Another One Bites the Dust by Chris Marie Green

Another One Bites the Dust: Jensen Murphy, Ghost For Hire by Chris Marie GreenIntrepid ghost heroine, Jensen, returns in Another One Bites the Dust, book two in the highly original Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire series. Picking up a few weeks after the events of book one, Jensen and her ghost friends, along with still-alive psychic Amanda Lee, attempt to make the best of their situation: realizing that even though they uncovered a killer, a dark spirit of some sort was released through a portal in the process. As a result, not only do they have the dark spirit to contend with, but also the ire of Wendy, the young woman (able to see and speak with ghosts) upset with Jensen for having gone inside the head of her older brother, Gavin, numerous times to determine whether or not he was the murderer of Amanda Lee’s lover (he was not).

Despite Wendy’s antagonism towards Jensen, the ghosts take shifts at the girl’s house, keeping a look-out for the dark spirit, whom they believe may return to hurt her at any time. Due to a contact Wendy makes online, Amanda Lee receives a visit from a woman who believes her friend has gotten involved with a guy who may eventually hurt her, and she hopes that the ghosts can use their “investigative” methods to determine his true state of mind and intentions. Welcoming the diversion, and the chance to help out someone as a favor to Wendy, Jensen agrees to assist Amanda Lee with the case. In addition, the two women get a few leads on Jensen’s murder from thirty years earlier. Since boredom remains the most common state ghosts wish to avoid, Jensen and Amanda Lee get plenty of volunteers to help with both situations.

Jensen’s band of cohorts, especially the ghosts, prove entertaining and touching as they navigate Boo World and make an effort to do some good on the earthly plane. Though Jensen narrates the story, each of the players exhibits distinctive characteristics, enabling the reader to visualize them despite their “gray” state. Jensen, cut down at a low point of her human life, mourning the loss of her parents, gets a second chance as a ghost to make a difference to others, and though she makes a few missteps along the way, for the most part tries to do the right thing, learning that she cannot always follow her immediate inclinations.

Green deftly pulls off the unique premise of a ghost protagonist, adding in just the right balance of humor and suspense, resulting in a narrative both entertaining and exciting, touched with a dash of poignant moments. This reviewer very much looks forward to finding out what happens next for Jensen and Company.
