If the End Fits…the Smallville Series Finale
Despite my intentions, I was unable to watch the finale in my motel room while on an out-of-town trip. I had my fingers crossed that the DVR would cooperate, because, as I told my husband, it wasn’t a season finale, it was a series finale. We have both watched the show for the whole ten years it has been on, and have enjoyed it immensely. Luckily, no power outages occurred and we got to sit in the comfort of our own living room to watch this terrific and satisfying ending to a great series.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites – Blood and Magic: Being Human (BBC) and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Being Human, Season 3, BBC America
**If you have not watched the finale of Season 3, do not read this. SPOILER ALERT
As much as I truly love this show, I sometimes took issue with Season 3. I will address those situations first.
1.) Mitchell and the Boxcar 20 murders which happened at the end of Season 2 — I did not ever feel that was an appropriate response on his part. His reaction to betrayal felt a bit too extreme to me. If he had only killed the coroner, that would have been more plausible to me.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Catching Flies: Jaw-dropping Endings on Fringe and Smallville
Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox
I’m not sure where to begin, considering everything that happened in this exciting and surprising finale. Let me start by saying I think the episode really delivered – it did everything we could expect from a show that has been full of twists and turns this season.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - You Never Know Where You May Wake Up: Time Jumps in Fringe and Smallville
Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox (Carol)
I must say that I enjoyed this whole episode, but the final scene blew me away – I did not expect that. When I am watching a genre show (or any show, really) what I most appreciate is being surprised. Now, the surprise needs to make sense in the context of the show and not come from so far out in left field that there doesn’t seem to be any possible way it could fit, but I really enjoy when something happens that I didn’t see coming.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Two for the Price of One: Here and There on Fringe
Fringe, Friday 9:00, Fox (Carol)
How fun was it to move back and forth between universes in this episode?
I find it interesting that except for Walternate and his evil minion, the alt-verse characters are all completely sympathetic at this point. Fauxlivia was willing to risk herself to avert catastrophe (and save Peter, one would assume), though when we first met her, she was concerned with her mission only. Read More »
Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Are We Where We Think We Are? Inner Worlds and Other Worlds on Fringe and Smallville, and the Season Finale of Being Human
Fringe, Friday 9:00 p.m., Fox (Carol)
Well, watchers, our show came back with a bang, huh? I mean, good grief – we had cartoon zombies! And Broyles smiled!
This trippy (no pun intended, really) episode managed to continue the show’s process of delving into characters while furthering along the overall arc. We already know that Peter is crucial to Walternate’s plans, but I believe that Olivia may be the key for our side. And with the two of them working together, perhaps disaster will be averted. How, I’m not sure, but I believe they will both play a part. Your thoughts?

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Another World, Another Life: Fringe, Merlin and Being Human

Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox (Carol)
First, I want to mention the good news: we did it, watchers — Fringe has been renewed for next season! Thank goodness!
Wow, what an episode this week! I’m not sure where to start! Of course, we have established that most of us have great love for the alt-verse, so a return visit there is always welcome (and not just because we get to see Charlie). I love the way the writers and producers have captured the feel of a slightly post-apocalyptic version of our own world, in such a way that it feels believable.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - I Want You Back (From the Dead): Being Human, Fringe and Merlin
Being Human, Monday 9:00 EST, SyFy
“I Want You Back (From the Dead)”
This episode, along with last week’s (“Children Shouldn’t Play With Undead Things”), broke my heart, and I’m pretty sure it was supposed to. Bernie was a sweet character and I was really hoping that he’d continue to play a part as a human for the household to interact with, as well as his mother, once she warmed back up to Aidan. This episode shot down that hope, and I was a little bummed about it.

Being Human, Monday 9:00 EST, SyFy (Jennifer)
Episode 1.7, “I See Your True Colors and That’s Why I Hate You”
Being Human returns in what may well be its best episode yet, moving the setting from the cozy Boston apartment for the majority of the episode and pulling its characters to Josh’s family home in the rural countryside. Josh’s decision to grapple with the vampire faction continues to cause problems for him as he deals with the shockwaves of his choice through to this episode.
Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Being Human, Fringe and Being Human BBC
Being Human, Saturday, 9:00 EST, BBC America (Carol)
Season Three began for us here last week, and I finally got to watch the first episode. First of all, thank goodness they got Annie back. We knew they would, as she is essential to the story, but I was hoping they would not drag out the purgatory angle for too long and was very pleased with how it was all handled.

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Decisions, Comparisons, and Preferences: Fringe and Being Human
Fringe, Friday 9:00 EST, Fox (Carol)
So, it looks as though Olivia and Peter may have come to an understanding, which, as we can imagine, will likely combust after Faulivia’s news gets around.
I liked the story of the episode, of the two people from either side connecting over the loss of one another – or at least so they thought. That was pretty creepy when the older woman was seeing the “ghost” and all of the walls and things around her were disintegrating. The idea that love could be both a disrupting force as well as the element for healing a rift in the boundary between worlds was an intriguing one, and I have a feeling we may see this concept again in the show. What is your take on this?

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Seeing Double: Being Human and Fringe
Being Human, Monday 9:00 EST, SyFy (Carol)
Episode four of this show has begun to hit its stride in balancing the individual stories of all three characters with their connections to one another. They each seek to find a way to live with what they are as supernatural beings and still be a part of the world around them. This is, of course, the point of the show, as well as that of the one it is based upon, the original BBC version. Both shows actually demonstrate what the best urban fantasy and paranormal romance seek to express: using the metaphor of the supernatural to explore how it feels to be different and outside what we perceive as the norm.

* Be aware, folks – there are some major spoilers here. Do not read this if you have not yet seen this past week’s episode yet.*
Good grief, Watchers – Peter? What the heck is going on with the poor guy? What do you think of Walter’s theory about contact with the machine? I guess they would have to come up with some reason why Peter would act so out of character, and from that perspective, I suppose it makes sense. Your thoughts?

Bitten by Books Screen Bites - Hidden Magic: Merlin and The Cape
Merlin, Friday 10:00 p.m., SyFy (Carol)
Well, folks, our Morganna has finally gone off the deep end. Those familiar with the stories and legends knew this would happen eventually, given her character in those places, but I was not sure how the writers and producers were going to have the change occur. Though it kind of seems to the viewer that the big turnaround was quick, I think that we are supposed to be on board with the Morganna’s transformation over the year she was gone and in Morgause’s company, which, admittedly, would drive anyone slightly insane.

Merlin, Friday, 10:00 p.m., SyFy (Carol)
I have been watching this show since it first aired on NBC over the summer a couple of years ago, and was very glad when SyFy picked it up as I figured it would last longer. Those who have been watching know it is a British show that we get over here after it has already aired there. I thought this episode was a great way to begin the new season.
