More than 3,200 years ago, the King of Dwarfs called a meeting of his savants because he believed their doomsday was fast approaching. He predicted that the world they knew would cease to exist and the dwarves along with it. However, the three Fate Goddesses ordered the King to carry out an important mission. One dwarf must be pricked with the Sleeping Thorn and hidden in a secret cave somewhere on Earth until the designated time comes to be released from slumber. His mission will be to research and record the history of the earth and the extinction of the Era of the Gods.
It is clear that Rogiers is a Historian who put a tremendous amount of research into this story and I completely respect his work. However, I squeaked by in History so this was a really tough read for me. I was colossally relieved each time the story reverted back to the story of the “author,” our unnamed dwarf. His history and current day views were very entertaining in spite of the fact that he was incredibly demeaning and insulting to the whole human race.
The idea behind the story is unique and my love for Greek mythology helped me plod along. There were many interesting and educational bits that I picked up on but in its entirety, it was far too heavy for me. I can normally burn through a story this size in two nights with a full day of work behind me but it took three weeks for me to finish this. I think Message from a Hidden Past would be a treasure for history buffs, though, and would highly recommend them to add this to their list.
