The Witch’s Dream by Victoria Danann

The Witch's Dream (The Order of the Black Swan, Book 2) by Victoria Danann*This review does contain spoilers pertaining to Book 1 of the Order of the Black Swan, My Familiar Stranger. I highly recommend that you read the first book.

In this second outing of the Order of the Black Swan series we pick up shortly after the events of My Familiar Stranger. Elora and Ram are marrying at his ancestral home in Ireland, celebrating with the other members of the brotherhood, Kay and Storm and former vampire, Baka. Right after the wedding the B Team heads to Edinburgh along with Baka to deal with a werewolf nuisance. While there, tragedy strikes as Kay’s fiance is kidnapped and it will take the help of Order witch Litha Brandywine to get him back.

Litha is unlike any woman Storm has ever met–direct, confident, and completely beguiling. While he cannot keep her out of his thoughts, he refuses to acknowledge that another woman may be able to fill the hole Elora and Ram’s marriage left in his heart. Litha is thrown off-balance by her instant attraction to Storm, and even more confused by the fact that while he is obviously attracted to her, he seems to be going out of his way to hurt her. They find themselves paired with the mission of finding Trina while the others deal with the werewolf issue. Working together to save Trina brings the two closer, but the cost to save her may be more than either is prepared to pay.

In The Witch’s Dream, not only does Danann deliver on the promise of the first installment but really knocks it out of the park. First and foremost, the world-building is top-notch. The blend of science and magic, alternate dimensions, and all the paranormal folk would be a jumbled confused mess in the hands of a less-skilled storyteller. Danann takes all of these elements along with her wonderful characters and weaves a brilliant tapestry. There is something incredibly lyrical and hypnotic about her writing style that really grips a reader and makes it very hard to put this book down.

I freely admit that I was predisposed to like this entry for one reason: Storm. Oh, how my heart positively broke for him in the previous novel, so much so that I actively began to dislike Elora and Ram-just for being happy. Storm is everything an alpha should be: strong, smart, skilled and a knight. To see him so off-kilter here, trying to pick up the pieces of a broken heart and remain the badass operative he is supposed to be is gut wrenching–until Litha enters the picture. She is such a kick-ass heroine. Capable, smart, talented and incredibly honest and so so perfect for Storm. She is unflappable and steady in a way that the very best people are. Seeing their romance develop was hard at times, but so worth it.

The Witch’s Dream has everything a reader could want. A swift moving plot full of engaging characters and an amazing alternate reality are so totally engrossing and satisfying that you will be reaching for the next installment the second you are finished with the last page.

About KristinD

Kristin is loving wife and doggie mom with a serious book addiction. When she is not in the kitchen whipping up a tasty confection (or cocktail) she can usually be found on the couch with her nose in a book. And she really did not hear what her husband just said to her, never mind that she responded… he should know better, she was reading. Her favorite books to read feature vampires, fae, & Gods of any pantheon (oh my!) but she has been known to pick up some pretty heavy philosophical tomes, funny memoirs, and scientific gobblygook. She also has a soft spot in her heart for good high fantasy. She fell in love with Anne Rice at far to young of an age and still has not found her way to NOLA! Kristin also spends time as a foster mom for a herding breed dog rescue in Illinois, indulging her husbands’ “silly” hobby of import/vintage video gaming, and spending as much time as she can with various members of her ridiculously large family. Somehow she manages to work full time in insurance sales but would much rather be having a kitchen dance party.
