Audio Review: Retribution by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Retribution (Dark-Hunter Novels) by Sherrilyn KenyonOrphaned at a young age after a man who called himself friend murdered her parents, Abigail Yager was brought up by a family who never let her forget who was responsible and gave her the means to someday take revenge on his actions. Living as a sister in a family of apolytes, she was willing to do anything to help them take out the Dark Hunters and rid the world of their evil, including agreeing to something that would give her the added strength to fight and win. Captured by the man she vowed revenge on, she was not prepared for the desire he stirred within her, nor the catastrophic results to her last kill — a kill that might not only bring on the end of the world but one that turned her own world upside-down when she realized that she was the one doing the betraying. There was only one person in the world who still believed in her: Sundown Brady.

Jess Brady had wanted one thing when he felt the bullet hit his back and he turned to see the man he called friend walk up and take another shot: killing him and then going in the church where his bride awaited him. Artemis gave him that chance, but not before the man raped his bride and set in motion something that would take decades to reveal a destiny that would not be denied him. Called to deal with a Daimon uprising, he was shocked to see the one responsible for killing his friends and fellow Dark Hunters was the last living person that resulted in that betrayal. Despite the fact that her actions might have started an upheaval that could end the world, Jess “Sundown” Brady could not keep away from the sexy vixen and that connection might be the only thing that saves them all.

I do not usually listen to a lot of audio books, primarily because I can read faster than the narrator does, leaving me more time to pick up another book. Holter Graham, narrator for the Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is one exception to the rule. His voice inflects so much more into the characters than you would expect and you get wrapped up in the story even more. Retribution is another great read, but compared to the previous stories it left me a little bereft. I love Sundown, and although it took quite a while for me to warm up to Abigail, her character is another great one in this series. I do wish, though, that the story gave them more time to get to know each other one on one instead of just the quick glimpses of romantic interludes between them as they race to save the world from the various attacks her actions set in motion. I understand her direction in this book, prepping the reader for Time Untime, but with that said I felt like there was more that could have been said between them about the connection that binds them together. The Buffalo and the Butterfly have a destiny and I am a bit disappointed that we never got to delve deeper into that connection.
