Twofold Desires by Ashleigh Raine

This story was previously published in Things That Go Bump in the Night IV. Although it has the same setting as Ms. Raine’s Talisman Bay series, this one works as a stand-alone.

Jill Evans, the owner of a flower shop called Jill’s Bloomers, leads a boring life. Looking to spice it up, she attends a Halloween costume dance at a nearby club. Dressed as a fairy in silver and white, she stands out among the nearly bare women in red and black. A gorgeous blond guy surrounded by women catches her eye. When her insecurities make her pass him by, Jill trips on the stairs and nearly falls at Arden Griffin’s feet. After some cute bantering, they leave together for some quiet conversation at a nearby diner. Jill has no clue just how spicy her life is about to become.

Ms. Raine creates a believably sweet gal in Jill and plays Arden and Leo, the blond guy, against each other in a way that makes them both likeable. While sex is inevitably part of the story (you have seen the cover, right?), Ms. Raine takes time to build her characters and have them get comfortable with each other before the hot sex starts. Plus, some of the dialogue and descriptive phrases add light humor. Ms. Raine includes a neat twist that keeps this from being a routine shapeshifter/human erotic romance.
