanctuary Island once she discovered she was pregnant, knowing the baby’s father was not likely to be supportive. She and her mother, Jo, were trying to develop an equine therapy ranch, and because of that, were spending a great deal of time with the island’s only veterinarian, Ben Fairfax. Ben became closer to the family late one night when he helped Merry deliver her son, Alex.
Ben Fairfax had led an unhappy life, and enjoyed the quiet he found on Sanctuary Island. He felt a great closeness to Alex, since he had delivered him, and Merry had chosen Ben’s middle name to name her son. Recognizing that Merry was having some difficulty dealing with her mother’s over-involvement with Alex, and being secretly in love with her, Ben proposes marriage to Merry-–and is stunned when she accepts.
I appreciated Merry’s struggles as a single mother, having spent several years in that category, and I applauded her strength in carving out a life for herself and her son. Ben’s lack of tact and his general grumpiness sometimes worked against him, but Merry was able to see behind the façade to the genuinely caring man hidden beneath. Shoreline Drive was a sweet story, full of romance and family ties, and is one I enjoyed very much.
