The life of Vlad Dracul is told by three prisoners hoping the Cardinal will spare their lives. Ion, a personal friend of Vlad, starts the story, followed by Ilona, Mehmet Vlad’s nemesis’s concubine. The book chronicles the life of Vlad starting with his time with Ion when they were in school with Ion’s favorite teacher, the Turk Hamza. We all know the story as vampire lovers, but it is told in such a way that it is enchanting. All the hatred and conflicts in his life lead to his cursed and atrocious personality.
Though the book was really long, it was very riveting. I couldn’t stop reading it. I’ve learned much over time about Vlad Dracul but never so much about his personal life in detail. It was so provocative that I’ve started recommending it to other people. I would give it a solid B+. It’s a must read if you’re either studying Vlad Dracul or just curious about his life. It’s the best examination of him that I’ve ever come across.
