Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan. So many of us have fallen in love with the boy who never wants to grow up and his band of lost boys. We have been led to believe that Captain Hook is an evil, treacherous pirate who fights with children. Perhaps there is much truth in that, but we only know one side of the story.
James Hookbridge was a young man with a bright future. His father had ambitions for his only son and sent him off to school to become a gentleman. Unfortunately, James had a passion for sailing and carpentry that his father would not allow. While off at school James sowed his wild oats and indulged in his every desire in spite of his father’s rules. His arrogance and pride took him down a path that led to the demise of James Hookbridge and the birth of the Captain, Alias Hook.
I struggled at the start with the formality of the language, but that quickly evaporated and I got caught up in the story. Hook has always been one of those characters that I have just loved to hate, so it was quite a surprise when he won my heart and I found myself hoping that he could find his way out of The Neverland he was so hopelessly entangled in.
The magic of the original story stills shimmers throughout this tale with a huge twist. Everything I thought I knew about Peter becomes the myth. The fairies and mermaids that live in this Neverland are very different than the enchanting creatures I grew up with. Alias Hook is a beautiful story that illustrates how love transforms us and makes us willing to sacrifice for others. It is a story about growing up and the painful choices that sometimes need to be made in order to find our true place in the world.
Caution: This YA has some violence and sexual references. It is, however all done quite well without being too graphic or explicit.
