At this border, a young sprite named Pollo sees Sara and knows immediately she is a witch untrained and unaware of her healing powers. Meanwhile, Sara finds two friends, Nate and Chloe, and is amazed at how quickly they accept her. Good thing, too, because a storm is brewing in the land of the fae which will destroy humans and magical creatures alike if Pollo and his ilk cannot convince Sara to embrace her magical nature and fight the coming destruction. Sara will need all the friends she can get to face the dangerous journey ahead.
After intense training in magic and fighting, and with an obvious tip of the hat to Tolkien, Sara and an assortment of magic creatures set off on a journey to a far off kingdom. On the way, they face dragons, trolls, and giant spiders, just to name a few, and despite Sara’s growing powers as a healer, not everyone is going to make it to the Kingdom of the Elves alive.
War of the Odds gets three and a half tombstones for putting a young adult coming of age spin on the classic magical quest theme. Sara and her friends (human and otherwise) all grow up along the trip, experiencing first loves and losses, finding wells of strength inside themselves, and learning how important it is to keep hope close to your heart. I particularly like the budding romance side story, getting inside the head of both parties as they try to act like warriors instead of lovesick puppies. And the Afterword? Hey, I cannot sleep without a happily ever after.
