Empire of Night by Justin Somper

Vampirates: Empire of Night by Justin SomperGrace and Connor Tempest are still reeling from the discovery that not only are they dhampirs, (half-vampire/half-human), but also their father is Sidorio, self-proclaimed king of the Vampirates. When both are invited to spend time with their father, their reply to the invitation is an emphatic no. But when their superiors hear of this, they realize that this is the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the Vampirates and find out exactly what they are planning.

Grace goes to stay onboard The Vagabond, the ship captained by her stepmother, Lady Lola Lockwood, while Connor visits The Blood Captain Sidorio’s ship. Sidorio may genuinely want to get to know his children, but Lola has other plans for them. Her chef provides a veritable feast for the Tempest twins at every meal, but they are unaware that they are being fed human blood in order to awaken their blood hunger. Lola uses some of her crew to become close friends with Grace and a dashing young vampirate to seduce her. Sidorio plays on Connor’s feelings of no longer fitting in among the mortal world. Before long, the Tempest twins begin to be drawn to the darker half of their dual natures, and their old friends fear they may lose them forever.

Empire of Night is 5th installment in the Vampirates series, author Justin Somper has outdone himself. Favorite characters continue to delight and the introduction of several new characters hint at possible future plot developments for the series. While this seems to be the end of the line for a couple of characters, in the Vampirate world, people don’t seem to stay dead for very long. Climb aboard and brace yourself for a journey filled with twists and turns as we sail toward #6. If it is even half as emotional and action-packed as Empire of Night, you’re going to need a life vest.

About Lori

For Lori, being an avid reader was inevitable as the daughter of two English Lit majors. It also didn’t hurt that her Grandmother was a children’s librarian so there were always plenty of books in the house. When she is not reading, she can be found performing in and choreographing musicals for local theater groups. She works full-time for the Federal government and juggles that, being a wife and mother, the theater and still finds time to read on a daily basis. She is rarely without a book in her purse and her husband loves to tell people about the time she pulled out a book and read at an NHL game.
