Heart of a Lion by Stephen Zimmer

Heart of a Lion by Stephen ZimmerRayden is among the bravest and fiercest warriors from the North, and she is a woman. She is fearless with her ax and sword, never failing to protect those she encounters who cannot fend for themselves. Intent on returning to her homeland, Rayden’s friend, Ammanus, finds a caravan with camels they can join that is headed North.

However, trouble seems to be lurking around every corner. There are monsters on two legs, monsters with wings and even monsters of the hairy, multi-legged variety. Along the way, she discovers a young boy about to be sacrificed and she rushes in to save him. Although they manage to escape, separated from Ammanus, Rayden and the boy begin a long and treacherous journey together. Rayden must negotiate safe passage throughout their travels, which sometimes means she must barter with old rivals.

Zimmer has a vibrant imagination and paints some of the most evil villains and extraordinary monsters I have ever heard described. His descriptions of Rayden’s exploits range from abhorrent to eloquent. I love Rayden’s strength, fearlessness and her dedication to those she cares for.

The reason I did not give Heart of a Lion a higher rating is because the conversations between the characters sometimes felt a little stilted to me. Outside of that, I enjoyed this awesome adventure and am looking forward to following Rayden into her next battle.

About AJ

Blessed by parents who read to her in the womb, AJ learned to read by the age of 3. She now has an entire room dedicated to reading, with shelves of books stacked to the ceiling, in addition to a stack of books in every room. Her obsession with the written word eventually developed into the desire to write her own stories. Someone saw talent in her and she found work as a Writer/Editor. It was pure heaven. Her husband, who rarely read a book, caught the fever and is now engrossed in another series of books. Passing on the tradition of reading to her child in the womb, her daughter now sleeps in a room with stacks of books surrounding her and just won an award for logging the most reading time in a school with over 500 students.
