Chess enjoys the security of working for The Church of Real Truth, but she has a habit that sometimes causes her difficulty. In order to escape the reality of banishing ghosts, Chess tends to do drugs to keep her sanity. She has run into a little bit of problem with her dealer, Bump, in that he wants to be paid, and she does not have the money. So, he asks her to perform a little job — just investigating a long-closed airport for ghost activity. Sounds easy, right? Well, Chess has all kinds of problems with the job. A rival drug dealer threatens her, she has to work with Bump’s enforcer and his interference in her daily life, and of course, there is always more to the story than meets the eye — a secret organization, demons, ghosts, etc. Will Chess be able to complete the job without losing her life?
All I can say is — wow! If you are expecting writing similar to Ms. Kane’s other series, you shouldn’t be. Unholy Ghosts is in a completely different voice. I have to say, after finally getting to meet Stacia Kane, this book is more the type I can see her writing. The story grabs you and keeps you hooked from the very first page.
I am intrigued by Chess and look forward to learning more about her as the series progresses. She has quite a background and somehow manages to do her job despite her addictions, which she manages to keep from the Church. The introduction of “the Church of Real Truth” is also a fascinating concept, that this “church” manages somehow to supersede the “old established religions” after the ghosts rise up against mankind. I think Unholy Ghosts is a unique concept in the urban fantasy genre and I cannot say enough about it. I know I am already anxious to get started on the next book in the series, Unholy Magic. All I can say is add this book to your summer reading list today!
Book Excerpt:“THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.
The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.”
