Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper

Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors (Jane Jameson, Book 4) by Molly Harper Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors, the terrific fourth book in the highly entertaining Nice Girls series, begins with Jane’s boyfriend, Gabriel, popping he question yet again. This time, however, she says yes. Shortly thereafter, the teenaged neighbor Jane babysat when he was a child gets hit by a car right in front of her house. The mortally injured Jamie begs Jane to turn him into a vampire, saying he does not want to die. With instructions from her friend, Dick, Jane goes through the process, also preparing for the three-day wait until Jamie rises.

In a bit of shock already over the events, Jane gets a visit from the vampire council, and learns that Jamie will be living with her until he has learned control (basically, how not to eat people and/or run rampant wreaking havoc). While adjusting to her new role of sire, Jane must also contend with a poltergeist, experience the serious injury of a loved one, figure out who is after either her or Gabriel, and plan a wedding.

This visit to Half-Moon Hollow provides pure joy and loads of unadulterated fun. Harper’s masterful use of pitch-perfect humor and velvet-smooth narrative flow result in a tale that hits all of the right notes. Despite its light tone, Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors depicts relationships realistically and genuine emotion poignantly. All of the characters, primary and secondary, contribute to the story and the overall enjoyment of this excellent novel. After having come to grips with the fact that she will never be able to have children, Jane demonstrates how unexpected parenthood proves a challenge that she can master.

Fans of the series will be sorry to see it end (at least for now), but should be pleased they can revisit Half-Moon Hollow in the spin-off A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses. The author does a lovely job of tying up loose ends and giving Jane and Gabriel a proper send-off. This reviewer hopes for more about Jane, a completely engaging heroine.
