When this excellent novel begins, Anya Kalinczyk arrives at a haunted house to aid the team she sometimes works with, the Detroit Area Ghost Researchers, or DAGR. After a harrowing confrontation with flying debris, Anya utilizes her unique skill as a Lantern – she essentially sucks spirits into a cavity in her chest, at which point they dissipate and appear to be gone for good. Her protector, a fire elemental named Sparky, though invisible to others, most of the time inhabits a salamander torq necklace that Anya always wears. Very early the next morning, Anya receives a phone call that requires her to appear for her daytime job as an arson investigator. In addition to the fire seeming to be part of a pattern, a firefighter has been seriously injured.

Fire in the Sky by Michelle Hasker
Fire in the Sky was an interesting read in a few ways. Selena and Kyden are fire dragons, but Selena has no idea; she was abandoned at birth. Apparently, Kyden knows she is his Fire Companion but needs her to discover her true self before he can fully claim her. Selena is no stranger to the paranormal; she has a were-panther friend, so the idea that her boss is a dragon is really no surprise. The fantasy scenes Selena had were a secret little treat to read, but I wished she didn’t complain about herself so much or contradict Kyden’s interest. Read More »

So I dream about this world of Inside. The dream includes characters, the main protagonist, her BFF, and the bad guys. The world—a metal cube—is crammed full with people segregated by levels and includes a complex network of pipes. My main girl, Trella is being chased as she searches for a way out of this world. The dream even provided me with a few twists that I didn’t see coming. Nice dream. The best. It gave me enough information to write a whole novel. Read More »

The Chosen One by Cynthia Vespia

This novel is told in a direct, first person point of view. The words are not lyrical; the details not crystalline. This, however, adds to the story rather than detract from it. Costa is rough around the edges, he is on the verge of becoming a man and beaten down by his master. The words that spring from him are simple, to the point; they are warrior words. Read More »

My First Dragon
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t think too much about dragons before I decided to write a book about them. Don’t get me wrong, I think dragons are cool. I love movies like Reign of Fire, and I’m one of the five people who saw D-War in the theater. But they’re almost so ubiquitous I didn’t think of them much. They’re the emblem of stereotypical fantasy, there’ve been hundreds of novels that feature them, from The Hobbit to the Dragonlance series to the Pern books to Eragon. I didn’t think much about dragons because lots of other people were doing it for me.
