Beach Patrol (Playa Escondida) By Michelle MooreDan is in Playa Escondida, hoping to tag a sea turtle for his thesis as an Oceanography student. His first encounter with Jay, the lifeguard, is awkward at best. After some strange and frightening events, Dan turns to Jay for help to make sense of what is happening to him. Fortunately, Jay has some experience with these matters thanks to a 400 year old curse on his family. Jay quickly enlists the help of two other friends who have some expertise in this situation and the dangerous and bizarre adventure begins.

This was nothing like the story I was expecting. Between the title and the cute sea turtle on the cover, I was expecting a sweet, Summer story about going out on a Beach Patrol, finding sea turtles and swimming in the surf. This was nothing like that. It’s essentially a ghost story that everyone in this sleepy little town seems to know and accept. I started getting to the creepy part when it was late and I was alone, so the story got a little uncomfortable for me and I had to put it down until morning light. When I picked it back up, it wasn’t as scary as it started out. It was kinda like hearing the eerie music in the background where you expect to see the slasher, but no one actually jumps out and the killer just stays in the shadows. I liked the premise of the story but just as it was starting to drag me in, it started to feel rushed and there were too many unanswered questions in the end for me. There is also a bit of unexpected romance that caught me totally by surprise but that became the focus of the story so it did end on a good note. Overall, I can recommend this as a quick read for someone who likes a bit of a scare that isn’t over the top.

About AJ

Blessed by parents who read to her in the womb, AJ learned to read by the age of 3. She now has an entire room dedicated to reading, with shelves of books stacked to the ceiling, in addition to a stack of books in every room. Her obsession with the written word eventually developed into the desire to write her own stories. Someone saw talent in her and she found work as a Writer/Editor. It was pure heaven. Her husband, who rarely read a book, caught the fever and is now engrossed in another series of books. Passing on the tradition of reading to her child in the womb, her daughter now sleeps in a room with stacks of books surrounding her and just won an award for logging the most reading time in a school with over 500 students.
