Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh

Changelings are a sensual species who not only crave touch and intimacy, but also need it to survive. Yet Vaughn D’Angelo, sentinel of the DarkRiver leopard clan, is the second changeling male to fall head over tail for a beautiful Psy woman.

Faith NightStar is a member of the cold-as-ice race of the Psy whose talent lies in the ability to foresee the future. She has been trained to use her abilities for business purposes, but images of a sleek leopard who can bring her ultimate pleasure bombard her, threatening to break her Silence or drive her insane, whichever comes first.

Visions of Heat is the proof that this series is here to stay. Nalini’s sophomore effort didn’t bend under the pressure of living up to Slave to Sensation. Instead, it surpassed my expectations in every way.

The relationship between Vaughn and Faith faced the same obstacles as Lucas and Sascha’s, but the characters took their own route in overcoming them. Sascha had already begun to feel emotion when she met Lucas, she just refused to admit it. In contrast, Vaughn’s mission was to get Faith to break Silence while she was determined not to go insane as a consequence. Faith’s training instilled pain markers that were triggered anytime she felt, making the process much more difficult.

Even though Vaughn tends to push her too hard at times to break her conditioning and feel, his love for Faith is genuine and almost instant. It’s a trait I admire about Nalini’s male characters; they’re (normally) not afraid of their emotions, instead embracing them with a fervor that would make the most die hard romantic proud.

Romance isn’t the only thing Visions of Heat has to offer, earning it 5 tombstones. The alliance between the DarkRiver leopards and the SnowDancer wolves is tense but stable, Brenna’s ability to recover and the Lauren’s assistance are still mysteries to be uncovered, and the tension between the changelings and the Psy is escalated to a degree that smells like war.

  1. I love how we’re learning more about the Laurens little by little–I’m looking forward to the greater part I think that whole family has to play!

  2. Wow, I love reading these reviews! They are well written, triggering my desire to go get them and read them NOW. I like the fact that in this series, the men, like you said, embrace their feelings instead of ignoring them or condemning them. Makes it all the more intriguing.

  3. Even the male Psy that we encounter (there’s one in Hostage to Pleasure who only makes a brief appearance at a murder seen who made me want to cry, he was so quietly depressed) embrace their feelings with gusto.

I have to admit, Vaughn is one of the more sensual characters. The way he calls her “Red”…*sigh*…glorious.

  4. And thank you for the kudos on the reviews. : )

  5. I’m definitely going to have to try out this series now- who can resist men willing to embrace their emotions?

  6. I’m waiting to see more of the Laurens in future books. Nalini’s shifters are definitely all about emotions and family, Bella. She does a wonderful job with the romances, but always keeps you very interested with the ongoing plot.

  7. This sounds like a great book. Vaughn and Faith seem to be the type of hero and heroine I can admire. It is definitely a book I look forward to reading.

  8. I also really liked how Faith was able to improve her relationship with her father through breaking Silence.

  9. Reading Vaughn’s story was a surprise to me. If you read the first book in the series you wonder who will he mate with. Faith NightStar was a welcome surprise. I was not expecting him to mate with another psy who knew.

This book opens up the Psy word a little more and yes you end up with more questions but finding out the answers is a blast.

I can’t wait to get the next book. That one is a dozy on my future couple guesses. There’s a surprise at every turn i tell you!
