Raven’s Quest by Anya Bast

Branna is the high priestess of Tir na Ban, her title is the Raven and she is the most powerful of her remaining sisters. It is for her to take her magic and make war against Magnus, the usurper of Numia, and restore the magical balance. However, Magnus’ nephew Lucan thinks differently and he will do what he must no matter who stands in his way. Magnus killed Lucan’s entire family and he seeks vengeance as much as justice. But both must compromise and make deadly sacrifices or their entire world is doomed to fall to Magnus’ stifling tyranny.

Published many, many, moons ago and recently re-released, this is more quixotic fantasy than the romantic paranormal we have come to know and love from this author. You can definitely tell this is an earlier work; however it still brilliantly complex, just not what Anya Bast’s readers have come to expect. Nevertheless, if medieval-style fantasies appeal to you, this is definitely your cup of tea. It is packed full of derring-do and heroic acts, magic in plenty, a dash or two of unrequited love, sacrifices both big and small, and a hearty ration of romance. Stir it all up and you get a fantastical tale.
