Scorched by Erica Hayes

Scorched (HarperImpulse Urban Fantasy) by Erica HayesVerity comes from a family with plenty of “augmentation” (super powers). Not everyone has augmentation, so while her family has always used their powers for good they wear masks so their identities are kept secret. Breaking out of the asylum where she has been kept for what she thought was weeks, Verity makes it to the safety of her brother’s house.

After a much needed-rest and shower things start to steadily go downhill again from there. Rejected by her sister she makes a run for it only to run into the very people she has just escaped from.Glimmer rescues Verity from being recaptured and takes her back to his hideaway. With plenty of personal reasons of his own to hate Razorfire (the evil local villain) Glimmer and Verity form a partnership.

As the story unfolds Verity has flashbacks to the night she was imprisoned and her father died. Struggling to remember she is both repulsed and drawn to the memories. Flailing around trying to find herself she is often consumed with rage and does not understand where this is all coming from. Working with Glimmer helps her reaffirm the her mantra, “I am not a bad person.”

Scorched is a really promising start to a new series by Erica Hayes. Having enjoyed other books by the author I was looking forward to reading this. Once again Erica weaves a powerful story with plenty of villainous mayhem. The world-building is well-crafted in a world where the augmented are shunned and feared by most.

About Emma D.

Emma – From early childhood my parents encouraged me to read and I spent most of my time either with my nose in a book or on my horse. While my parents can take the glory for my love of reading they have no idea where I got my love of animals (horses and dogs in particular) from. I got my first dog when I was 8 but had to hand him back as my younger siblings where scared of him (he was a bouncy puppy). So I got a horse and my parents promise I could get a dog when I was fourteen (they thought I would forget). Well I turned 14 and asked for my dog J I’ve had one ever since. Now days as an adult my time is split between work, reading, my dog (just in the last year and a half I’ve taken up dog agility) and still occasionally some horses. When reading I read across a wide variety of genres from sci fi and fantasy to murder/mystery. I’m not particularly fond of historical but otherwise I’ll give anything a try.
